Meet the Team

We're loving it!

It is a thrill for our team to produce this Christmas 2014 issue of the Browns Bay Mag. This is the second issue of the magazine being under our direction and we feel we have made some real progress with this bumper issue – 48 pages including the cover! We have had a great response to the 'new look' magazine and can only see it growing from here. In this issue we also welcome the Bays Community Centre Newsletter that will be a feature of the magazine in most issues. This has lots of interesting community information about events and what's on, so is a great addition. For the previous issue we (i.e. Angela) personally delivered the magazine to all shops and businesses. As usual, the local scouts also placed them in letter boxes of 13,000 East Coast Bays homes. We were surprised about the pace at which the mags moved. The locals really enjoyed the new-look edition and we have had lots of positive feedback. To give you some idea of the speed at which they moved, 30 of them were placed by Angela at the La Tropezienne French Bakery in the first weekend and within 10 minutes they were all gone! We have some great content in this magazine, including lots of Christmas gift ideas and profiles on local businesses. Our goal is to entice you to spend your well-earned dollars locally and we have given you many reasons within these pages. There is great choice right here in the Bays and some wonderful new businesses. Unique New Zealand is an important local business that brings new people into Browns Bay. In this issue we celebrate their 25th anniversary with a feature on the private training institution that was set up back in 1989. We also have an interesting feature on Di Celliers community fruit harvesting venture, a profile on our flash new Caltex Service Station, as well as columns on travel, life coaching, real estate, property management, our local cafes, beauty, vehicle servicing, fitness, health and wellbeing, bathroom renovation, fashion and more! Something for everyone. We hope you enjoy the FREE read. We will be publishing the Browns Bay Mag bi-monthly in 2015. Look out for issues in early February, April, June, August, October and December. Feel free to contact us if you wish to include content in any future issues. We especially love our advertisers! That’s all from us – we look forward to working with you all in 2015. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and happy reading! Angela, Aidan and the team. Email: brownsbay@channelmag.co.nz

Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager

New businesses and website! The shopping centre is going through one of its biggest periods of positive change at the moment. In the last months, two new dress shops have opened – Calypso in the main street and February in Inverness Road. Another dress shop is due to open soon next to Calypso, giving you a greater choice for your clothing requirements. The new businesses in Anzac Road have opened adding to the variety we have in Browns Bay – Muffin Break, St Pierre’s Sushi, Tank, The Meat Room, Snap 24/7 Gym and Body Works. By the time this magazine comes out the Turkish Kebab shop will also be open. Our two Yoghurt stores have both undergone refits – one being rebranded KiwiYo and the Yoghurt Story adding a juice bar under new ownership. Add to this our famous Penguino Ice Cream Parlour and La Dolce Casa on the beachfront next to beach. café/bistro and all your summer dessert needs are well and truly taken care of. Christmas once again is a big occasion for everyone in Browns Bay. Our new six metres tall Christmas Tree is on display in the centre of the Plaza and adds to the lighting we put into the main street last year. And don’t forget our massive Christmas Parade on Saturday 6th December, starting at 5pm. Last year we had over 40 floats and we hope to have more this year. We will be holding another Christmas Market day on the same day, with lots of stalls with bargains for everyone. It starts at 11am and runs all day with music in the Plaza to entertain you.

The Life Coach: Vivienne Kelly, Momentum Life Coaching & Training

I Love What I Do: Malcolm McDonald

Does Your Teen Meeting Mr Penguino Need Bully-Proofing? Malcolm McDonald.

Malcolm McDonald is the owner of hugely popular ice cream shop Penguino Ice Cream Cafe, in Browns Bay. He has become a real identity in Browns Bay with his friendly personality, customer service and love of what he does. His background is in refrigeration, design, supply and install, all skills he says come in handy now he owns his own ice cream business with his wife Ann. Browns Bay Mag wanted to find out some more from Malcolm about the ins and outs of retail of the cold sweet stuff, working in Browns Bay and, of course, the toughest question of all… his favourite ice cream flavour! Courtney Bennett: What’s the best part about your job? Malcolm McDonald: When I see a child run to the counter with the biggest smile gushing with enthusiasm and asking for their best ice cream, walking out completely satisfied and saying: "Thanks Ice Cream Man!" CB: What is your background in business? MM: I have been in refrigeration, design, supply and install all my life, which really helps now, as our whole ice cream business revolves around refrigeration and freezing. CB: Why did you get involved in retail? MM: Having been involved in the supply of equipment and teaching the techniques to manufacture ice cream, I decided it was time to produce my own and open a shop outlet. CB: What does a typical day look like for you? MM: I’m up at 5am to pasteurise milk and begin producing ice cream. I watch the sun come up with a good cup of coffee and try to have my day's production done by 2pm. CB: Why is Browns Bay a great place to have an ice cream shop? MM: This will be our 13th Christmas in Browns Bay. It began with three hard years before we managed to get people to to enjoy freshly made gelato ice cream, but we now have a very loyal customer base on one of New Zealand’s best beaches, and a great community.

Why is it that some kids, teens and even adults seem to attract all the wrong attention from peers, while others glide through life with no issues in this department? One of the main keys to avoid bullying is confidence. The best kind, of course, is a deep sense of self-worth that oozes from your pores and seems to be almost tangibly present. A good start for some however, is to know how to appear confident while building that internal self-belief. In our Teens 4 Teens group coaching program, we work with 13-15 year olds in small groups to build a strong foundation of self-understanding and acceptance; communication skills and strategies to handle tricky situations; and some basic coaching skills on how to support others. (That has the added advantage of building confidence even further!). In an ideal world, teens would turn to the adults in their lives for support and guidance. However in reality, many of them turn to each other and receive bad advice. It was this realisation that sparked the idea of giving teens the skills to support each other in an effective manner. An exciting aspect of the Teens 4 Teens approach, is that it is co-facilitated by a skilled teen alongside a Momentum Life Coach. 14 year old Rachel Kelly, who has overcome challenges of her own, brings an inspiring presence in to the group and models how it is possible to take ownership over your life. To find out more about our next program dates or to register your interest, visit our website: http://www.coachmomentum.co.nz Professional Life Coaching is a positive, powerful and purposeful construction of your life as you would LIKE IT TO BE. If you are interested in receiving coaching or learning how to coach, contact me on 479-9986 or 021 0377289, email: vivkelly@coachmomentum.co.nz, or visit our website for more information: www.coachmomentum.co.nz.

CB: What are the ice cream or food places that you rate highly aside from Penguino? MM: I definitely feel Deep Creek has had a big impact on Browns Bay with their own brew and great food. Bollywood has brought a great atmosphere and curry to town as well. CB: Do you have a mentor you look to for advice? MM: I unfortunately grew up without a father and had to fend for myself, developing a good work ethic, which has resulted in reward and gratitude. CB: What’s your favourite ice cream flavour and why? MM: It changes from time to time. Right now it's banana, as it is made up of fresh bananas, and next month it will probably be mango and vanilla. We have such a choice of flavours. CB: What do you do in your spare time? MM: I love riding motorbikes, I brew my own beer, watch motor racing and like to keep up with the news. CB: If I wasn’t running Penguino for a career, I would be… MM: Supplying and installing refrigeration to the nation. Penguino Ice Cream, 55 Clyde Road Browns Bay, Phone: 09 476 8380

Real Estate: With Geraldine Zareian, MREINZ, Barfoot & Thompson

Local Cafes: Java Jungle Browns Bay

Confidence and Demand Drives 2014! There was a strong start to 2014 with buyer interest but the lowest number of new listings in more than 11 years. The traditional increase in March sales resulted from sensible price expectations to meet the market and demand with $1M+ homes accounting for 35 per cent of total Geraldine Zareian. residential sales. The market showed buoyancy through April and May with auction being the preferred method to go to market as 80% of properties sold within 7 days of auction. The onset of winter had its traditional impact on sales numbers and new property listings. However, prices continued to edge up during June. The market fell into a ‘wait and see’ mode during the run up to the elections, with the number of sales in the month falling. This delayed pre-Christmas trading season, and we will see high activity before the end of the year! 2015 is likely to be another exciting year as demand exceeds supply and investor confidence is stronger. Beach. - Beachfront Lane, Browns Bay

beach. – now open for dinner One of the Shore's best spots on the Browns Bay beach front Great news from the Browns Bay beach front – beach. that fabulous cafe is now open for dinner on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for 'family-style' shareable service with a menu that changes weekly. To reflect this new initiative the name has changed ever so slightly as well to 'beach. bistro'. Mains are priced at $25 per person, there is an optional platter to share [$14 per portion] and a choice of two desserts that includes coffee or tea [$14 per person] All mains are portioned in bowls and accompanied by bowls of potato and tossed salad greens, a great ‘shareable’ experience. Check-out their website for more details and look out for a GrabOne deal coming very soon. Let's talk Coffee – with Steve from beach.bistro “All Baristas are coffee makers – not all coffee makers are Baristas” barista: a trained professional skilled in the art preparing perfect espresso based coffees The coffee in your cup or glass is final stage of a long journey from a pair of beans in a berry from a coffee tree to the delicately roasted blends of your coffee companies, the coffee maker is often the weakest link. There is an art in ‘pulling’ the perfect shot, the grind has to be right, the ‘tamp’ just so and the cup nice and hot otherwise they have just made you hot brown water that may taste of coffee. What is in a name? Unfortunately not all cafes follow the same recipes when it comes to your coffee.

Here is an explanation of our favorite beverages:Shot: 8-10gms of perfectly ground fresh beans, extracted to 20-30mls of fabulous black coffee. Espresso: 2 shots in a small glass or cup (demi tasse). Long Black: 2 shots in a hot cup with hot water on the side (as with a Single Malt Scotch everyone's level of water is different). Flat White: 1 shot with velvet milk (a kiwi invention). Cappuccino: 1 shot w/ velvet & foamy milk topped with chocolate or cinnamon. Latte: 2 shots in a 300ml glass with velvet milk. Extra Hot: if your coffee maker is a Barista, they will know that velvet milk is steamed to 65ºc, hotter than this and it will collapse into thin milk often with a burnt after-taste. Perfectly hot coffee is served in a hot cup. Start asking for a hot Cup or Glass, you won't offend your Barista and will educate your coffee maker. Hospo Tip #205 "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar." Hospitality staff respond better to the sweeter approach than to a sour attitude.

Alternatives to Milk “Soy milk is not your only option to Lactose issues.” At beach.bistro they take your enjoyment of coffee and your health seriously, offering a range of options. Firstly, they exclusively use locally farmed Organic blue and trim, it just tastes so much better. They also have: Barista SOY: organic and gluten free (125 Cal per latte). Almond Milk: gluten free, low fat and high in antioxidant vitamin E (198 Cal per latte). Rice Milk: cholesterol and gluten free, zero lactose GM free brown rice (125 Cal per latte) Buffalo Milk: an A2 milk, a rich source of riboflavin, vitamins B12, A and C (252 cal per latte). beach. bistro – 1a Beachfront Lane • Browns Bay. FEATURE: Unique New Zealand Language School

Love of Language and Browns Bay, the Unique Way

Clyde Road Centre Celebrates Silver Anniversary Bright young minds have been heading to Browns Bay from across the world for 25 years. From South America, Russia, Germany, China, Japan, Tahiti and Thailand, to name just a few, students land to learn better English and also leave with a love of the Shore. Unique New Zealand is ‘the school on the beach’, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. Academic Director Faith Gale is a recognisable face in neighbourhood, having been a leading figure at Unique for 11 years. Her and the team’s passions for teaching and giving visiting students the best possible experience of their time in Browns Bay have been driving forces behind the school’s success. Their English Plus scheme enables students to learn English in a classroom setting in the morning, then head out to experience language in its everyday use in the afternoon. Faith said: “Their English improves not only because of the teaching, but also due to the fact that they are having fun. They go out for the rest of the day and experience some of the wonderful sites and activities on offer, and don’t have to stress about using the language in a formal setting.” A large percentage of families in Browns Bay are homestay families, according to Faith. “It’s a great recipe for success. The families are absolutely fantastic in the main and they offer a home away from home for the students.” Homestay families provide accommodation and hospitality to students for anything from two weeks to two years. Faith sees the programme as a win-win for students, families and also the local business community. She said: “Our students come and they spend a lot of money here in the local Browns Bay community; they eat at all the different cafes and they generally spend up large! They bring a lot of business to the area.” The school is resolute in its aim to provide a learning experience - and living experience - of the highest quality for visitors who range in age from 8 years to adult. In the classrooms, the very latest technology and teaching methods are used, with iPads and modern interactive technology tools being commonplace. Classes are tailored to juniors’, teens’ or adults’ learning needs by members of the 20-strong teaching team who are, without exception, hold industryapproved specialist English Language teaching qualifications. Operations Manager Katie Tanaka, who, like Faith, has also been at Unique for 11 years said: “A lot of people have the impression that if you speak English, you can teach it. That is not the case. It’s a very specialised area. Our teachers are all very committed and excellent at what they do.” And outside the classroom, support and integration is of paramount importance. Faith said: “We have a high level of pastoral care for our students. Our admin team is made up of a number of advisors who come from the various different countries that our students come from. “The model that we use is that the students are the customers of the advisors.

If they have any issues these can be discussed and resolved in their own language.” A recent development in working rights legislation is set to have a significant impact on the experience students are able to have during their time in Browns Bay with Unique. Job Connect is a new scheme that enables students who come for 14 weeks or more, on a student visa, to work for up to 20 hours per week. Faith said: “That will open the door for many students. There will be a lot of South Americans, and others, who will now take up this opportunity as they will be able to help fund their stay whilst they are here. We have already actually seen quite a lot of success with that.” The Clyde Road-based centre, which occupies buildings at number one and number 24, has the highest possible level of NZQA accreditation for a private training institution. It offers IELTS - International English Language Teaching System - and recently became a test centre for Massey University. To still be going strong since its inception in 1989, shows Unique has the formula for success and has adapted and grown this through changing times. To mark its 25 year birthday, Unique sent out 400 cupcakes as invitations to the local business community to join in a day of celebration on Saturday November 8th, which included cultural performances, food and displays showcasing cultures from around the world. Local Cafes: La Tropezienne French Bakery

Giselle Camp.

Danielle and Steve Bierge, pastry chef.

Are your two greatest loves Coffee and Cake?

Angela Johnson visits Browns Bay’s French Patisserie La Tropezienne Bonjour Messieurs, Dames – est-ce que je peux avoir... Browns Bay Mag's Angela Johnson reminisces about Paris at La Tropezienne in Browns Bay. Browns Bay's French bakery – La Tropezienne – is certainly a place you can come to relax and unwind, it’s reminiscent of the past times and in flavour with the typical stance and atmosphere you would find in Paris. Sitting here at La Tropezienne listening to the lovely French music whilst ordering my breakfast in French, reminds me of my travels in France and typically Paris as the Eiffel Tower looms over the counter in a jovial manner. ‘Un pain au chocolat avec un café, s’il vous plait, ’ I say to the lovely waiter named Henry on the counter at La Tropezienne and yes it’s all smiles here as everyone soaks up the French atmosphere whilst enjoying true authentic French cuisine at a fantastic price. In our last article we caught up with Louis to get his amazing life story. But alas, it seems we got a bit wrong. Apologies as it turns out that Louis did do his military service in New Caledonia, so sorry Louis there goes that bad boy image! All jokes aside I am sure we all can agree that we are lucky that Louis chose New Zealand for his home

otherwise Browns Bay would be one short of a French bakery and none the wiser about French cuisine. So what does La Tropezienne have in store for us this Christmas? I have come to discover what tasty treats we are about to uncover this year, seeing as my personal two favourite loves are coffee and cake... and delve deep into the depths of the festive season to let you know in advance what will be coming out of this amazing French kitchen. Don’t tell your friends, as this may be Browns Bay's best kept secret... Traditional Christmas Mince Pies - an ancient English recipe improved with authentic French brandy. They are a top seller here in Browns Bay and are in-store from November 10th. As are the Traditional La Tropezienne French Christmas Logs, another something to sink your teeth into that also look amazing on the table for that special Christmas function. So make sure you come on down and enjoy some of this amazing French cuisine this Christmas. If you haven't experienced La Tropezienne, then you don't know what you missing. Pop in and see Louis and his team at Clyde Court, Browns Bay. Phone 478 8798. Also at Milford and Takapuna.

Health, Fitness & Beauty: Beachside, Browns Bay Sarah Kitcher of Beachside Beauty is an internationally qualified beauty therapist with over 18 years experience in all aspects of Spa, Beauty, Health and Wellbeing. Summer is all about baring your skin and showing off your beauty. But have no fear, in this issue Sarah provides her top five beauty tips that will keep you looking and feeling fabulous this summer.

Sarah Kitcher.

This month, Browns Bay's popular community gym – Beachside Health & Fitness – celebrates 21 years serving the needs of the people of Browns Bay and the wider North Shore area. In this issue, Karl Puohotaua – the manager at Beachside Health and Fitness – covers the benefits of exercise for diabetics. He is a type one diabetic himself.

Karl Puohotaua.

The Countdown To Summer Has Begun!

The benefits of exercise for Diabetes...

1. Exfoliate Your Body: In order to get that skin glowing we need to take some time to reverse the signs of neglect we are all a little guilty of during those long winter months. Everyday your body is shedding skin cells. So grab your favourite body scrub and hit the showers. Gently massage your exfoliant in circular movements over your entire body (you might want a separate exfoliant for your face and neck) then rinse clean, following up with your favourite body moisturiser. Doing this two-three times a week will get you glowing in no time. Product Pick: Skin Truth Stimulating Body Scrub with Black Pepper and Menthol. 2. Now to fake a Summer Tan: There is no doubt having a tan makes you feel thinner, sexier and healthier. Now instead of body cream after exfoliating, why not try a self-tanning cream once a week. A good self-tanning product will last a good five to seven days gradually fading. To make sure your golden glow goes the distance, you will need to keep your skin hydrated from both the outside and the inside. This means drinking plenty of water and applying a good daily moisturiser. Product Pick: Tantastic Gel with Application Mitt. 3. Its all about the Eyes: Throw away that old mascara and eyebrow pencil. Consider getting an Eyelash and Eyebrow tint. Get up in the morning looking like you already have your eye make up on – who wants to be wearing eye make up at the beach? The results will last four to six weeks Then to really make your eyes pop why not get an Eyebrow shape at the same time, this will add so much definition and give you that neat groomed look. After all they do say the eyes are the windows to your soul. 4. Waxing: Now is the time to consider waxing. It will keep that bikini line, underarms and legs smooth, bump free and swimsuit ready. Hair is removed from the root, so it takes longer for the hair to grow back, anywhere from three to six weeks depending on the individual speed of hair growth. 5. Those precious Feet: Our feet get very little care compared to other parts of our body, but healthy feet are so vital to our overall health. The most enjoyable part of a good salon pedicure is the massage. Hard dry skin is removed from heels and toes, nails are trimmed and buffed, cuticles are left neat and tidy. Then a bit of fun with a beautiful nail colour to suit any season. Product Pick: Skintruth pedi Peppermint Heel Repair Cream.

Staying fit and active helps you avoid the long term complications associated with diabetes. Fitness has been an integral part of me getting back to good health and keeping my blood glucose levels under control. Sure it's a constant juggling act but with regular exercise and healthier food choices it makes it so much easier to manage.

Feel free to contact me on 0221850464. You can book online at www.beachsidebeauty.co.nz.Beachside Beauty – 30 Anzac Road, Browns Bay.

What are the benefits of exercise for Diabetics? Better control of blood glucose levels; Psychological benefit; Improved cardiovascular function; Reduced risk of heart disease (diabetics are a higher risk); Lower blood pressure; Increase in energy levels; Weight control; Lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 Diabetes? TYPE 1 Diabetes is an immune disorder where the body cannot produce insulin and glucose stays in the blood where it damages the organs. People with type 1 Diabetes must take insulin in order to survive. TYPE 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It causes a build up of glucose in the blood. For many people it can be prevented or controlled with medication and following a healthy active lifestyle. Some cases warrant use of insulin but not all. Although most people are shaken by a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes many people come to see the diagnosis in a more positive light, as a wake up call. It is often an incentive to become more active, to eat healthier food and manage your body weight. What are the symptoms of type 1 and type 2 Diabetes? Thirst; Frequent infections; Passing more urine; Poor eyesight or blurred vision; Weight loss; Often feeling hungry; Very tired; Mood changes. The benefits of exercising is unquestionable. You put yourself at even more risk by not exercising. Our team will guide you on all the safe and effective exercise options to help you toward better health. We run green prescription memberships here at Beachside which is a discounted rate prescribed by your doctor. Enquire about it or come and see us directly at 30 Anzac Road, Browns Bay. FEATURE: Fruit Harvesting with Di Celliers

Di Celliers.

Feel-Good Fruit Di Celliers Community Fruit Harvesting Venture Do you always mean to use up all of the lemons or grapefruit, plums or feijoas on that prolific tree in your garden, but never get around to it? Think of the dozens of laden fruit trees you pass in your neighbourhood on a daily basis. All that goodness generally going to waste. Well not any more, thanks to Di Celliers and her Community Fruit Harvesting venture. Browns Bay Mag asked Di a few questions to learn more. A Shore resident since 1996, Di, who has lived in Brown’s Bay since 2010, recognised the extreme wastage of backyard tree fruit in her neighbourhood as an opportunity to make a difference. In June 2011 Di began organising volunteers to go around the community and collect unwanted fruit from people’s homes. The fruit is then made into preserves and cordials, and either sold to raise money for charity, or given to food banks. “I had just started a community garden and orchard,” Di explains. “After the first year, seeing how small the fruit trees were in comparison to the large abundant but unused fruit trees in the area, it seemed pointless to put so much effort into planting new trees when so many were going to waste. I thought I could ask people if they would be prepared to share some of their excess fruit. And they were.” Aside from the very occasional refusal, mainly due to language barriers, Di has found community members to be very obliging when it comes to having their fruit picked. “The fruit tree owners love to see their excess fruit going to a good cause and not going to waste,” says Di. “I have so many good feedback stories. Everyone involved - from the fruit tree owners, to pickers and preservemakers and those who work in the food banks - are all amazing, positive, giving people.” With an exceptional glut of grapefruit on the Shore, Di and her team have been working to promote that fruit via their grapefruit cordial. “A lot of older people who do like the taste of grapefruit often cannot eat it due to a reaction with their medication, and younger people just don’t like it,” Di says. “Through our cordial we are hoping to promote the use of grapefruit – cordial is something people of all ages love, once they give it a taste. We would really love to promote this through schools as well. I believe people

www.brownsbay.org.nz

should be educated about using the food that grows most easily around them.” With over 250 volunteer fruit pickers and over 45 preserve makers in Auckland, Di has lost track of the number of gardens that have been picked since the project’s inception, but estimates they have gathered well over 70,000kgs of fruit. “We’ve picked over 165 gardens just in Auckland since June of this year!” Di says, giving an idea of the size of her project, which looks set to only get bigger. If you have unwanted fruit to be picked, or would like to help out in any way, please contact Di at pickfruit@xtra.co.nz , or on 021 228 9020. For more information visit the website at www.pickfruit.co.nz, or https://www.facebook.com/pickfruit.

As our days are getting longer, and with the promise of finer weather upon us, it is a great time to become more active or incorporate some outdoor activities into your training plan. A change is as good as a holiday, and when it comes to exercise, a change also accelerates your fitness results. Here are some simple ideas on how to increase your activity outdoors. Little and Often: It is generally recommended to be active for 30 minutes a day. You can simply go for a walk or get out and tidy up your garden. If you have limited time, you can break your 30 minutes down into 3 smaller 10-minute efforts. Run or walk a new route each week: Mixing up your training routes allows you to enjoy new sights and face new challenges. Include hills or stairs as a means of interval training: By simply including hills or a staircase into your route, the physical demands placed on your body are increased. Vary the Terrain: You can mix up your cardio training by simply varying the terrain you choose. Walking or running is very different if you choose roads, trails or even the beach. Add some resistance based bodyweight exercises: Mix some body weight exercises into your walk or run. Squats, Press Ups, Lunges, Crunches...Pull Ups. Use the Environment: When you are exercising outdoors, you have all kinds of ‘objects or natural forms’ to use as ‘exercise apparatus’. Use your imagination as a park bench, a playground or staircase can be turned into a challenging exercise. Cycle to Work: Cycling is a fantastic way to exercise and a great mode of transport. By cycling to work, school or around town, you can incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH A SINGLE STEP

Sign up to an Event: There are lots of different sporting events that cater for a wide range of abilities. Training for a specific purpose helps you stay motivated and encourages you to push yourself. You will feel fantastic as you reach the finish line. Social Sports: Being active is the key to staying healthy. Joining a social sports league is a fantastic way to combine being active and having fun with friends. Bathrooms with Bathrooms Inc.

I Love Where I Live: Professor Ian Watson

Ian Watson at home in Torbay. Paul and Becky.

Your local Bathroom Specialists

Bathrooms Inc in the heart of Browns Bay on Clyde Road Life’s a bath, and installing bathrooms that look great and are fully functional is all about knowing your stuff. During October I popped in to see Paul Jackaman at Bathrooms Inc. in Clyde Road and were literally having a laugh in the bath whilst learning a lot about how they do business in the centre of Browns Bay. And it was all good! The Bathrooms Inc. showroom (in the main street of Browns Bay) was opened by Paul Jackaman in 2009. Paul project manages all the bathroom renovations for his customers from start to finish. At any one time he can have up to 10 different tradesmen required to work in a small space, so the management of the project is a crucial aspect. Paul has over 25 years’ experience in the bathroom renovation business within New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In 1984 after studying in the UK for four years Paul became a Master Plumber, Gasfitter and Drainlayer. Whilst in the UK, apart from bathroom renovations, he also specialised in installing central heating systems. He moved to New Zealand in 2005 and started up his own renovation business “Bathrooms Inc.” from home. From there it grew and now operates out of the Browns Bay showroom (thanks to hard work and us Kiwis appreciating good workmanship!). Since opening, Paul says the response from the local community has been fantastic and has meant from day one Bathrooms Inc has gone from strength to strength. So if you’re thinking of renovating your home Bathrooms Inc. is a great place to start, they offer the full renovation and installation package for new bathrooms, and for those of you who like to “Do it yourself” they offer a large range of quality products and tiles which can be sold separately from their fully tiled showroom displays or can be sourced from their suppliers. They also supply all trades should you require a Plumber, Electrician or Builder. Renovating your bathroom is no small task. Luckily for us Bathrooms Inc is local to Browns Bay so why not pop in to the Showroom to see either Paul or Becky to get some friendly advice with ideas to renovate or install a new bathroom or your free in home no obligation quote. Oh and while you’re there you might like to check out their display of central heating products in time for next winter! Bathrooms Inc – 57 Clyde Road, Browns Bay. The Shore, according to Professor Watson Professor Ian Watson was the foundation principal of Massey University's Albany Campus. The University first opened on the North Shore in 1993 under his leadership. He retired in 2004. Ian and his wife Patsy moved to the North Shore from Massey Palmerston North when the University first opened at Albany, settling in Torbay, and have been there ever since. In the two decades he has lived on the Shore he has played a big part in the community. Ian told Courtney Bennett in mid-October that they love the Bays and won't be moving anywhere else. Courtney Bennett: What do you love most about living on the Shore? Ian Watson: What we really love is the tie between proximity to beaches and proximity to shops. This gives us a great lifestyle. We have lived in a few different places over the years and this is probably the best! CB: Have you always lived locally? IW: Since December 1995. Two fantastic decades on the North Shore! CB: Where are the best walks around your area? IW: We love walking at low tide along Browns Bay Beach and then around to Rothesay Bay. The walk from Waiake Beach to Winstone’s Cove is also a real beauty. There are parts of the walk where you wouldn't know you are still within the boundaries of the largest city in the country. CB: Do you have a favourite local event that you look forward to? IW: It's good to catch the itinerant singers who make use of the stage, as one goes about ones business in the Browns Bay village. In the warmer months there is a real buzz about the place and we love the linkage through to the beachfront. CB: Do you get the Browns Bay Magazine and Channel delivered to your letterbox? IW: Yes, I am lucky to have Channel posted to me regularly and I look forward to reading all the local news in the Browns Bay Magazine. It's great to read about all the good and positive things happening in our local community. CB: If we moved we would move to … IW: Moving is not on the agenda! We really like it here. The only place we move to regularly is our beach property in the Far North. How lucky are we to live at the beach all year round!

Colleen Bryant: Transformational Coach and Trainer

Bays local Colleen creates viable pathways to change for her clients Bays local Colleen Bryant is a transformational coach and trainer who specialises in values coaching, drug-free depression treatment, and small business coaching. “I offer the gift of change – no guilt, no shame, no regrets,” explains Colleen. Colleen creates viable pathways to change for her clients. She does this by educating the individuals’ own ability to undertake and cope with major life changes. Clearing negative emotions from the past experiences, and revisiting unhelpful decisions made way back in the past is an important tool used to bring about profound change in her coaching clients. “My freedom today is due to my ability to change my mind, choosing to learn how to identify at a heart level what I want in my life. This has made the difference and continues to give me great experiences of pure joy.” Colleen will guide you through identifying your heart’s desire, creating more of what you want using the resources you have now, and enhancing your ability to move forward. People who know and have experienced Colleen’s work say that she has a unique way of connecting through her compassion and empathy towards others which makes her a transformational coach like no other. “I ask those difficult questions that get to the core of the problem... I like it to a scaffolding that’s a bit wobbly when you’re painting the outside of the house or building a new one... it wobbles because of only one little connection being un-aligned. If you can fix that key component then the scaffolding becomes strong and able to do it’s job." "Last month I spoke at the Lupus Support Group about “Matters of the Heart” which clarifies where our emotions come from and how we can use them to empower us in wellness and success in our daily lives. They had this to say..." “Colleen was the guest speaker for Lupus North Shore recently and she has a relaxed way of imparting her knowledge to an audience. She uses her skills and life experience to help people reach their potential and personal wellness," Linda, Lupus North Shore. Specific areas she works in include: Small Business Coaching – As a creator of businesses in her own right and a visionary growth expert Colleen thrives on helping business owners implement growth strategies that bring the cash into their back pockets. I Love My Pet: Linda Rein

Walking the beaches with Zoe the Schnack Linda Rein with Zoe.

Linda Rein runs the Browns Bay Community English school and has been a dog owner her entire life. Since moving to Auckland 20 years ago from South Africa, Linda’s had the pleasure of walking her dogs on East Coast Bays beaches and absolutely loves it. Linda talks to Browns Bay Mag about her playful pooch Zoe, the Schnack. Courtney Bennett: What do you love about pets? Linda Rein: Unconditional love and admiration, and also the fact that they are never grumpy. CB: Tell us about your pet… LR: Zoe is a three-year-old ‘Schnack’ (Schnauser cross Jack Russell). She's always full of beans and it is impossible to tire her out! CB: Do you have any other favourite animals? LR: I love baby pigs, but I think dogs are a firm favourite. CB: How did you come to own your pet? LR: We never felt our family was complete without a dog and when we lost our previous dog, Finn, I survived six months without a dog. CB: What’s Zoe’s favourite hobby? LR: She loves being chased around the sofa in the middle of the family room with her toy lion in her mouth. It's almost impossible to catch her. She also loves to bark at the tui in the pohutakawa tree. CB: What’s your view on social media pages for pets? LR: Absolute rubbish. Ridiculous! CB: Would you allow your pets to wear clothes? LR: Never, Zoe can't believe her eyes when she sees a dog in a jacket or wearing a scarf. CB: Where’s the best place to walk dogs on the Shore in your opinion? LR: Browns Bay beach is very friendly and sociable and Centennial Park, in Campbells Bay, is nice when the tide is too high for a beach walk. CB: Is the North Shore a pet-friendly place? LR: Yes very. We've met so many lovely people walking their dogs. We don't always remember the humans' names but we do know the dogs' names. CB: I wouldn't be without Zoe because... LR: She gets me out for a walk every day, rain or shine. She's always pleased to see me and is constantly cheerful.

The time you have to celebrate a life is precious. At Forrests we will help you make that time memorable. East Coast Bays 8 Glen Road. Browns Bay. Ph 09 479 5956 | Hibiscus Coast 39 Riverside Road, Orewa. Ph 09 426 7950 Email: office@forrests.co.nz | WWW.FORRESTS.CO.NZ

Skin Deep Face and Body Studio

Passionate new owner at Skin Deep

It's an 'inside-job' as a familiar face takes the reigns Popular Browns Bay beauty spot Skin Deep Face and Body Studio is under new ownership. Customers, however, will be familiar with new owner Claire Knapp as she has worked for previous owner Odette at Skin Deep for the past four years. In early November I caught up with Claire for a chat about her exciting news at Java Jungle Cafe. From the outset it was obvious that she is passionate about the beauty industry. The young mum is a real dynamo who juggles parenting duties for her two year old toddler with her husband Ashley, a builder, with the aid of a local creche. "It is a lovely industry to be in as our role is to make people feel good," explained Claire. "The depth of experience we have at Skin Deep along with our range of great natural products makes this an enjoyable process for all. We simply love what we do. When Odette said she was looking for a change I jumped at the chance. I'm a believer that you have to take these opportunities when you can. This is a great business with a great location." Claire originally trained in beauty with the Elite Academy on the Shore. She graduated with honours and was the student of the year in 2009. She now has five years experience. Other fully qualified and experienced beauticians assisting Claire at Skin Deep include Celia Louis and Sarah Hazeldine. "We will continue Odette's policy of combining great products with very competitive prices," adds Claire. "These products include La Clinica (a totally organic range), Dermaquest, Dermalogica, Pure Fiji and Eco Tan. We offer a tranquil environment with your relaxation and rejuvenation in mind." Skin Deep Face and Body Studio treatments include waxing, massage, facials, brow shaping, lash tinting, lash perming, microdermabrasion, IPL, pedicures and manicures. Their ever popular Best Massage in Town will leave you instantly relaxed. It's that time of the year when we take off our warm layers of clothing, treat yourself to our Island Wrap Treatment, it will leave your body beautifully hydrated and smooth and our Exotic Foot Ritual will prepare your feet and toes for the summer season. Skin Deep Face and Body Studio have Gift Vouchers available that are a great Christmas present.

Local Real Estate with Angela Johnson

My "Real" Job...

By Angela Johnson – Licensed Salesperson, Ray White Browns Bay Angela wears two hats. She loves helping to promote Browns Bay through her involvement with the Browns Bay Business Association and this fine magazine. She is also a dynamic local real estate agent with Ray White. She writes this regular column with her Ray White hat on, commentating on local real estate. The real estate market is starting to get busier as we move into the summer months, following typical summer trends. We are seeing an increase of listings into the month of November with the trend still being a combination of Auctions, listed Prices and tenders. I have just had the pleasure of selling my listing at 68 Sunnynook Road, Sunnynook on November 9th. A lovely family home a stone’s throw away from the shops. We had an amazing turnout for the Auction and a fantastic result for my vendors. My Happy Vendors, Linda and Peter were elated with the results and I asked them what their thoughts were on my services and the auction process.

Selling your home is a very stressful and emotional time and Angela managed this whole process for us exceptionally well. “Angela is a pleasure to work with. She is very enthusiastic and has some very good ideas about how to add value and make the property more presentable without over capitalising. Angela has very good communication skills and always keeps you informed on what is happening. She is very professional and calm even when challenges arise – and firm but fair when she needs to be. Selling your home is a very stressful and emotional time and Angela managed this whole process for us exceptionally well. We are delighted with the outcome of the auction process and with Angela Johnson as our agent. We couldn’t recommend her more highly, she will always do her very best for you." I was thrilled with this result for Linda and Peter. If you are looking to sell your home I would love to get the same result for you. Simply call me on 021-107-6637 or email: angela.johnson@raywhite.com.

Community Gem: Brooke Settle

Brooke’s Drive to Beat the Bullies

Brooke Settle.

Courtney Bennett: Can you tell us about your work at school with bullying? Brooke Settle: At Murrays Bay I am part of the Action Group, which is like a student council. We recently finished a programme called Wide Eyes, it ran for four sessions. We learnt how to communicate and relate to others, sort of like a peer mediation programme. Everyone learnt some valuable life lessons. I am also part of a Stand By Me anti-bullying project, which is run by Anna Crane. Stand By Me has organised events like mufti days and bake sales for raising anti-bullying awareness. Because of Stand By Me, I decided to write an article providing parents with information about cyber bullying, which was published in the local newspaper and the school newsletter. We were also filmed by Campbell Live. I am also part of a Youth Leadership Team which is similar to Stand By Me, and we meet once a month.

A mission to put a stop to bullying has launched a Mairangi Bay girl into the media spotlight, attracting national attention for her efforts. Not that she’s not used to being in the limelight, already having a fledgling modelling career with several international brands, but now it is her antibullying stance that has 12-year-old Brooke Settle causing a stir. Brooke, a School Leader for 2014 at Murrays Bay Intermediate School, also loves to play netball, boating, sea-biscuiting and enjoying the outdoors as much as she can. Courtney Bennett put some questions to the young antibullying campaigner... CB: What do you like most about helping other people and why is it important to help others? BS: I love helping other people and knowing that they are ok and that everyone is happy. It is important to me knowing that my confidence makes others more confident, and we can all be happy just being ourselves. CB: What do you enjoy most about Murrays Bay Intermediate? BS: Everything! Absolutely everything is perfect. I have made many new friends and everyone is so lovely. The teachers trust you which is really cool so we are not treated like children. We get to try new subjects like Robotics, Food Tech, Hard Tech, Soft Tech, Graphic Design and so many more! Just yesterday I made a wrap in Food Tech, we had loads of fun! CB: What’s your favourite part about living on the North Shore? BS: I love the North Shore because everyone is always so friendly and happy. Travel Magazine says that Auckland is the friendliest city in the world - it really is the best there is. Whenever I go out any where I always bump into people I know and if not, I meet new people and that's always good fun. We are spoilt for choice with our many beautiful and safe parks and beaches. We really do live in paradise on the North Shore.

Open for Summer Freshly made gelato ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes and drinks. Low in fat Great in taste

OPEN LATE DEC / JAN

CB: Do you have any favourite community events you look forward to? BS: This month on the Browns Bay beachfront there is going to be an anti-bullying Rock Concert for young people to come along and perform what they want! We are going to have an awesome day so definitely come along. This is organised by the Youth Leadership team. CB: Who are the people you admire most and why? BS: I really admire Nelson Mandela because he stood up for what he believed in. After all he had been through he still did it, and to me that is true leadership and courage. I am definitely going to carry on to the future respecting people for who they are, just like Nelson Mandela. CB: Anything you feel we could better as a community? BS: We are the friendliest city in the world but I feel young teens are not noticed as much as they should be, and making sure they are happy and confident about themselves is important. Our community could feel good knowing how to treat and support unhappy teenagers. CB: When I grow up, I’m going to be… BS: A really fit athlete, maybe a netball player. That way I can be a good role model to others, I have played since I was five years old so basically my entire life! As a netball North Harbour Rep player and being a captain for many of my school teams I would like to be a member of an elite netball squad, and hopefully bring some of my peers with me. If not that then I would love to write a book or series similar to Harry Potter since I am obsessed with both the books and movies!

Travel: with House of Travel, Browns Bay

Spotlight On: Shore Wools

Celebrating our 10th Year of Travel in Browns Bay By Yvonne Payne, House of Travel Browrns Bay

My team and I have been the face of House of Travel Browns Bay since 2004. During that time I have seen travel agencies come and go - the internet, new brands, direct business Kelda, Yvonne, Charlotte, - they all seemed to change our Amanda and Geoff. landscape. But the fact remains that here we are at House of Travel doing well and loving our locals. Many factors contribute to a good holiday or the right travel deal. But at the end of the day we all just want to know we’re going to have some good R&R and great experiences – without blowing our budget. The internet is fantastic for putting so much out there in front of us, but how do you cut through the mire and work out what’s right for you…? The myth of travel agents being more expensive has changed – we use the internet too. In fact we match and often better the internet. However we do much more than that. What I enjoy so much is the buzz in the office – the energy that we enjoy working with you on your travel – developing a “bespoke” experience. You are individuals with your own needs and loves, and we enjoy hearing that and helping to put that together. Travel is a great experience – we love giving that sense of fun and anticipation right from the first day. Come and see us, bring in your ideas – we would love to talk about the savings now out for UK and Europe. We don’t want you to miss the best chance to save and would love to help you "cut through the clutter". Check out the House of Travel website and you’ll find heaps of inspiring travel stories and ideas to many destinations. We are running a series of short travel info evenings instore, with each session running for approximately 45 minutes – there is something for every European traveller and a chance to win your tour price back for one*. I am recently just back from a Turkey tour and all revved up to tell you about the hottest Europe destination. So, don’t be shy to call in and have a chat to either me (Yvonne), Kelda, Geoff, Amanda or Charlotte at House of Travel Browns Bay – 17A Clyde Road, Browns Bay. Or email me at yvonne@hot.co.nz or give us a call on 4791003. *Available for all deposited Globus/Cosmos tours worldwide, excluding Avalon River cruises. Up to the value of $3500.00 non-refundable and non-transferable, for one person booked only, drawn 31st March 2015.

New Business Spotlight: Little Greece Greek Delicatessen

Taste Greece at Little Greece

Angela Johnson discovers a little bit of Greece right here in Browns Bay There is much history and mythology surrounding the origins of the Olive Tree. According to the Greek Mythology the Olive Tree was given to the Athenians by Athena the daughter of Zeus which was the Goddess of Wisdom. Athena planted the first olive tree on the sacred Rock of Acropolis earning her the right to protect the city of Athens and that is exactly what the proud owners of a new small store named 'Little Greece' did when they occupied their new store in Browns Bay. They planted four olive trees in the front of their premises for good luck! ‘Little Greece’, located at the end of Wilk Lane (just off Beach Road) is now the heart of a truly thriving importing business that specialises in olive oil and many other traditional Greek products. I visited 'Little Greece' to see what I could find out about their business and met Emily and Donald (Giannis) Montes who originate from Athens in Greece and migrated to New Zealand back in 2010. Browns Bay and the areas around the Shore are highly multicultural but not too much from Greece has emerged to date, so off I went to get some information about this exciting new business Little Greece.

Emily Montes.

Great Christmas

Donald, it’s lovely to see an authentic new business come to Browns Bay. How did you come into this business? Coming from Greece and having a passion for our homeland products we thought it would be a good idea to share our passion with New Zealand’s consumers, as many have visited our home country and love the local cuisine. Where are your products from? Almost all of our products here at Little Greece are imported by us from various areas in Greece – such as Kalamata, Crete and Evia. We only source the very best goods for our friends and customers. Emily, what products do you sell at Little Greece? We have a wide variety of products from olive oils, olives, stuffed vine leaves (dolmades), vinegars and many more traditional delicacies all made in Greece. We also have a small range of homemade delicacies available such as Baklava, Spanakopita,

Taramasalata and Tzatziki. All produced in commercial kitchens by Greek ladies, and they are simply irresistible! From what I understand Emily you might also be able to cater Greek Foods in the future? We actually do cater now for small parties of up to approximately 40 people. Having a deep knowledge of Greek cuisine and using authentic Greek ingredients in the production we guarantee that all our customers are sure to have a truly unforgettable Greek experience. Make sure you get in and visit Emily and Donald to see their great new business. Little Greece, 6 Wilk Lane, Phone 0800 473 323. Visit online: www.tastegreece.co.nz

Local Gems: Art and Soul

Art and Soul – they'll have the gift for sure! Angela Johnson enjoys the eclectic atmosphere at Art and Soul In early November I was at Art and Soul to interview the owner Marie Williams and as I walked through the doors a beautiful shirt in the window caught my eye – such stunning colours and a great style! Marie was helping a customer find the correct shoe size and Elaine was busy gift-wrapping a lovely little collection of presents – lucky somebody! Taking the time to wander around I was surprised at the large variety of fashion items on display. Clothing (examples being Jetblonde, Lifespace and Vassalli), swimwear, shoes, jewellery, scarves, hand-made slippers, cotton sleepwear and more. In addition to these you can select from white cotton pillowslips, tea-towels, cushions, humorous little anecdote books etc, for your home or some affirmation cards, crystals or room spray to cheer up a friend. There was even a book a car crazy male friend of mine would absolutely love. The assortment truly is too large to write up here – go have a look yourself! Quite a few of the home decor items hanging on the Art and Soul walls are ‘sold on behalf’ of local artists and craft workers. Great to see support for creative locals! Marie says that there is always something new arriving. Weekly deliveries of lovely new products will be a regular occurrence in the lead-up to Christmas so there is always something new to discover. All items are available on Art and Soul’s layby system – where you don’t have to pay for everything at once. Their in-house products range from the Aura room sprays and organic soaps to exclusive men’s T-shirts with Browns Bay, Torbay and East Coast graphics. There are also colourful cushion covers that Marie makes – along with her own jewellery – they all help to

make Art and Soul a truly special place. You'll feel right at home as well. Many of their regulars are known by name as Marie has been retailing for 10 years in Browns Bay, formerly owning Diversity Fashions. She says that it is so nice to see so many previous customers follow her to her new enterprise and the loveliest thing is knowing that when they choose a gift for somebody they love, that the recipient will receive a little bit of joy. The atmosphere in the shop is quite eclectic – which is also their Facebook name www.facebook.com/artandsouleclectics so I guess that’s what they are trying to achieve! Could this be your perfect pit stop? Experiencing Muffin Break for the first time after watching it being built in the new development beside Countdown on Anzac Road, was a very welcoming experience as our team at Browns Bay Magazine went along to see how it looked and discovered that the location itself is not just convenient but comfortable, offering a quick break, snack, breakfast or lunch to its customers. Could this be the perfect pit stop after the shopping or a great meeting place to catch up with friends? "Getting into the Christmas spirit comes naturally to us," says Ata. While we were there Michelle and her team of staff were preparing for their up and coming events. Browns Bay Welcomes: St Pierre's Sushi

St Pierre's Opens in Browns Bay

Choosing Anzac Road as their first North Shore location St Pierre’s has been waiting to open their first store on the North Shore for almost 20 years and in a shot in the arm for The Bays has chosen Anzac Road in Browns Bay as their first location. “It’s the first location that has ticked all of the boxes” says St Pierre’s Marketing Director, Nick Katsoulis. “It’s great to be part of an established yet vibrant local community. It is great to also have lots of parking for our customers. Sushi is very much a convenience based food and letting customers park easily and pick up their lunch or dinner is very important. Our store also has seating for groups, families or couples to enjoy a quick healthy meal." St Pierre’s actually started as a seafood deli in 1984 in Wellington and has now grown to over 43 locations from Queenstown to Silverdale. The majority of stores are in Auckland but it’s amazing that they have waited this long to open one on the North Shore. St Pierre’s pride themselves on the quality of their sushi and their amazing flavours. “It all starts with the best ingredients just like in any cooking,” adds Nick Katsoulis, who also develops menu ideas along with the top St Pierre’s Sushi Chefs. "By importing our own ingredients we can control the quality, ensuring nori (seaweed), wasabi, soy sauce, miso, pickled ginger and all other ingredients are the very best they can be." Local ingredients are also critical to their success. They boast the freshest salmon in New Zealand, which arrives daily from the Marlborough Sounds to all St Pierre’s stores. Their most famous sushi are their double avocado Salmon or Teriyaki Chicken and children love their Teriyaki Chicken on Rice. Recent new initiatives include free-range chicken sushi, brown rice sushi (as an option). If you have never tried sushi before, St Pierre’s is the best place to start. St Pierre’s Browns Bay – Unit 2, 26-28 Anzac Road (the new development next to Countdown). Open 8am to 8pm daily.

Torbay Sailing Club News

Sailing in Memory of Sir Peter Blake Young and the restless at Aria Bay Rest Home Adopt a Grandparent Whilst walking around the local Browns Bay I stumbled upon this event happening at one of our local rest homes called Aria Bay. It was quite a sight, balloons and energy everywhere and a joyful spirited occasion, it was a pleasure to be part of. I have since learnt that there is a unique scheme called Adopt a Grandparent that has been taken on board by the Aria Villages Group. The scheme was devised to fill the gap between the elderly and our young Bhavna from Indulge Fine Foods. and create a positive awareness and relationships that maybe today our society has lost. Can you imagine older generations are in jeopardy of becoming both socially and generationally isolated? Or a younger generation being at risk of not receiving the positive influence that a grandparent or a much older person can bring, helping to shape them into young adults and good citizens. These wise words were written by Jon Amesbury the Manager of Aria Bay's sister facility who implemented this model into his facility in 2013 benefiting both the young and the elderly. The day I witnessed 'Adopt a Grandparent' for the first time there was story telling sessions with both the adopted grandparent and the student. A group of students from Sherwood Primary were meeting with their adopted grandparents and enjoying a lovely session of cupcake decorating, with the ingredients for decorating supplied by Bhavna from the cake shop in Browns Bay – Indulge Fine Foods, 94 Clyde Road, Phone 478 1587. On 6-7th December the Torbay Sailing Club will be hosting what is New Zealand’s largest on the water sailing event, The Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta. This popular regatta has grown in size and status to be not only New Zealand’s largest regular sailing regatta but also an annual local event in its own right. There is little to compare with the scene on Saturday or Sunday morning as over 400 yachts prepare on the beach and reserve areas and leave Waiake beach on-mass and head to sea for a days racing. It is simply a breathtaking sight, which becomes even more interesting and absorbing when you see some of the sailors are tiny boys and girls aged just seven and eight years old, competing for the first time in any regatta. That is part of the magic that makes this event. Locals around Torbay now regularly comment on the transformation of this small and usually tranquil bay into a bustling and vibrant centre of sporting activity with as many 430 yachts and an equally unbelievable 50 plus support craft. Beachside, the event has grown in size to now include the largest marquee the small reserve can accommodate, a separate rigging village area, and on site food sales. The regatta was first sailed in December 2002 to remember the tragic loss of Sir Peter Blake, and with the blessing of Lady Pippa and The Sir Peter Blake Trust this annual regatta is now the premier sailing event celebrating the life of this great New Zealander. This year, there is also a strong historical link with the Volvo Ocean Race stop-over occurring in Auckland in early February. It is 25 years since Sir Peter Blake won what was then called the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in Steinlager 2, the first Kiwi to do this, and setting a record still unbeaten (winning all legs of the race). The link to this is strengthened by two of the Torbay Sailing Club members, both were part of that oridinal Steinlager crew (Mark Orams and Graeme Fluery) and another club member (Rob Salthouse) currently racing in this year’s event. Major sponsor of the Sir Peter Blake Regatta is Volvo Cars New Zealand, not only linking with the Volvo Ocean Race but also actively supporting youth sailing here in Auckland. Other main sponsors include Ian and Dianne Dodds, well known local real estate agents, and their host company Harcourts Cooper and Co, plus Southern Pacific Inflatables, a company associated with another NZ sailing hero Dean Barker. The Sir Peter Blake Torbay Regatta was originally a pure youth regatta, but the competitor range has grown and fleet expanded to now include adult classes. A highlight of the event is the presentation of the Sir Peter Blake Trophy to the sailor who has delivered the most outstanding result across all 17 classes over race weekend. Past (youth) winners include current Olympic sailors, Jo Aleh, Peter Burling, and Sara Winther. All place getters also get a specially commissioned medal featuring Sir Peter at the helm of one of his racing yachts. These quality keepsakes help ensure that even the very young sailors coming through know about Sir Peter Blake - a truly great New Zealander.

Music to my ears

Maureen Ploughman Rest Home listens to The Pearls

I recently had the pleasure of listening to a musical group called The Pearls at Maureen Ploughman Rest Home. The Pearls are a choir/ Jeanette Thomassen and singers. musical group that go around to entertain rest home residents, sharing their love of music. The group all began when the leader and group initiator Barbara Olds bought herself a new digital piano accordion and invited a few friends around for a sing along back in 2000. Over the years the group has grown in spirit of good company and friendships and the odd tea party. Barbara says that as a member of the North Shore Registered Music Teachers group she is fortunate as she is able to appreciate the many talented guest artists. Singing music from the 1940s to the 80s these ladies are an inspiration to our community playing piano, piano accordion, violin, cello, clarinet, flute and of course a feature is their elegant singing.

Mud Rush at Long Bay Primary School Harbour Sport’s Westfield Albany Mud Rush was held at Long Bay Primary School in mid-September. The event featured 1402 people (ages ranged from six to 63) completing a 2.5km muddy obstacle course. Preceding wet weather made the course ideal for the event, with the mud crawls and mud slide proving to be the obstacles with the most impact, with getting covered in mud unavoidable for those participating. “My mum brought up the idea of me getting muddy so I thought yes I’m going to do it, and it was awesome fun” said eight-year-old Stella Higginson from Murrays Bay School. “We think the Mud Rush is a great vehicle to prove that kids don’t have to be wrapped in cotton wool to have a heap of fun. Yes, they are physically tested but they still thoroughly enjoy themselves,” event organiser Renate Smith said. Several organisations helped with the Mud Rush, including the staff and students at the ATC Military Prep school who helped with the construction of the course. Other sponsors included Coffee Club, ANZ Albany, Auckland Council and the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, Placemakers Albany, The Radio Network and Ronald McDonald House, the event’s official charity. The Browns Bay Mag camera was on hand at the event to capture these highlights. 42

For almost 50 years St Cuthbert’s (BBP - Browns Bay Presbyterian, in Anzac Road) has been a spiritual home for members and friends in the communities of Torbay and Browns Bay. Browns Bay Racquets Club

Browns Bay Families open doors to New Caledonian racquet players Browns Bay Racquets Club held its annual four days Masters and Juniors Squash competition last month. Special note at the competition were the 20 master and junior participants who arrived from New Caledonia for the event. The international participants were among a total of over 120 players who competed at all levels to win cash prizes and gifts. The Masters final of the competition was between Mark Foxcroft (Browns Bay) and Alex Collenot (New Caledonia). It was an exciting finish to the competition and an exemplary game of squash, cheered by many young spectators. The game result was a 3-0 win to Mark Foxcroft. In the Juniors section, Rafa Yam took top place, winning 3-0 over Gabe Yam. Families from the racquets club welcomed the international players and offered accommodation to the New Caledonia junior players as part of an international exchange program launched by the Browns Bay club. Earlier in the year, Browns Bay members had reciprocated on last year’s visit, by travelling to New Caledonia, participating in a local tournament and learning more about New Caledonian home-life and culture. “We came here [to Browns Bay Racquets Club] for the third time to continue our exchange between our club and yours. For the young guys, it’s a chance to enjoy New Zealand culture and to play with another level in other countries. They enjoy the variety of life and also feel their progress, playing better than before. I offer my thanks to all who made the tournament work and to families who took our young children in their homes. We have greatly enjoyed the community of Browns Bay.“ said Alex Collenot, Team Captain of Dumbea Club, New Caledonia. The Racquets club has been growing in size and popularity over the past few years. The club has over 550 members and actively provides coaching and competition opportunities in Jeff & Alex. Squash and Tennis to players of

The club offers a range of activities and many social evenings, including Junior match-play, Ladies Evening, Social match-play, Interclub competition and Business House play. The recent competition was strongly supported by local Browns Bay businesses. Spotlight On: Caltex Browns Bay

"Field of dreams” petrol station open in Browns Bay Vision recognised with new Caltex service station on Beach Road There has been a petrol station at the bottom of the big hill on Beach Road, Browns Bay for as long as most of us can remember. It was always pretty pokey and small as far as petrol stations go, but it ticked the box for an urgent fuel top-up, a last minute bottle of milk or filling your LPG bottle. In recent years it was starting to look pretty tired, so it was fair to say that a lot of people passed it by. About three years ago, the Caltex service station business was bought by a group of three local lads who run a network of fuel sites, convenience stores and food outlets around the North Island, under the banner of Number 8 Retail Group. Brothers Nic and Ben Paterson, with good friend Jonno Buckley all grew up in the Bays and still live nearby with their young families. As locals to Caltex Browns Bay themselves, the guys had the vision to see what the Bays market needed from that location, so when the time was right, they purchased the land and buildings from the landlord and set about planning a “field of dreams” kind of petrol station. As that Kevin Costner movie says, “build it and they will come”! So from February to July this year, Caltex Browns Bay closed down, as the entire site was leveled and completely reworked. The multi-million dollar redevelopment project has delivered a vastly improved community facility, including: A spacious, high canopy, 8-lane forecourt, with all fuels available at any pump (welcome back the boats and big trucks!). They even added generator back-up, to pump fuel in event of natural disasters. New Zealand’s most state-of-the-art carwash, where the customer can choose Touchfree or Softwash options, or any combination in between. The finished facility is truly amazing! A purpose-built, concrete tilt-slab building with LED energy efficient lighting inside and out. A common need for families on the go is a safe and clean bathroom, so they have built some of the most immaculate and modern servo toilets in the country, with touchfree taps, soap dispensers and Dyson blade hand-dryers. A bright new shop fit out under the name of FIX – a convenience store brand created by the owners, which is now being rolled out across the national Caltex dealer network. 44

www.brownsbay.org.nz

Inside the spacious, new shop you can get fresh barista coffee and a large selection of tasty food including the widely renowned Jesters Pies (even in take-home freezer packs!). The Bay of Islands-sourced fresh fruit and vege stand is also proving a real hit with many customers A huge LED price sign on the roadside, lets you know the great value fuel pricing that Caltex consistently delivers each day, for its quality fuels containing Techron. Just like in the good old days, you can still fill up your LPG bottle; get bait and ice, or any other c-store treat or necessity inside the shop. Something that locals or business owners may not know, is how using the (free to own) AA Smartfuel Card at Caltex means even further everyday fuel savings, with a minimum of six cents per litre discount on any fill of $40 or more. Talk to the friendly staff about how it works, and any terms and conditions. Remember it is free to join the programme and the discount comes off the published price you see on the roadside. Nic, Ben and Jonno invite you to pop in to Caltex Browns Bay to sample the service and awesome new facilities. They hope it will tick all the boxes as your new favourite local fuel, food, coffee and convenience stop. To find out more about the offers available in store, or to give them any feedback or suggestions, you can email them at “enquiries@number8rg.co.nz”. Caltex Browns Bay – 731 Beach Road, Browns Bay.
