Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager
Into February already! Wow! Hasn’t the year got off to a flyer! We’re into February already! Once again, we will bring you lots of exciting promotions and events on Murray Hill behalf of all our business owners over the course of the year. Flicks + Fun which is only days away, will be our first event and if you haven’t already heard about it, Zoë our Events & Marketing assistant, has written about it later in the column. Cleanliness of Town Centre: In recent months I have had a few comments about the tidiness of the Browns Bay Town Centre, which at the time, I think was justified, However, much of this is outside the control of the business association and I know that a lot of the berms on the streets were looking somewhat overgrown. When I followed up with council over the matter, they said it was because the storms and rain had meant the contractors were behind. Well here’s what we did about it. In these photos you will see Erica Stanford (our chairperson), assisting me cutting the berm outside one of the empty lots in Anzac Road.

In total, between us, there were seven specific areas that were tidied up in the town centre in the weeks before Christmas. As a result of our action, other business people also got involved. It is by no means 100% perfect, but we have some plans afoot to achieve a beautiful appearance for the town centre – but it’s just like a good wine – it takes time! Whilst on the subject of rubbish, one of the most annoying areas we dealt with was

the perimeter of the carpark behind the shops in the Clyde Mall. There had been an ever-increasing pile of household rubbish dumped here. I ended up employing a contractor who sent two men and a truck – the latter of which was full by the time it was loaded with all the rubbish. None of which I have to say was from any of our businesses. If you see anyone dumping rubbish in our town centre, get their registration and contact me – I would

For those interested, the before and after pictures of all the areas of the town centre tidied up are on our website at www.brownsbay.org.nz Flicks + Fun: Early last year we saw an opportunity to create and grow an event that had the potential to expand into something the whole North Shore and East Coast Bays could call their own. Events are an essential part of developing our sense of community connection and pride. They also generate economic growth, are a fantastic way to show off the natural beauty of the stunning locations like ours, they add to our areas identity and are very importantly a whole bunch of fun! We want Flicks + Fun to become all this

and more for the Bays and the North Shore. The city has the Lantern festival, the Nines, Pacifica, and all the rest. We think it’s about time the North Shore claimed its own stake in the event calendar and developed an event that can truly showcase our beautiful beachside location. One that can be grown in future years whilst connecting community members, creating new experiences and showcasing our destination. Year One will begin relatively humbly with an exciting mix of activities including 5 sweet flicks (Finding Dory; E.T.; The B.F.G.; Zootopia; Hunt for the Wilderpeople) over the weekend. There will be food trucks galore, an artisan craft market, beach dig, music from Fifth Element and the Hipstamatics, loads more music, kids activities and games. Lots of friendly faces and anything else we can get our hands on! And yes, we can fit that all in to one awesome weekend.
Although we have faced some struggles (inevitable in the first year) we are proud to present the first year of Flicks + Fun – we hope that the event will continue to grow into something exceptional. For all the details head to brownsbay.org.nz or join the event on Facebook @Flicks+Fun! Regards

The festival of fun kicks off with the Browns Bay Night Market featuring loads of locally made goods and produce. The Night Market stalls will be filling the Plaza in front of Kiwibank with entertainment and sweet vibes provided by musicians playing on the Browns Bay Band Stand. This will be a great night for the entire family on the beachfront with food vendors offering a range of delicious goods. The first ‘Flick’ of the weekend kicks off at 6pm – the favourite blue tang fish movie ‘Finding Dory’. Flick number two for Friday night will start from 8pm – the cult classic ‘E.T.’. Friday will be a great night for families who can choose to have dinner, take in the early movie and get the kids home or stay for the duration of both movies. The fun starts from 10am on Sunny Saturday in the Skate Bowl with skate lessons for the little one’s from the OnBoard Skate School. All the gear will be provided and this will be a great opportunity for the kids to learn to skate with the experts. they’ve organised a bunch of food trucks to line the Beachfront to feed all the family and friends between 1pm and 9pm on Saturday. The third ‘Flick’ of the festival is the magical tale of ‘The BFG’ which starts at 6pm on Saturday and look out for the special lights that will add more magic to the atmosphere later in the evening. The entertainment continues on Saturday evening from 8.30pm when groups ‘Fifth Element’ and the ‘Hipstamatics’ will perform some sweet tunes on the main stage with dance moves encouraged! Saturday wraps up around 10.30pm. Day three, Sunday 26th, is being billed as SWEET SUNDAY! Prepare for a full day of sweet summer tunes as you relax in the sun. A range of local musos will be performing on the main stage and the food trucks will be on the beachfront once again from 1pm Sunday. Murrays Bay Birdman Festival It’s on – Saturday April 1, 10.30am until 2.30pm – Murrays Bay Wharf
We love it when the community gets together to organise great family events. One we are looking forward to is the Murrays Bay Wharf Birdman Festival to officially celebrate the opening of the new wharf on Saturday April 1st. In fact our team at Benefitz (publishers and parent company of Channel Magazine) have contributed by designing the logo for the event, producing the website and all the printed items that are needed. We are also very likely to have an entry in the event and are keen to take away the Murrays Bay Birdman Champion Trophy! Murrays Bay is well-known by North Shore people for the attraction of its wharf which has always been popular amongst young and old for the ritual of fishing from it, jumping off it, mooring at it, or just taking a leisurely stroll along it. During the ‘Birdman Festival’ Murrays Bay will celebrate the opening of bigger, better and grander brand new wharf – wharf number three – over 100 years after the first wharf in Murrays Bay was erected back in 1916. The Birdman Festival is being organised by Murrays Bay Residents Association together with the Murrays Bay Sailing Club and Mairangi Bay Surf Life Saving Club. This exciting spectacle is going to be a fun-filled day of entertainment for everyone, with dress-up activities and a street parade for the young ones where they can show off their precious designs, followed by a display for the not so young ones (15 and over) of their daring and amazing flying – or maybe not so flying! – objects before these become unrecognisable when they finally make their attempt at becoming the Murrays Bay Birdman Champion by flying or jumping of the wharf. “This is not the first event of this type at the wharf,” says organiser Josie Adriaansen of the Murrays Bay Residents Association. “Many years ago Murrays Bay wharf hosted such an event with great success so let’s see if we can do this again. So we are urging locals to put a team together, start building their flying machines and maybe produce some music to go with it.” Organisers tell us that to win the Murrays Bay Birdman Champion Trophy they want to see your wildest wackiest innovative creation. But entries are limited as this is quite an entertaining show that requires most entries being much more than just jumping off the

2017
wharf. Most will have quite a ‘ritual’ to their attempt at birdman greatness! There are several categories that entrants can compete in and win prizes and maybe the ultimate trophy. Judges will be looking for:• The Ultimate Flying Challenge - the longest distance able to fly and must be a flying contraption with wings. • Fibres and Feathers - this must be constructed with natural materials and fibres. String and manmade fibres can hold it together. • The Crowd Favourite - can be any material but it is handmade. • Most Creative Craft - can be any material but it is handmade. • Best team – Team is to consist of no more than 5 participants with only 3 allowed to jump. Top tips for an awesome birdman jump: Perform a routine; have music; don’t lie down on the wharf – we can’t see you! So time to get started! There will be lots of prizes to be won during this fun-filled day where live music, food stalls, sausage sizzles drinks etc. are all going to be part of the action. There are opportunities for those wishing to have stalls at the festival event. Stalls will be located along the Murrays Bay Sailing Club and Serengeti Car Park. Stall sites are just $50 per site for the day. How to enter the Murrays Bay Birdman Competition: • Entry forms to be completed & returned with payment by 1st March 2017. • You can enter online via the website www.mbwbirdman.nz • Entry fee is $30 • Entries limited so be quick – it will sell out! Murrays Bay Birdman Festival. It’s going to be a big day, this is the programme of events: 11am Entertainment; 12noon Children’s Parade; 12.15pm Powhiri; 12.30pm Birdman Parade; 12.45pm Birdman Jump; 2pm Birdman Prizegiving; Event closes at 2.30pm. Further details, application forms etc. are available on the wonderful event website that has been created by Benefitz at: www.mbwbirdman.co.nz

Peace & Performance: with Graeme Saxby
Shouldering responsibility for health One of the more common presentations to Graeme Saxby osteopaths are shoulder pain issues. One report indicates 15% of men and 25% of women reported shoulder pain from a study of 29,000 people, most significantly in the 50-55 years bracket.(1) Shoulders are a delicate balance of forces where the tone of muscles makes a significant difference to the positioning of the head of the humerus in the socket (glenoid fossa) of the shoulder blade. Too much pull from one muscle will pull the head into a different part of the socket as the ligamentous support to the area is relatively small. The mechanical disadvantage compounds itself when positions reach the end of range, particularly the highest point of reaching above the head, full range of lifting out to the side, and bringing the hand behind the back to reach up the spine. Various findings are associated with shoulder pain: commonly irritations to tendons around the rotator cuff muscles, impingements to the space in the top of the shoulder from inflamed regions, and deposition of calcium in tendons creating irritation. These findings are commonly treated with microsurgery and anti-inflammatory injection. These often afford relief and can be enough to prevent recurrence, but all too often the imbalance that started the whole sorry saga is still in place. Inappropriate rounding of the back forcing elevated and forward positioned shoulder blades is a common predisposition. This immediately compromises the ability of the muscles to hold the centre spot for the humerus in its shallow socket. Try this test, take your right hand behind your back and reach as high up your spine as you can. Then look at the amount of lift that has been achieved by the shoulder blade in peeling away from the back. In some cases the scapula will lift clear without resistance. In some, the top of the shoulder blade stays firmly stuck to the back, whilst the bottom pulls away. In others, there is very little change in blade position at all. If you then compare to your left side (or nondominant arm) the comparison with workload through the area can be appreciated. Often the non-dominant arm is considerably freer than the dominant. All of this can indicate regions of muscle that are impacting on the mobility of the shoulder blade that will then lead to compromise at the shoulder joint. Potentially this leads to tissue failure and the commonly diagnosed problems mentioned earlier Knowing how to control the shoulder blades on the back, utilising attachments from as far away as the low back and the neck, can significantly change the recovery rate of shoulder dysfunctions, and perhaps more importantly stop them from starting or returning. The responsibility for the change is with the owner of the shoulders. The change of habits ingrained over many years is a problem that can be difficult to overcome, but with the aid of a balanced combination of strengthening and reconditioning alongside stretching and soft tissue mobilisation the best results can be obtained. If you have a shoulder issue that you think you should be doing something about please call Graeme at the Peace and Performance osteopathic clinic for a no obligation conversation.

Summer tips for your Pets
From your Emergency After Hours Veterinary Centre It is finally summer and many locals like to get out and enjoy the beach for a walk with their four-legged friends. If you have a pet, you need to know where to go in an emergency and know what to do. Browns Bay Mag talked to Tanja Nilsen, practice manager of our North Shore Emergency After Hours Veterinary Centre based in Ellice Road, Glenfield to find out how to keep them safe and sound in these hot months.
Tanja Nilsen
BROWNS BAY MAG: Our animals are feeling the heat this summer how do we keep our dogs cool? TANJA NILSEN: Exercise your animals in the cooler parts of the day, especially dark coated dogs or those with dense fur. If you have a paddling pool at home leave that out and full for your dog to lie in. You should avoid playing fetch and highly active activities during the heat of the day. BBM: How do dogs cool down? TN: Dogs cool down through their pads or through panting. Make sure you leave out a couple of bowls of water for your pets during the day. If you are out on a walk you can take water and plastic bowl with you or a dog bottle. BBM: How do you know if something is wrong with your dog or if it is getting heat exhaustion? TN: Dogs will pant a lot more and their breathings will become fast and shallow, the colour of the gums go to dark pink to purple tinge. BBM: What do you do if your dog collapses? TN: Bring your dog to us as quickly as you can. Heat Stroke is a life-threatening condition for your pet. It can lead to multiple organ shutdown, swelling of the brain, seizures and ultimately death. Making sure you are cooling the dog on the way by air conditioning or open car windows. BBM: Are there any common hazards around the home that we should know about? TN: Yes, in particular Glass windows. Simply keep them open or place a sticker on the glass at your dog’s eye level so that they do not run through it. BBM: Where do we take our animals in an emergency after hours? TN: It is very important to know this number and add it to your phone 09 443 5640. North Shore After Hours & Veterinary Emergency Centre is located at 2/96 Ellice Road Glenfield. We are open Monday to Friday 6pm to 8am and Open Weekends Sat 12pm to Monday 8am. www.brownsbay.org.nz

Optometry with Nicholls and Associates
The story of the photo on the side of our building It’s a question we hear often....What’s the story with the old photo on the side of your building? Well there is a story. It’s not just a random image. The photo is of Mr Viv Nicholls and the first patient he examined in his 46 year career as an optometrist in Auckland. Viv was trained during WWII, performing visual examinations on army recruits and US soldiers at the barracks then located in Cornwall Park. His first job, and where the photo was taken, was for George Read and Sons Opticians in Karangahape Road, Auckland. Viv went on to become a partner in the old practice, and continued to work in Karangahape Road until his retirement in 1991. The relevance to us? Viv was the father of Bruce Nicholls, our principle optometrist here at Nicholls and Associates in Browns Bay. We wonder what Viv would think of how we practice optometry today. He died in 2003, just as the new digital diagnostic technology surfaced. While the issues affecting vision remain the same, the methods for diagnosing sight threatening diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration are nothing like the old days. Our new OCT digital imaging scanner not only photographs inside the eye, it provides a 3D model of the retina including the structures deep within. A bit like an ultrasound allows you to see into deep structures, our OCT allows us to see into the retina. We can save this data to give us a baseline for the future, thus helping us to detect subtle changes indicating disease much sooner than in the past. If you have concerns about your eyesight or there is a family history of eyesight problems, we recommend you book in to have a full visual examination and OCT imaging with one of our optometrists. Early detection of issues is the key to saving eyesight. Phone 479 2316 to book your next eye exam with one of our optometrists or call in to 72 Clyde Road, Corner Clyde and Bute Roads, Browns Bay.
Viv was trained during WWII, performing visual examinations on army recruits and US soldiers at the barracks then located in Cornwall Park. Nicholls & Associates Optometrists 72 Clyde Road, Browns Bay. Phone 479 2316 Email: info@nichollsoptical.co.nz or Visit: www.nichollsoptical.co.nz

Glamorgan Kindergarten News
Glamorgan Kindergarten in Torbay turns 40! So many children, families and teachers have been associated with Glamorgan Kindergarten over the years. Our 40th birthday brought with it the opportunity to acknowledge all of those, past and present, who have contributed to our kindergarten and enriched our community and environment. The focus of the celebration was to bring the community together and a display was created at the kindergarten to share the history of the kindergarten. We were overwhelmed and very grateful for all the contributions, information and photos received. We also wished to commemorate the event with something special… a long lasting symbol that would be a meaningful representation of all who have spent time here at Glamorgan Kindergarten. We commissioned Mitchell Hughes, an artist/carver from Waitomo Caves from the King Country who specialises in Māori carving and tattooing. Mitch worked in collaboration with the teachers to design a Pāre (a door lintel carving) which welcomes everyone that arrives through our doors and communicates the true essence of our learning community at Glamorgan Kindergarten. What is the meaning behind our carving? The pāre/carving symbolises the face of a Koruru (Owl) a figure of wisdom and knowledge. It represents also the kaiako and kaitiaki o te kura - teachers, caregivers and guardians in the kindergarten who embrace and support all akonga (learners), parents, whānau and visitors. The puhoro kowhaiwhai design that flows from the mouth symbolises ‘Korero matauranga ngā taonga tuku iho’ - knowledge passed down through the generations. Matakupenga is the fish net that reaffirms the gathering of matauranga (knowledge), a sign of wealth that is key to success and prosperity.
The Life Coach: Momentum Life Coaching & Training
Are You Listening? Kat McKay Let’s face it, relationships can be tricky. One of the keys to any successful relationship is the art of effective and healthy communication. But sometimes it’s easy to forget that communication is not just about the talking. It is just as much about the listening! As a relationship coach, I often hear the frustrated phrase, “he/ she just doesn’t listen!” It’s very easy to fall into the habit of listening to someone’s words and perhaps notice their body language but, at the same time, be busy thinking about how we are going to respond or how their words affect us. What if we simply listened? Listened to their words, but also the underlying message or emotions behind the words? Listened to what they’re NOT saying? What if we could do that without assuming what they mean? If you and your partner often argue or get upset with each other, consider what it is you’re not hearing from each other. Consider where the anger and frustration are really coming from. We know that anger is a secondary emotion and is generally the outward expression of some other underlying emotion. It could be fear, grief, embarrassment or overwhelm. It could be frustration over unmet needs or feeling unimportant. Taking anger at face value will rarely get to the bottom of the real issue. It can be easy to bite back or simply shrink away from it and neither of these are healthy responses. What would it mean to your relationship if you could each listen to the other from a place of real curiosity? Where you don’t assume, you clarify. Where indifference is not taken at face value but you listen for the underlying reason. Where you don’t suffer under unkind words but you ask the question of what is really behind those words. It could make a powerful difference and is worth getting help if unhealthy communication is an issue for you.
Kat McKay, Relationship Coach.
On the day the kindergarten children undertook a performance of their own - singing their favourite songs in Te Reo Maori and Chinese for everyone to enjoy. Even though the children had practiced for weeks it was quite a daunting prospect for some as they did not expect there to be such a big audience! The children’s performance was followed by the Glamorgan School Kapa Haka group, many of whom attended our kindy and who did an amazingly passionate performance. Then the moment we had been waiting for finally arrived - the unveiling and blessing of our beautiful carving. On behalf of the teaching team of Glamorgan Kindergarten... we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate with us! IN THE GARDEN!
Hopefully the weather has sorted itself out and you can spend February harvesting and enjoying your summer fruits and veges. Now is the time to take your produce into the kitchen and create wonderful fresh meals, salads, desserts and cocktails for your family to enjoy! Nothing beats a fresh picked posy of flowers around the house, and lazing outside in the garden with the scents and sights of your efforts, it really is so rewarding!
Now’s the time to encourage children in their love of gardening. There’s nothing better than seeing the results of their efforts - lettuces and salad greens are so easy to grow!
It’s great to spend time outside with children in summer and at Palmers Planet we love having kids in store. There is a playground for them to enjoy, as well as a delicious kid’s menu in our café. We also have ice creams and ice blocks available, the perfect way to cool down while mum and dad shop. Why not pop in for lunch and choose some plants to take home and plant with the kids? Kids love to help in the garden and take great pride when their flowers, vegetables or fruit trees start to flourish. When it comes to edibles, keep harvesting summer crops such as tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, courgettes, eggplant, new potatoes and spring onions, and pick every day to encourage continuous fruiting – especially peas, beans, eggplant, cucumbers and courgettes. Keep planting new lettuce and herbs regularly too, to ensure a consistent supply. For fruit lovers, pip and stone fruit will be ready
to harvest from orchard trees now. Protect your crops from pests and disease with netting or choose one of Palmers BioGro certified organic insect and disease control options. To learn more go to our website or pick up a copy of Palmers Fruit Tree Guide in store. Weed and mulch as much as you can, and keep up liquid feeding and regular slug bait drops to keep your patch in top shape all month long. In the flower garden, keep up the good work dead heading to encourage new blooms on all flowering plants. Summer flowering bulbs like gladioli will be blooming now, so keep checking their flower heads for insects or disease and spray with Yates Mite Spray if required. Now is the time to sit back, relax and enjoy your outdoor area, so if it’s looking a little empty, we can help. We have a huge range of new season’s outdoor furniture, cantilever umbrellas and spa pools in store. Need a new BBQ? Come in and check out our huge range of Masport and Ziegler & Brown BBQ’s – there are styles for every backyard!

Wait For It?
The 7 year cycle didn’t happen and we seem to have reached a crossroad in the real estate market. The investor lending rule imposed last year has created a dam in the flow of the property market. Everything surrounding it is growing with the potential energy ready to release! Current buyers are balancing the pressure and have no urgency, as competition has subsided for now. However, the influx of new migrants is going to be the rate limiting factor and it is the right time of year for that to influence the price. Increasing visitor numbers from certain countries have been published recently and these are likely to be our buyers competing with locals this year. We should prepare for this! We have the elections later this year and that will delay the spring selling season, as happened the last time. This will mean a shorter window to buy and sell in the same market. What does this all imply? The time to sell is before winter i.e. take advantage of the February –March busy period to achieve your goals this year. Call Me Now for an effective timeline to get you SOLD!

5 tips to improve the value of your home Renovations, whether big (adding a new room) or small (new light fittings) can be a great way to increase the value of your home. Often, significant value can be added to a property through relatively minor changes. However, carefully choosing what kind of renovations to undertake is crucial. Carrying out unnecessary work can sometimes incur huge expense while adding little to the sale value of your home. Here are five ways to add value to your home. 1. Insulate: The value this adds to your home cannot be overstated. Today, this is considered an absolute necessity by many homebuyers. In fact, not having insulation can easily create the perception of an unhealthy home. With the EECA Energywise programme subsidising the cost of insulation, there really is no reason not to insulate your property. Click here for more information on the subsidy. 2. Add a deck: Adding a deck is one of the most simple ways of boosting the value of your property. As well as creating indooroutdoor flow, a deck increases the available space for entertaining – something potential buyers want to be able to visualize when inspecting properties. 3. Refit the kitchen: Potential buyers know the kitchen is the

heart of the home. A tidy, modern kitchen can seriously improve the value of a home. When it comes to updating your kitchen there are two options: replace or recover. Your key targets are benches, cabinets, drawer fronts, skirting and handles. Replacing the fronts of your cabinets and drawers or installing a new bench top are good ways to update the look of your kitchen. A glass splashback adds a sleek feel to a kitchen, without a huge price tag. 4. Update the bathroom: As with the kitchen, the aim here is a modern appearance. A bathroom that looks old will instantly date the entire property in the minds of prospective buyers. Updating your bathroom needn’t be expensive or difficult. Aim to replace stained grout, outdated faucets, cabinet fronts or lighting. For those with the know how, a DIY refit of the bathroom can be very cost effective. 5. Create curb appeal: The greatest house in the world is going to be hard to sell if you can’t get people in the door. Creating curb appeal or a desirable entryway ensures you attract the right kind of attention. Firstly, ensure any garden or lawn area is tidy and well maintained. Introducing plants to the front of a home can really liven things up, at little cost. Repainting the entrance door or doorframe can blow the cobwebs off the front of a house and make your property stand out.

Browns Bay Primary School: News
Little Girl’s Dream Inspires New Children’s Book Browns Bay Primary children help with the official launch A new era of children’s storytelling began late last year with the launch of Angel Star – a children’s book and song inspired by one little girl’s dream. The book was officially launched last year, when 600 Browns Bay Primary School children, led by the school choir and book author Chris Sanders, sang Angel Star in a school performance at the school. An animated video based on the illustrations from the book was also released. Angel Star is a children’s storybook and song inspired by the 3-year old daughter of singer-songwriter and author Chris Sanders. Chris collaborated with best-selling illustrator and recent winner of the Children’s Choice at the New Zealand Book Awards Kat Merewether. Kiwi music icon and Silver Scroll winner Rikki Morris produced the song. The story follows a young girl who one night picks the brightest star in the sky to become her new sibling. She then sets about helping the star on its adventurous journey down mountains and through valleys, back to her loving family and home. Initially recorded as a song, the story was inspired by Chris’ search for a creative way of sharing with his daughter news that she was about to become a big sister. “My eldest daughter – who is now five – was desperate for a brother or sister,” says Chris. “When we found out my wife was pregnant we wanted to make our little girl feel included in the journey. “So that night we asked her to pick the brightest star in the sky to be her sibling and the following day we told her the news. She was so incredibly excited at the prospect of being a big sister! “It can be especially tough on other children in the family who may
feel like another child will result in them receiving less attention or even being less loved by their parents,” says Chris. “Angel Star helps them understand all the positive benefits of Browns Bay Primary School children becoming a sibling.” singing Angel Star during the official launch late last year at the school. A proud supporter of New Zealand children’s charity Child Matters, Chris is donated proceeds from the pre-launch of Angel Star to help protect all the little ‘Angel Stars’ in the community and will continue to work to help raise awareness of the Child Matters’ cause. Child Matters is a national charitable trust dedicated to the prevention of child abuse. Since 1994, they have been advocating for the rights of children and educating Kiwis about child protection issues. Child Matters General Manager Jane Searle says that Angel Star is a beautiful concept and that Child Matters is delighted to be joining with Chris on this project. Featuring adult contemporary music intertwined with simple, beautiful lyrics, Angel Star is a modern-day nursery rhyme that all the family can enjoy singing and reading – today and for generations to come. Nowadays adolescent children are encouraged to make informed decisions, however, as a contracted dental provider we are concerned that children, their parents and school staff are not always well informed about the choices available regarding the free oral health services provided by the ministry of health. Too often we have young adults attend our surgery with much neglected oral care and with “very expensive” problems which could have been avoided had they visited before their eligibility lapsed. We need to get the message out to parents that they can choose to take their child to the dentist they trust with their own treatment, and that the mobile services are there when this is not convenient. Children unfortunately cannot see both the mobile dental school bus and a private contracted dentist. The benefit of registering with a practice, is that if an emergency arises (either toothache or accidents), they will be seen by a dentist familiar to them at a location and time convenient to them. It also has the benefit of continuing treatment at the same surgery (who holds all the previous records) once they leave school. We all want to give our children the best start in life. We want them to grow, develop and thrive. Healthy teeth play an important role in a child’s development, helping them to eat and speak properly. Nice teeth are important for self-confidence later in life. If your child is in school year 9 or above and under the age of 18, you can choose your dentist for government funded treatment. Simply call a contracted dentist, book an appointment and they will provide the necessary documentation for them to enrol. ACC - Accidents children all ages: Children of all ages should contact the family dentist in case of an accident and all treatment will be covered by ACC. Keep checking: Don’t wait for teeth problems; take your child for regular check-ups. Preschool, primary school and intermediate school children are seen at the local community dental clinic and will be referred to a contracted dentist for specialised dental care should the need be. Call Greville Dental on 09-4787830 to enrol and to book an appointment. 18 Hauraki Crescent, Pinehill

Bays Fitness: The Jungle Gym
What is Your Most Important Asset in Life? When posed this question most will say family, house, career… however, your most important asset is your health. In your mid-teens to adulthood, men and women will join a gym because they want a certain aesthetic look i.e. abs, big guns and chest, bigger butts, thinner waist and overall tone. Once you hit adulthood a lot of things get in the way, study, careers, new family members and just everyday life. In no other time in history do we have greater access to fitness programs. Simultaneously we have the heaviest/obese generation ever, and dare I say it the unhealthiest. If you’re dieting or trying to lose weight, there’s a giant industry you should be familiar with. Americans spend $60 Billion on weight loss, every year! 75 million are actively trying to lose weight, at $800 per/person/year! $3 billion dollars to weight loss chains such as Weight Watchers. $3 billion on diet pills and meal replacement solutions, $1 billion home delivery services for diet food. 80% of dieters do it on their own, while 20% join a paid weight loss group. The typical dieter makes four attempts per year to try and lose weight. That's pretty dismal; because it means at least three diets fail. The $60 billion dollars is actually dwarfed by the $300 billion fast food industry and the $100 billion junk food industry. NZ Adult obesity statistics 2015/16: Health Survey found that: 32% (aged 15 years and over) were obese. 11% of children between 2 and 14 were obese. We need to personally make a conscious decision to take a
proactive stance with our health and well-being. At “The Jungle Gym” our philosophy and approach is more than just looking good. Bottom line, it’s about your health, therefore we offer something totally unique from all other gyms in Brown’s Bay. Here’s how we differ: • We advocate functional training and promote this through innovative exercises and equipment that differentiates us • Our core training mode is circuits - you exercise at different stations to a timed buzzer system. Our circuits are designed so on different days you work different body parts, i.e. Monday upper-body day, Tuesday leg day, Wednesday core etc. • Everyone does the same workout. You can come in any time of the day and not be restricted by class times • There’s always an instructor on the floor showing you through the circuits while motivating you • Programs change daily and weekly so you never do the same program and get bored • For our members, we offer free fitness assessments, nutritional advice and strength & conditioning training • Your workouts last anywhere between 20 to 45 minutes • We cater to all age groups and fitness levels, strength abilities, and even offer rehab programs • No contracts and no joining fee • You can bring your kids in while working out. Great for mums with young and older kids • We offer personal training sessions to achieve specific goals Come in for a week’s free trial and experience us for yourself. YES Disability Support Centre: News
Considerate and courteous car parking on the North Shore
By Mackenzie Kench of Yes Disability Resource Centre
Misuse of accessible parking is once again a hot topic in the press on talkback and here at the YES Disability Resource Centre, we have been inundated with questions and requests for comments, so in our article this month I will share our thoughts and what we know. CCS Disability Action monitored who used 360 accessible car parks around New Zealand. Accessible car parking is once again becoming a hot topic. It was found that 31% of the people who parked in these car parks did not have the CCS Disability Parking Permit, meaning they were illegally parked in these spaces. Furthermore, in a related interview, 74 people, roughly 17% of all the interviewees, admitted to parking in an accessible car park, when they should not have been parked there. While the results have slightly improved from a decade ago, where 35% of people illegally parked in accessible spaces, Yes Disability Resource Centre's Chief Executive Sonia Thursby says "towing-away deals with the long-term parking but not those who are only there five or 10 minutes," which make up the majority of offenders. Although offenders can be hit with a $150 fine, these fines are issued sporadically as it is currently dependent on the police and parking wardens being made aware of the situation. Subsequently, Sonia Thursby is currently investigating whether technology could be more effective in enforcing the appropriate use of accessible car parks. On the other hand, it is important to remember that those who have a permit should always comply with the terms and conditions of having one. For example, those with a permit may not use an accessible car park if they, personally, are not going to exit their vehicle. The truth of the matter is while it is easy to blame those who park in an accessible car park without having a permit, as the people creating the problem, doing so is not going to resolve the ongoing issue. Instead, everybody needs to be accountable for the correct and appropriate use of accessible car parks, whether they have a permit or not. www.yesdisability.org.nz

Life Lessons: with Life Education Trust
Love those kids
Happy New Year to everyone — I hope you all had an enjoyable break and are looking forward to an exceptional 2017. It should be another great year for us here at Life Education, with lots of positive stuff lined up. Our bookings are full for the year ahead with another 16,000 children planned to go through Barry Kirkour two mobile classrooms where we will reach Burnnand more than 85 per cent of all children in the age group our programme is aimed at over a two-year cycle. This month’s theme of “Love on the Shore” for the magazine ties in well with what we do — we love providing our programme “helping kids to make smart life choices” and we love hearing the positive comments from kids, teachers and parents about the effects that we have on kids’ lives. Our founding director Trevor Grice once said that a child without love is like a child trying to clap with one hand: kids need the love of a parent or guardian to help them grow through what can be pretty difficult years, and what we teach kids helps ease the burden that parents and kids often have. Although our programme is not specifically an anti-drug programme, we do touch on the subject of substances at Intermediate school, which is so important in today’s environment. I was reading a news item recently in a newspaper from Vancouver that someone left in a café and was horrified at some of the statistics from a city that I thought was often compared with Auckland.
Although our programme is not specifically an anti-drug programme, we do touch on the subject of substances at Intermediate school. The city has a real drug problem — in just one day in December, 13 people died of drug overdoses! And in the first 10 months of 2016 in British Columbia, 622 people died from illicit drug overdoses. I know that our record in Godzone isn’t something to be proud of, but we aren’t anywhere near as bad as what I see in Vancouver or British Columbia, and we must all work hard to make sure we never see illicit drug use reach those levels. Here at Life Education we work hard to do our bit and are proud of it. If you suspect that a child you know is using, find the courage to confront them. None of us can ignore the problem and we must work together to protect our future generation from this terrible scourge. A spokesman in the Vancouver article said, “You really can’t trust ecstasy, cocaine, crystal meth — any of that stuff. There’s no longer a safe way for kids to experiment. Your first time could be your last time.” Scary stuff. So heap every ounce of love that you have onto your kids and their close friends — it will be the best thing you have ever done in your life. Onwards and upwards. Barry Kirk-Burnnand, Chair, Life Education Trust North Shore chair@lifeeducationnorthshore.co.nz www.lifeeducationnorthshore.co.nz secretary@lifeeducationnorthshore.co.nz

Well Foundation: Update Brought to you by Board Chair, Craig Donaldson and CEO, Andrew Young.
Well Said
Andrew Young.
Craig Donaldson.
The start of a new year is normally the time for goal setting and making big plans. At the Well Foundation our goals are Waitemata DHB’s Child & Family team with the first clear, with the new mobile health clinic, and a second is on the way. The Well Foundation is also currently fundraising for a support of you third new clinic. and our wider community, we want to help provide the best healthcare possible for local people. Last year, our supporters made a big impact on local healthcare, from funding important equipment in the hospitals to enhancing vital services in the community that make accessing healthcare easier for our most vulnerable people. This year we will build on what has been achieved already, harnessing strong relationships with local people and businesses and creating new ones to keep making improvements at both North Shore and Waitakere hospitals and in the community. We kick off 2017 with exciting news that a second mobile health clinic has been fully funded and will be on the road soon. The second clinic will be used by public health nurses to do throat swabbing as a part of the Rheumatic Fever Prevention Programme and general health check ups, referrals to other services and provide treatment when needed. The second new clinic will be comfortable, spacious and designed specifically to stand up to demands of the growing service. Because mobile health services are so beneficial to a fast-growing and diverse local population, one of our first major priorities this year will be raising money for a third mobile clinic which will be used for providing dental care to more local children, especially in the many areas where tooth decay is big problem. We’re also making great progress with our hospital equipment projects with the $18,500 Portable Lower Abdominal Scanner for North Shore Hospital Emergency Department being completed late last year, largely thanks to the East Coast Bays Rotary Club who fundraised for the scanner at their annual golf day. The new equipment will help staff in this busy department diagnose medical and bladder issues faster and relieve patients of pain as quickly as possible. If you’d like to know about any of our current projects and how they will benefit patients and families of the North Shore, please visit www.wellfoundation.org.nz. If you’re setting goals for 2017 and are interested in supporting a local charity, aimed at providing better healthcare for you and your loved ones, we’d love to hear from you on 447 0138 or info@wellfoundation.org.nz. Or if you’d just like to get to know us a bit better and keep up with our latest news, please visit the website and sign up to our quarterly newsletter. Until next time, go well. A night out without a phone It was a few days after Christmas and I was at the dinner table with Mum and some family friends. We were in great conversation. Then... ring ring… ring ring… went the home phone. For our guests it was as if there was a crying baby in the room next door and it needed attention immediately. Although that is something I’m still to experience I hear that in some cases it’s good to leave that too! The guests couldn’t believe this and yes it would have been stink if it had been a phone call saying grandma was in hospital but chances were it wasn’t. A couple of weeks later I was watching an interview with Simon Sinek called ‘Millennials in the Workplace’. This guy is AWESOME and I’d recommend his talks for people who have some time to fill. He’s good, he’s real good in terms of thought provoking ideas that can enhance ones quality of life. Within the talk where he’s highlighting an impact of social media and technology he mentioned something that reminded me of that dinner a few weeks earlier... “If you’re sitting at a dinner with your friends and you’re texting someone who’s not there that’s a problem”. The talk got me thinking seriously about the intrusion of phones and social media. I asked myself why do I take my phone everywhere I go? My answers made me sound dependent and when my answer was "but I keep my money cards in the phone-case" I decided to dust off my wallet. That evening I went out to dinner with friends purposely leaving my phone on the kitchen bench. Up till now I thought I was pretty good at just leaving my phone in a pocket. But without it completely I felt a greater sense of independence and freedom – I didn’t have to worry about losing it, breaking it, responding to someone who wasn’t even there. It enabled me to be more creative, and when I saw a phone on every other table in the restaurant I simply thought to myself "Why?". When asked about my holiday I couldn’t just show the photos on my phone. I actually enjoyed taking people on an adventure as I described the holiday. When a phone rang, beeped, or lit up, and people checked to see if it was theirs, my focus stayed on who I was with – not who I wasn’t with. And without the distraction of social media during times of solitude I was able to think my own thoughts and form new connections. I was living! At the end of the evening I did wonder how I was going to get home when everyone was ordering Uber. But then I remembered this thing called a Taxi and like an Uber that drove me home too. I feel like such a Millennial right now, but yes my phone comes more places with me than anything else I own. During the evening without it I noticed heightened levels of connection, inspiration and awareness of my surrounds, equally I thought how bizarre it would have been for my grandparents to even conceptualise a night out without a phone. I’m still appreciative of phones and social media, they are powerful tools in my life. But when I’m at dinner, when I’m in a meeting, when I’m with friends, I want to ignore the ringing phone, eliminate the distractions of the beep, the lit screen and the vibrate. To embrace the present and enjoy increased levels of clarity, inspiration and focus.

New Zealand record set by LBC student Congratulations to Long Bay College student Connor Bell who competed in the Junior section at the National Secondary Schools competition. Connor won the Discus title by throwing 65m. Not only this, but he also broke the New Zealand Secondary Schools Junior record by 7m! This record of 58.12m was set in 2009 by Jacko Gill who has since moved on to represent New Zealand Connor Bell in the Olympics in Shotput. But Connor didn’t only break it once, he broke it four times in a row setting the final distance with his 5th throw. During the competition 4 out of 6 of his throws were past the previous record (all over 63m). Connor also went on to compete in the Junior Boys Shotput where he was able to win that event also, with a throw of 15.7m.

Class visit to Treaty grounds thanks to top prize Long Bay College art student Bea Terreblanche won the top prize for the Waitangi trust art competition in 2016. ‘Our Nations Children’ was a nationwide student art competition as part of an initiative aimed at having every child visit Waitangi before they leave school to better understand New Zealand’s Heritage. Our Nation's Bea Terreblanche Children started in 2013 with the goal to inspire and educate the next generation of New Zealanders to know and understand the history of the birthplace of New Zealand, and encourage more people to visit Waitangi and Northland. Thanks to Bea’s success in the competition, 15 Long Bay College students were able to visit the Treaty grounds recently, staying at the adjacent hotel. The activities during their 3 day stay included learning to chant and paddle a waka, visiting the Waitangi museum, sailing, and swimming with the dolphins. A great time was had by all. Congratulations once again to Bea!
