Piatti Italiani: Italian Cuisine

A little bit of Italy Revolutionising nestled within Waiake the kitchen market “One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.” - Luciano Pavarotti.

Piatti Italiani, which translates as 'Italian Dishes' is a family run business, operated by the father and son team of Alfio and Giancarlo. Piatti Italiani offers authentic Italian cuisine with gluten free and vegetarian options available. Along with Piatti Italiani’s classic pasta dishes some of the more popular dishes are; Bistecca Rosmarino - eye fillet wrapped in bacon brushed with a rosemary chilli infused oil and drizzled with balsamic glaze. Dessert favourites include Limoncello Cheesecake and Alfio’s renowned Tiramisu ai bicchiere – both made in-house. Fully licenced, Piatti Italiani has a small but suited selection of Italian and local wines. Giancarlo takes pride in looking after his patrons be it serving a beer, wine, cocktails or specialty coffees. Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager

Never a better time to Shop Local! In the press recently the chief economist of the Auckland Council quoted some figures about how well Auckland is going and painted quite a rosy picture. Only problem was he was talking about the period up to the end of December last year. Since then, there has been a marked decrease in spending across Auckland Murray Hill with the average increase for the 3 months to 31 March 2017 only 2.1%. Your local Town Centre is slightly under that figure but still has a small amount of growth. The CBD has been most affected with all the tunneling for the new rail network and this has had a significant impact on total Auckland results. The other factor that often leads to a tightening up of spending, is a general election, which of course is only months away. It’s times like these when we really appreciate you shopping locally in Browns Bay. We may not have all the big name brands but we do have hard-working local business owners – mostly owner-operators – who understand and can cater for your needs. And we are continually seeing new businesses moving into the business district and adding to the mix. Shoe Talk is a classic example and a welcome addition to our fashion sector. There have been new restaurants open in the last few months after extensive refurbishments and a major building project is progressing for 21 Days. But Browns Bay is also about personalities. Gerhard has been at Augenstein’s Jewelers for it seems, a lifetime. Craig and Kim are well known at SBA Accounting and we have Paper Plus reinvesting in Browns Bay with their brand new store now open. Gary Christini, our local New World Owner-Operator brought us a brand new shopping experience when his new store opened a couple of years ago and Countdown, not to be out done, did a massive refurbishment of their supermarket to give us two of the most up-to-date supermarket shopping experiences in New Zealand. Danie and Brendan have baked their way into our lives with their fabulous cupcakes at Gabby’s Cupackes (part of the South African Shop) and in the same street we have Soulshine Café – one of the best cafés on the Shore. In the commercial area there are well known names like Greg who is well known at G.P. Autos and Grant Hyde, owner-operator of Bays Car Painters. Chris Grove, who’s in charge at our local Mitre 10, is part of the Grove family who run a number of Mitre 10’s and rounds out just some of the personalities who contribute to our fantastic business district of over 317 businesses here to serve you LOCALLY. So forget the traffic congestion at a nearby mega centre – save time and support your local business community. They support you!

You’ll find a comprehensive list of all our businesses and their websites on our website directory: www.brownsbay.org.nz/directory/

Dumping of Rubbish in Town Centre

Erica and I are on the trail of the mystery people who dump rubbish in and around the town centre. At the end of last year we did a major cleanup in the hope that it would rectify the problem and filled a 3-tonne truck and 2 trailers with rubbish found around the centre. However, these pictures show evidence that it’s creeping back into the centre. Rubbish is once again being dumped beside bins, paid for by local businesses, by people expecting it to miraculously disappear and no longer be their problem. This has got to STOP! If you have any information on who may be doing this illegal dumping please let me know. And if you’re reading this article and it’s your rubbish, don’t be surprised if you find it dumped back in your front yard. I’m very experienced in donning gloves and going through rubbish to find clues to its owners and have a 100% record so far this year!

AB Hair & Make Up

Amanda owns our biggest owneroperated hair & make up business in Browns Bay and embodies what our local business people are all about. She along with husband, Andrew (AB Electrical) contribute to both business association promotions and local sports and community group’s events and lives in the area. You can’t get better than that! In recent years Vietnamese food has become more and more popular all over the world. One of New Zealand’s largest chain Vietnamese Restaurants, Hansan, is now open in Browns Bay. Vermicelli, noodles, rice, fresh vegetables and herbs all play big roles in Vietnamese food, making it one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. The Chin family opened the first Hansan Vietnamese restaurant in Mt Wellington in 1999, 18 years ago. Aucklander’s loved it and as it became more and more popular the family decided to open up more restaurants, so Hansan became a well known chain of Vietnamese restaurants in the country. Now people of the Bays can sample the delicious Hansan Vietnamese food at the newest restaurant right here in Clyde Road, Browns Bay. Loyal customers love Hansan, here is some feedback: "Have been here lots of times, the food is fresh and filling and usually quite fast (sometimes extremely fast). Also the prices are really good value. This is a very nice place to go and catch up with friends…"

"I eat at Hansan at least twice a month… It does not take long if you are stressed to start feeling calm... as soon as you are seated a jasmine tea arrives... orders are taken fast and it only takes 5-8 minutes to arrive…" "If you are after good value, good tasting Vietnamese food in good surroundings then I recommend Hansan in Newmarket. My sister and I were looking specifically for a cheap eat and this place was recommended by a colleague. The menu is extensive…" Hansan Vietnamese Cuisine – Open seven days a week at: Level 1, 55 Clyde Road, Browns Bay. Phone 476 3383 or visit: www.hansan.co.nz

Shoe Talk: Browns Bay

Shoe Talk’s tips on how to fit shoes • Try both shoes on. 99% of people do have one foot larger than the other. Also, have you ever tried on a high heel when you had a sneaker on the other foot and then done the "bob-hop" around the shop? • Buy the shoes that fit your larger foot. You can always make a shoe fit better with heel grips and insoles. • There needs to be room for your toes, they should not feel cramped. In sports shoes you should be able to wiggle them up and down and side to side. • Try to select footwear that is shaped like your foot. If you have bunions, select footwear that has a nice supple or soft leather upper, so that it will stretch over this area. • Your heel should fit comfortably in the shoe with a minimum amount of slipping. The shoes should not ride up and down excessively on your heel when you walk. • Buy shoes with padded insoles and good out soles. These take the impact away from your joints. • Your foot bed should not be wider than the shoe, there should be no spill out, spill over, or ballet flats that do not cover the tops of your feet at all.

They also offer a full breakfast and lunch menu that boasts a variety of delicious meals straight from the kitchen...

• If you are selecting footwear and the ones you "love" don't fit correctly and the ones you "like" do, buy the ones you "like" your feet will "love" you forever!

Why not keep your little ones entertained in their kids area while you take a well-deserved break with a freshly brewed coffee and satisfying meal.

Bath Boutique: Browns Bay

The Life Coach: Momentum Life Coaching & Training

Who and What Drains You?

Vivienne Kelly. Let’s think of life through the analogy of a bath, for a moment. Some people and things in our lives are the taps; topping us up, replenishing with fresh warm water. Others are the plughole; draining away the water levels. How full is your bath right now and what can you do about it? Let’s explore it together. Starting with the ‘what’s working’ first: Who and what tops you up? If it’s a person, when last did you thank them, acknowledge their importance in your life? We all like to be appreciated. Maybe they don’t even know how much they mean to you. If it’s an activity / ritual / nature, how much are you prioritising being replenished? You are pretty useless to everyone if your bath is empty. Now let’s look at the trickier bit: There will always be the plughole… people who suck your energy, a job you dislike, chores, bills blah blah. There are a few interesting thoughts here: • Where are you giving more time and emotional energy than is actually necessary? • What can you give up? • It doesn’t have to be the same person who gives and takes equally. Some people we give more to, others we receive more – swings and roundabouts. • Sometimes a person or situation is depleting and that’s just the fact of it! How can you intentionally balance that energy by being around someone or something that regenerates you? • When it is unavoidable to be in a situation that you’d prefer not to be, practice the attitude of gratitude: ‘Luckily I’m healthy enough to help this person / This job pays my bills while I’m looking for one I prefer / I’m so grateful I have this home to clean / I will miss this person when she passes – I’ll treasure each moment while I can / Boy, my bed is going to feel great after today / Wow, clearly I’m stronger than I thought I was’… • Remember IF no water drained out of your bath ever, it would get stagnant and stinky… life is about the flow of give and take. ONE LAST QUESTION: ARE YOU TYPICALLY THE TAP OR THE PLUGHOLE?

If we, at Momentum Life Coaching & Training, can assist you with any area of your personal or professional life, please contact us: www.coachmomentum.co.nz

Kokedama -

New Trend, Ancient Art Popping up all around the place, and certainly a popular item in the Boutique have been Kokedama! You can get tutorials on how to make them on YouTube and plant centres all around New Zealand. They are at markets and gift shops around New Zealand…. but what are they exactly? At Bath Boutique we have our Kokedama supplied by a lovely family operation in Tauranga called Pickled Whimsy and we love their passion for plants and commitment to the art. Here are a few things you might want to know if you want to give or receive a lovely Kokedama. Kokedama is the art of binding a plant's roots to Images show a newly eventually create its own eco culture. wrapped kokedama the beginning of Eventually the binding material, usually jute string, and the deterioration of the binding material. will deteriorate - this is the awkward “teenage” stage of the Kokedama and will eventually pass - don’t worry, it’s part of the process! Each plant will have it’s own care regime, with the obvious differences being watering for ‘juicy' plants, like a begonia for instance, which requires a constant moist environment, to a succulent, or an epiphyte, which requires little to no watering. Air circulation is important to avoid mould developing, and you can hang a Kokedama (and then the proper term for your plant is called Tsurigoke). This is a wonderful way to display the plant, allow air circulation and make it easily accessible for regular misting of the outside of the ball, which helps promote the growth of the moss - and leading to the mature stage of your Kokedama. After several years, and with the appropriate care, your Kokedama will have fully developed the lovely verdant green moss ball, the end goal in the creation of your plant, from early stages through to it’s own unique eco culture. These beautiful globes are a wonderful miniature garden that will delight for years to come. So, although this seems to be a 'new decor trend' it is actually both trendy, and ancient, and truly rewarding! Giving a living gift is a wonderful expression of care, and choosing a plant to suit the recipient is always fun as well - there are Kokedama to suit every gardening style - from the attentive gardener to the neglectful wet and forget style gardener! (that’s ME by the way!) Information and images used with permission, and with gratitude to Pickled Whimsy. Come in and see our selection or just see how they look at Bath Boutique.

A new chapter for AgePlus 89 Clyde Road Browns Bay

AgePlus was started 5 years ago by Tanja and Bjorn Binzegger. Tanja and Bjorn worked to support the Browns Bay Senior Community by providing a range of services and equipment to enhance positive aging. In 2016 the opportunity came for the Binzeggers' to return home to Switzerland. Tanja approached the Independent Living Service Charitable Trust (ILS) to become the new owner of AgePlus. This was a natural fit. ILS is a trusted community owned, not for profit organisation with the same philosophical underpinning as AgePlus and has been serving Aucklanders for 36 years. ILS is committed to continuing to support the Browns Bay and North Shore Communties through its long-standing networks. The ILS head office is located at 14 Erson Ave, Royal Oak (formerly Disability Resource Centre Auckland). The Royal Oak location houses a large home mobility and equipment store along with fully accessible conference facilities. It is the hub for the ILS Mobile Information and Equipment Service which takes information into a wide variety of Auckland's communities through tailored presentations to community groups, retirement villages, social and disability support groups. This service also runs an in-home demonstration service to assist people with selecting the right scooter or power chair that best suits their needs and home environment. ILS holds contracts with the Ministry of Health to provide disability information and advice, a free service for Aucklanders from Franklin to Rodney. They have a range of specialist Information Consultants who can connect and direct you to the right services, funding streams and solutions for all ages including seniors, health & community services. Included in this team is a specialist Asian

Information team speaking Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean. In addition to the AgePlus team living in Browns Bay so too do two of the Asian Information team. Some customers will already have met Felix Lin who has been working in-store at AgePlus (Felix speaks Cantonese). Marian Park, a resident in Browns Bay, is the ILS Korean Information Consultant. The ILS specialist Access and Advisory team have also been involved in the Browns Bay community. Julianne McEldowney worked with the Browns Bay local board in 2015 to complete an assessment to improve accessibility for all people in and around the Browns Bay shopping precinct. In addition to this work, the team offers Barrier Free Audits and Be. Welcome Assessments throughout New Zealand. Some of their well-known projects include the accessibility of Auckland Airport, the Zoo, AUT, the Museum, the Art Galleries. In October 2014, ILS opened its second home mobility and equipment store in Botany South (308 Te Irirangi Drive) and now the addition of AgePlus as a third store for North Shore customers. All the ILS stores offer a wide range of equipment and aids to make daily living easier. You can hire a range of mobility equipment including wheelchairs, walkers, knee scooters, mobility scooter and crutches. You can shop online at www.ilsnz.org If you'd like a community presentation or in-home scooter demonstration call Dee Kemp-Towns, the Mobile Service Manager directly on 09 625 0319. My Dog & Me: with Sarah Cross

Lewis & Sarah! In association with our good friends at DogHQ each month we meet Shore people whose four-legged family members add a great deal of joy to their lives. Our very own dog-lover Aidan Bennett (he has two doggies of his own he spoils – Olive a cocker spaniel and Maisie a French bulldog) has been given the task of putting this feature together on a monthly basis in 2017. This month he talks with Sarah Cross about Lewis her Staffy cross. AIDAN BENNETT: How long has Lewis been part of your life? SARAH CROSS: Lewis has been a much loved member of our family for four years. AB: What made you decide to get a this breed? SC: We were looking to adopt an SPCA dog and weren’t fussy on the breed. We decided a larger dog would be best for our family as we had both had great experience with bigger dogs growing up and knew the love they would contribute to our family. He was the first dog we looked at and we both fell completely in love straight away. AB: Is he your first dog? If not tell us about your other dogs? SC: My partner and I have been together for nine years and he is the first pet we have had together. We both had family dogs growing up. Between us we have been a part of families with labradors, rottweilers, King Charles cavaliers and a maltese – a very big range in sizes! AB: Do you have any other pets? SC: No other pets. AB: What do you love about Lewis? SC: His beautifully sweet nature, his patient and caring way with children, and his love of cuddles from anyone and everyone. He is very social dog and a people pleaser. We also love his excited side smile he does when he sees you after a day at school (Dog HQ). AB: Does he have any bad habits? SC: He has a very particular morning routine. This isn’t a bad thing. However a major part of this routine involves at least ten minutes of cuddle time regardless of what you have going. He makes his way onto the bed and forces you to cuddle him before you can leave. AB: What are his favourite things to do? SC: His three favourite things are cuddling with anyone who will

Lewis and Sarah Cross.

give him some love, going to ‘school’ (Dog HQ) and playing with his besties; namely his girlfriend Angel the husky and his brother Drama the bulldog (who comes around for playdates every now and then), and going out for ‘sniffs’ (walks) and finding the biggest stick he can possibly carry. AB: How long has he been going to DogHQ and does he love it? SC: Lew has been going to Dog HQ since he was a puppy and can’t get enough of it. He went to Glenfield for the first three years, then moved to Albany when we moved house recently. AB: Does he love the beach and swimming? SC: He loves the beach because of all of the different smells and things to pee on. He is however terrified of water. He isn’t a risk taker in the slightest and doesn’t quite know what to make of the ocean. AB: Any words of wisdom for other dog owners or prospective dog owners? SC: Make sure you are going to have time for your new family member as you would any other. But if you are ready - take the plunge! Adopting Lewis was the best decision of our lives!

Sustainability has been an important consideration, and Long Bay’s planners have included a number of sustainability features including all properties housing rainwater tanks designed to reuse rainwater in laundries, toilets, and gardens, ‘rain gardens’ using plants and soil to naturally filter out pollutants to return clean water to local streams and forming a natural habitat for native plants and wildlife. The largest community park is currently under construction adjacent to the Long Bay café. This includes a range of facilities including a fenced toddlers' play area and the park is on target for opening later this year. Real Estate: with Angela Johnson

Is the Auckland housing market becoming a buyers market this winter? The Auckland housing market seems to be holding stable, as houses turn into different coloured lollipops on a shelf. Many buyers are shopping around a lot more. They have become market savvy and are weighing up many options, taking their time and considering what property they should buy or invest in. The answer to this change in the market and the fall of some sales at Auctions lately is now becoming clear. For the first time in many years the number of properties to purchase in Auckland has increased. According to the REINZ Press release April 2017: The number of properties for sale in the Auckland region has increased by 2,468 (+39%). Compared to the number of properties available for sale in New Zealand that continue to decline nationwide. In my opinion, this may be welcoming news for many Aucklanders who own a home. They simply do not have to rush out to sell their property or need to worry about missing out on price. The “bubble” or over-inflated market predicted to burst did not happen. It seems that it was always natural growth and simply supply and demand of properties in and around Auckland with our existing population and growing migration. According to a Newshub article dated June 2017 the annual net migration rose to 71,305 in the 12 months ended January 31, eclipsing the record 70,600 set in calendar 2016 (data from Statistics New Zealand). People arriving as permanent and long-term migrants outnumbered those departing by 128,290 to 56,985 in the latest 12 months – also an all-time high. The question is… has the Auckland market peakedyet or will the market climb again this coming summer? Houses are sitting longerfor sale on the market. This could be due to a seasonal change and more properties available

to buy and tighter lending restrictions from the banks. The number of days to sell in the month of April was steady at 35 days. This is up by three days when compared to April 2016. As we head into winter months we are seeing a seasonal adjustment with regards to the price achieved. The question is, will it continue to fall this winter? The last months of sales indicate a slight seasonal fall with Auckland’s monthon-month median house price down 5.6%! From $905,000.00 in March to $854,000.00 inApril. Thinking of selling? Make sure yourhome is sold well under the hammer – choose Ray White! Ray White is having great results in selling houses on the North Shore by Auction. With an Auction clearance rate up to 70% sold under the hammer this year by Ray White – vendors are truly pleased with the results. If you are thinking of selling you should get in contact! BAYS PEOPLE: Peter White

PETER WHITE

– On tour with the Lions Long time Browns Bay resident and former Beachside Gym owner Peter White is playing a part in the British & Irish Lions Tour that’s currently taking place around the country, with three matches being held here in Auckland. For many years Peter has performed tour liaison duties when international rugby teams come to New Zealand. This involves being the link between the local organisations and the rugby teams coming to the country. The role with the Lions is a big one. Aidan Bennett put these questions to Peter in late May, just as the British & Irish Lions squad was landing in the country for the first match which was played in Whangarei. AIDAN BENNETT: Peter, how long have you been working on this British and Irish Lions tour? PETER WHITE: We have had four pre-tour recce’s over the last two years in preparation for this tour but work has ramped up considerably over the last four months. AB: You've done quite a few tours with overseas teams previously haven’t you? PW: I have been extremely lucky to have worked with touring teams each year since 1999, including the last British & Irish Lions tour in 2005. I have also been on tours involving England, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, Argentina, Manu Samoa and Ireland – including their 2011 Rugby World Cup Campaign. AB: There’s quite a big squad I understand? PW: 41 players and 35 management. We will also be joined by some of the Lions Board during the Test series. AB: You and Jayne went over for the launch of the tour in the UK, where was that held? PW: The squad announcement was held at the historic Syon Park in London and was a very special experience. Captain Sam Warbuton was the only player in attendance with the rest of the squad learning of their selection on live television and via Lions digital media. It was also a chance for me to catch up with management to run through logistics for the tour. AB: Do you barrack for the Lions when you are at games, or quietly barrack for the AB’s? PW: I have worked with many of the management and players over previous tours and have developed strong friendships with them. As such I 100% support the Lions and am hoping for a historic series victory. AB: What do you see as the biggest challenges of the tour for the Head Liaison Officer? PW: Planning for any tour has to be flexible with changes being able to be made at short notice. As such I need to call upon many favours from people to accommodate. Luckily most in New Zealand are extremely passionate rugby followers and are very willing to assist. AB: It must be a lot of fun as well though? Or just hard work? PW: We work long days and nights, however there is no better job in world rugby. Touring your own country with an overseas team is extremely special. I’ve been fortunate to sit on the reserves bench during test matches, stand behind the squad whilst facing the All Black Haka, be a fly on the wall in the changing rooms, but the best of all is making and enjoying life-long friendships. AB: What do you see as the big challenges for the Lions on the tour – on or off the field? PW: The schedule is extremely difficult and involves a considerable

Peter White (left) with 2017 British & Irish Lions tour manager John Spencer at QBE Stadium.

amount of travel which impacts on team preparation. We play 10 games over five weeks and have 13 separate travel movements (returning to Auckland on three occasions). There are no easy games with three Tests, games against each of the Super Rugby franchises, the Maori All Blacks and NZ Provincial Barbarians. AB: There is going to be a big British & Irish Lions Lunch on the tour as well isn’t there that you are involved in? Tell us about that. PW: Yes, my other job away from rugby is working with the North Harbour Club, a wonderful community organisation on the Shore who support youth through the annual AIMES Awards. The British & Irish Lions (and one of their great sponsors QBE) have agreed to get behind a lunch being held at QBE Stadium on Friday June 23rd, the day before the first test against the All Blacks in Auckland. It will be a great lunch that will include a range of rugby people, with the lead speaker being John Spencer who is the manager of the Lions on this tour and a famous player from the 1971 tour. I believe the lunch is pretty much a sell-out but a few tickets may still be available. NOTE: At the time of going to press over 350 people had booked for this lunch. Seats are still available at only $150 per person. If you would like to attend, contact Christie Parkin, email: christie@northharbourclub.co.nz or Phone 021 277 0699. AB: Do you have a favourite all time British or Irish player? PW: No. It is a pleasure and privilege to work with them all. However, it is particularly enjoyable to catch up with players I have worked with on previous tours. I have toured with the Irish more than any other team and have spent in all up to six months with some of their most capped players which has been a great honour. AB: Complete the following… after the tour is over I am going to… PW: Move into camp with the QBE North Harbour Mitre 10 Cup side as we prepare for this year’s campaign. TOUR ITINERARY – 2017 British and Irish Lions in New Zealand Saturday 3rd June 2017, versus New Zealand Provincial Barbarians, Whangarei Wednesday 7th June 2017, versus Blues, Eden Park Auckland Saturday 10th June 2017, versus Crusaders, AMI Stadium Christchurch Tuesday 13th June 2017, versus Highlanders, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin Saturday 17th June 2017, versus Maori All Blacks, Rotorua International Stadium Tuesday 20th June 2017, versus Chiefs, FMG Stadium Waikato, Hamilton 1ST TEST: Saturday 24th June 2017, versus All Blacks, Eden Park Auckland Tuesday 27th June 2017, versus Hurricanes, Westpac Stadium Wellington 2ND TEST: Saturday 1st July 2017, versus All Blacks, Westpac Stadium Wellington 3RD TEST: Saturday 8th July 2017, versus All Blacks, Eden Park Auckland.

Why the Delay?

We are all aware that the market has changed dramatically since the preceding 2 years. Some properties are reaching a market price but not near the reserve set by the vendor and being passed in at auction. Amazingly, within a day or even within minutes of the auction there are multiple offers presented – why is that? Firstly, the price expectation of vendors is still on the rise, despite the median selling price being lower than the peak. It is important for them to listen and respond to customer feedback from open homes. Secondly, banks have introduced restrictions and conditions that force customers to place offers that are conditional. Thirdly, the rental yield is much lower, as the price of property has increased much faster than the increase in rent, thus widening the gap. Wood Craft Outdoor exhibition until 18 June! The Wood Craft Festival encouraged both emerging and established artists to step out of their comfort zones, to create a work ‘on the fly’, on site within Lake House grounds and within a strict time period. Despite the rain our artists have produced some wonderful works which will be on display in the Lake House grounds until 18 June. The sculptures are for sale and any unsold works will be auctioned at the end of the exhibition. Many thanks to the event sponsors the Chartwell Trust, The Becroft Foundation and the Devonport Takapuna Local Board. Also showing in June at Lake House Arts is The Collodian Collective. Wet plate collodion is one of photography’s earliest processes, flourishing for few decades in the mid-19th century. Requiring the creation and development of large format glass or

metal photographic plates “on-site”, its temperamental chemistry, fine grain and beautiful image quality is again being rediscovered by this small band of kiwi photographers. For the first time, we are putting on a group show of our work showing a range of tintypes, black glass ambrotypes and large format prints. 31st May – 25 June 2017 Artists include: Paul Alsop, Michael Bradley, Raewyn Dunn, Jane Fletcher, Su Hendeles, Brian Scadden, Martin Sowter, Ann Marie Hope-Cross, Brian Scadden, Megan Dickson Lake House Arts is easy access, straight off the motorway at Esmonde Rd onto Fred Thomas Dr, Takapuna. Feature: Erica Stanford: MurraysNational Bay Birdman Party Candidate Festival for East Coast Bays

Erica Stanford: your National Party candidate for East Coast Bays Hi! I am Erica Stanford, your National Party candidate for East Coast Bays and Chair of the Browns Bay Business Association. I am proudly born and bred in the East Coast Bays and am now raising my two children here. As I move around our community, one concern that has been raised by local residents is the current state of parking in Browns Bay. The increase in patronage of local businesses in Browns Bay is fantastic for the local economy. However, alongside this, there is the serious issue of insufficient parking which is worrying many. This is due in part to the increase in population and the ever-increasing popularity of our beach and local businesses. The serious lack of parks has forced some businesses to clamp or tow cars away, which has, unsurprisingly, raised the hackles of many who have been very vocal on social media. Previous parking areas have become out of bounds, leaving many older people confused and Anzac Road anxious about coming to Browns Bay. Despite all this, the car park on Anzac Road between New World and Whitcoulls has recently been designated as surplus to requirements by Auckland Transport and earmarked for sale. Not only is it surprising that any car parks in Browns Bay are surplus to requirements, the car parks on Anzac Road were originally provided to businesses by the Council via cash-in-lieu payments to provide parking for their customers. The ability of Auckland Transport to now dispose of the land is therefore questionable. Many people have expressed their concern to me over

this issue. In collaboration with the Browns Bay Business Association and the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, I am investigating both whether this land can, in fact, be sold, as well as questioning the methods that Auckland Transport have used to decide that these car parks were not required. erica.stanford@national.org.nz www.facebook.com/EricaStanfordECB www.instagram.com/ericastanfordecb

Real Estate News with Lily Zhang, Barfoot & Thompson

Falling Auckland house sales numbers have limited impact on prices Auckland property sales numbers fell to their lowest level in an April since the 2008 global financial crisis last month, but lower turnover had a limited impact on sales values. "Sales numbers in April were down by about a third compared with the average for the previous three months, yet given this significant fall the average and median prices held steady," said Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson. "The median sales price at $850,000 for the month was down only $5,500 on the average median price for the previous three months. "The same trend was there around the average price, which at $917,079 was down only $25,000 on the average for the previous three months. "While prices have declined from March's all-time record highs, the fall relative to the average for the first quarter of this year is modest, and on a year-on-year basis the median price is up 3.7 percent and the average price is up 5 percent. "It is a changed market from what we have been experiencing for a number of years and you have to go back nine years to find an April in which fewer homes were sold. "Buyers are being far more selective, are taking their time over committing and are only prepared to pay the market price. "Vendors are not lowering their price expectations significantly but are accepting that to achieve an above market sales price in the current climate their house has to be special. "New listings in April were excellent at 1292, and combined with

lower sales this allowed stock numbers and buyer choice to remain high. "At month end we had 4214 listings on our books, close to what it has been at month end each month this year, but 48.1 percent higher than it was at the same time last year. "The decline in sales numbers was felt evenly across all price ranges, with more than a third of all sales being for more than $1 million. "Sales of property under $500,000 accounted for 6 percent of all sales.

IFeature: Love What Murrays I Do:Bay Abby Birdman SoaresFestival

Abby's healthy food revolution! Abby Soares lives in Torbay and we hear that she is somewhat of a local legend. We have heard she is young, cool and passionate about trying to start a healthy food revolution for kids and families. Abby runs a nutrition business working in her Torbay Clinic ‘Nourish’ and at 'The Connection' Health Centre in Silverdale. She shares advice and recipes with her thousands of followers online. She obviously loves what she does. So Channel’s Aidan Bennett asked her to provide some kids lunch ideas or other delicious recipes for our readers. She loves encouraging others to eat healthy. AIDAN BENNETT: How did you get so passionate about nutrition? ABBY SOARES: My Mum Linda became really passionate about growing organic food and using food to improve health when I was a teenager. I have definitely been hugely influenced and inspired by Mum and her passion for nourishing food. She works with me in our nutrition practice. Her knowledge is amazing. Becoming a Mum myself was also a hugely pivotal point for me. I have three boys who are 11, 9 and 6 years old. Like all parents I just want them to be happy and healthy.I was and still am a registered nurse before retraining in Nutrition. I love helping people get well, it is so rewarding. AB: When did you get serious enough about it to set up your online material? AS: I started my Facebook page when I decided to open my own nutrition practise three years ago. The response from the community has been amazing. I think people are really starting to want answers around their health now; they are hungry for knowledge and so appreciate having it explained in simple terms. I share my professional knowledge but also just my normal mum life and how I get my boys to eat what they do, the food we eat as a family and how I manage to stay on track with food whist juggling work, kids, after school activities! People just need simple tips. Everyone wants to be healthy; it can just seem so overwhelming at times with our busy lives.

24

www.brownsbay.org.nz

AB: So what does your business involve? AS: I specialise in digestive health, hormone balance, low immunity and fatigue. I provide a really supportive service, helping my clients make achievable and sustainable changes, teaching them how their bodies work so they can stay healthy long term. We make food and lifestyle changes that fit into family life and look at the family as a whole. I love helping people reclaim their health. It’s such an amazing job. AB: Tell us about the work you are doing at the local schools with parents and kids? AS: I have run Nutrition and Health Coaching programs for the teachers in some local schools and have done several in school talks to the kids. I love teaching kids about "the army in their body", their immune system and what their army needs to be strong and healthy. It’s so important that kids learn that nourishing foods from nature make their army stronger and that processed foods damage their army and weaken their immune system. When we understand what food does to our bodies we are so much more committed to eating well. AB: Any innovative ideas you have to get youngsters to eat healthy food? AS: Teaching your child to eat well is like teaching them to sleep, its takes many many hours and lots of hard work but it is so so very worth it for their health, learning and behaviour. Often the reason little ones don't want to sit and eat is because they are bored or tired. Reading to your kids at meal times is the best trick ever. It keeps them entertained and calm. Especially at dinner time when they're too tired to eat well, popping them on your lap, giving them a cuddle, reading them a story and helping them eat their food is such a lovely way to connect with your little one, whilst filling up their tummies. AB: Any special advice for parents? AS: What we feed our babies and children is one of the biggest

Browns Bay Family Doctors

gifts we can give them in terms of their overall health and wellbeing. Avoiding processed food and eating wholefoods from nature is essential to building a strong immune system. 85% of our immune system (the one that protects us from bacteria, viruses and food intolerances) is housed in our mucous membranes as good bacteria. Lets think of these good bacteria as the army in our body that protects us. This army beats up any baddies that try to invade our bodies to make us sick. Our army loves greens and veggies. This is their food source. Processed foods (sugar, refined grains, preservatives and colours) kill our goodies, allowing the baddies to get in and make us sick. Encourage your little one to understand the relationship between a strong immune system and greens. Aim to have veggies and greens at every meal of the day. AB: Why do you love what you do? AS: I love empowering others with knowledge to keep themselves well long term. I love seeing their health transform when their body has the right nutrients to heal itself. Is such a privalige to spend time with so many special people and be with them on their journey to health. My job also fits in so well with my family, I can still be the mum I want to be as well as have a rewarding career, I'm so lucky to have that balance. AB: Can you share a couple of your special healthy recipes with that Channel readers can try on their kids? AS: Smoothies are such a great way of getting loads of wonderful nutrients into kids and teenagers of all ages. All you need is a good smoothie maker, some fruit, greens such as kale, spinach or lettuce and water and you are ready to go. For more information on Abby Soares nutritional tips, visit: https://www.facebook.com/nourishhealthandnutrition or blog https://nourishholistichealth.wordpress.com

SMOOTHIE 1: Incredible Hulk This is such a great Smoothie that my kids are loving at the moment. 4 feijoas 1 lemon peeled and quartered 2 bananas 2 handfuls of kale 4 dates 2 tablespoons of chia seeds 750mls of water blend and serve with a straw This smoothie is really great for immunity and energy. Kids drink smoothies so well with a straw so try to get yourself a nice stainless steel one.

SMOOTHIE 2: Choco Banana Berry Blast 2 bananas 1 cup of berries frozen berries 1/4 cup of cashews or 2 tablespoons of chia seeds if nut intolerant 1-2 handfuls of spinach, kale or lettuce 1 -2 tablespoons of cocoa powder 1 teaspoon of honey 750 mL of water Blend and serve This smoothie is great for chocolate lovers. You can up the honey initially to get your kids to drink it and slowly wean that out. It’s a great afternoon tea smoothie to have on the way to sports training. It’s also perfect to have instead of coffee for tired mamas too!

Service Profile: Driving Miss Daisy

Frequently Asked Questions How Does Driving Miss Daisy Work? We are similar to a taxi, but we must be pre-booked - preferably a day or 2 before. We will fit in last minute bookings if we have a car and driver available. We can help you to the correct ward in a hospital, or to check in at the airport, or even assist to get your groceries. What is the cost? We are generally cheaper than a taxi; however, we have a minimum charge of $15.00. We provide quotes for trips to hospitals, the airport and any other destination. Do you accept Total Mobility ID Cards? Yes, we do. Does it cost more if there are two people? No, you are booking a car - not a seat. We do charge more to pick-up at different addresses. Can I take my walker? Sure you can! Our cars can all fit a walker in the boot without folding it down. Can you take wheelchairs? Yes. If you can transfer to a car seat, we can fold the wheelchair into the boot and assist you in and out of our car. We also have a wheelchair accessible vehicle to enable transport of a person staying seated in the wheelchair. Be sure to book it in advance as we only have one car available on the North Shore. Do you take Pets? Yes. Cats travel in a cage and clean dogs can travel in the boot space. Guide dogs are always welcome. Who can use Driving Miss Daisy? EVERYONE, men, women, kids: young and old. Anyone who does not drive can use our service. If you can still drive we can take you to the airport, theatre, hospital or

optometrist appointments when it is recommended that you do not drive home after your appointment. What are your hours? We mostly operate between 7am and 6pm; we are available outside of these hours if it is booked in advance. We operate 7 days a week although weekends we operate with only 1 or 2 cars. We do early morning and late night airport trips if these are booked well in advance. What extra services do you offer? • Nature drives and picnics in the car on rainy days. • Taking your shopping bags inside and placing them where you prefer. • We help to get the cat outside and lock any doors or windows. • We can assist with check-in at the airport, we collect you from the arrivals lounge and carry your luggage. • We will help you find your appointment at the hospital and we can stay with you if you prefer. Cam Calkoen: Bending Perceptions, Inspiring Change

Front row phobia

YES Disability Support Centre: News

Cam Calkoen is an inspirational speaker who is bending perceptions to inspire change and an attitude of awesomeness through simple, lasting human truths. Passionate about the Shore, this column reflects the awesomeness that surrounds us and the potential we all have to achieve a personal best.

Front row phobia - I don’t know if it’s a thing but I know you know what I’m writing about. As a presenter I see it all the time…people walk into the conference room relaxed, sipping their takeaway coffees, chatting away and then they see all the seats are full apart from the front row. It’s like the sound of fingernails on the blackboard. They’re no longer relaxed and avoidance becomes the default. All of a sudden, people realise they’ve been sitting all day and it would be good to stand for a bit, or the wall starts to look comfortable and a good place to lean. Almost everything else in the room becomes more desirable than taking the front row and running the risk off… whatever that little voice is saying within. My advice through this column is take the front row. Even if every other row is available sit in the front, unless it’s date night at the movies then go to the back, but at a conference, assembly, show, if the choice is available take it and this is why… There’s a lady who’s been at five separate events I’ve spoken at, I know…wow and she’s not my mum, but like a proud mum would be, she’s always in the front row. She’s a top performer in the industry I’m speaking with and when asked why she’s always in the front, often away from those who she knows, the logic that obviously contributes towards her success becomes clear. “In the front row there are no distractions between me and the stage; I can see better, I can hear better, I can be 100% present in what is happening in front of me. It’s like I’m the only one there.” What an admirable mindset that is. I got to practise this mindset as I sat front row at a gig as part of last month's comedy festival. Sharing via social media the photo of my front view of the stage brought about comments such as “abort”, “move back”, “you never want to sit front row man”. The show was fantastic, distraction-free and, as the show began to wind up, the comedian said: “Now you know me, I want to know you.” My palms began to sweat as the microphone came straight at me. This is what people dread, but you know what? I got an experience the guys down the back never got. I will never forget that show, my return on investment was far greater for the unique experience I got… AWESOME! Winners are at the front of those who follow, drivers are at the front of the car, pilots are at the front of the plane, captains make sure there is nothing disrupting their view all of this results in control and arriving at the desired destination. So as we enter our next event, sipping from a takeaway cup, what voice will we hear when we look at the available seats nearest the stage?

Youth Week: Yes I Can

By Mackenzie Kench of Yes Disability Resource Centre Youth Week, which was held from the 26th of May to the 4th of June, was all about acknowledging and celebrating the talents, passion and success of young people across the country. This is a familiar theme for the staff at the Yes Disability Resource Centre. We, at the Yes Disability Resource Centre, are currently working on ensuring we are providing young people with the services they need and want to become the best adult they can be. Our goal is to make this happen by using a “youth serving youth” strategy; meaning we keep up to date with the current youth perspective rather than trying to develop services based on older people's experiences and opinions. This means including youth, through our youth engagement group and other interested parties, in the development, redesign and implementation of our services. One service designed by young New Zealanders and offered by the Yes Disability Resource Centre, is a course called Yes I Can. The purpose of these workshops is to encourage other young adults to develop an understanding of their own identity and the core attributes they could potentially bring into leadership roles. Thanks to a Youth Week grant from Ara Taihoi, the Yes Disability Resource Centre was able to run a workshop, to coincide with Youth Week. On the same weekend, an adjacent course was held to train the next generation of "Yes I Can" facilitators to run future workshops. If you are interested in attending one of our next "Yes I Can" workshops, please contact me. www.yesdisability.org.nz

Feature: My Favourite Murrays Recipe: Bay Birdman Kelly Young Festival

Kelly's Warm Winter Buddha Bowl! Originally Kelly Young’s biggest claim to fame was being runner-up (to Brett McGregor) in New Zealand’s original Masterchef TV programme in 2010. These days the Bays schooled and Albany raised dynamo is mum to three kids – two boys aged four and five and a 10 month old daughter. She has just returned to her favourite patch north of the bridge after five years living in Christchurch due to her partner being involved in the re-build. She’s stoked to be home! Kelly has been in the fitness, health and food industry for a very long time. When she's not changing nappies and feeding bottomless pits, she’s focussed on changing lives in the health and wellness field, something that’s a big passion. Kelly is now a personal trainer and health and wellness coach who helps motivate and guide people to achieve things in life they never thought were achievable. In July she is part of a team launching a new fitness venture on the Shore – the very first ‘9Round' in Auckland. Kelly lists the things that spin her wheels as "doing fun things with my kids, catching up with mates, cooking, surfing, riding motorbikes, exercising, business, geeking out on health and wellness”. Wow! Aidan Bennett pinned her down for a chat and to get a favourite recipe from her in mid May. AIDAN BENNETT: First of all, tell us about your new venture, 9Round. What is it? KELLY YOUNG: 9Round is a concept that has become very popular in other parts and we are introducing it to Auckland. It is a 30 minute full body workout that has a mix of functional exercises as well as an element of boxing and kickboxing which is an awesome cardio workout. The circuits change daily and there are no class timetables. You get a personal trainer with you every session so it's unlimited affordable personal training at no extra costs. We are super excited to be the first to market in Auckland. Exciting times! AB: What is your recipe? KY: Warm Winter Buddha Bowl with Hummus and Lemon Dressing. AB: What’s the secret to making this recipe work? KY: Preparation. AB: Why did you choose this recipe? KY: I believe everyone could benefit a bit by eating a few more vegetables. I love my salads, they just adapt a bit throughout the colder months. AB: What do you love about cooking and baking? KY: I love the satisfaction I get from knowing my family is eating well. It also allows me to get creative. AB: Self taught, or did you have a cooking mentor? KY: I was self taught up until I went on Masterchef in 2010, from there I was given the opportunity to work with a number of New Zealand's top chefs in amazing restaurants. AB: What’s the biggest disaster you’ve had in the kitchen? KY: On Masterchef when we had to make pies.... I have no idea what I was up to. Haven't been able to bring myself to watch that episode and I have them all recorded on discs locked away! AB: What’s your favourite cuisine? KY: I love Asian cuisine, also tapas. A little bit of this and a little bit of that! I love textures. When I go to a restaurant I find it really hard to pick just one thing.

32

www.brownsbay.org.nz

AB: What foodie spots do you enjoy visiting locally? KY: We love to try new places all the time. However there is one place that I have yet to get too since we have been back up in Auckland, but we used to stop there after we had been for a surf up north and that is the Leigh Fish ’n' Chip shop. Their fish burgers were banging! Good Surf, Mean fish burger, pumping tunes, awesome vibe. AB: If you could dine anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? KY: I would go back 20 years ago and dine at my nana’s. We're lucky to still have her here with us. She doesn't cook so much now but I remember the days where we would have a special occasion on and she would put the mad spread on. And her baking was to die for. Nothing beats good home cooking. To contact Kelly you can email her at: Young_Kelly@hotmail.com

Education: Long Bay College

LBC students travel to India Over the April school holidays, 12 Long Bay College students (and two staff) had the incredible cultural experience of travelling to India. The visit provided an opportunity to gain an understanding of schools by strengthening our ties with Rukmini Devi Public School, located at two sites in Delhi. India is a place of vibrancy, colour and culture, rich in history going back through millennia and a country of immense and ornate palaces, tombs, forts, and landmarks including the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra. This beautifully designed-symmetrical, ivory-white marble building inlaid with semi-precious stones is a wonder of the world and was certainly a highlight of the trip. The students also visited Darjeeling for its tea plantation and monastery, before heading to Goa for a cooking class. They then travelled to Mumbai and visited a Bollywood film studio to see special effects, dance, a recording studio and filming of an Indian TV series. Other highlights included Jaipur for the magnificent Amber Fort, snake charmers, elephants and camels, and riding through the spice market on rickshaws in Delhi. The trip opened the students’ eyes to the world and they learnt that while the poverty in India is very real, so too is the sense of celebration for life, real values and the appreciation of joyous occasions.

Local ballet star wins prestigious scholarship A student at Long Bay College has won a two week full time scholarship at the Central Ballet School in London. Dane Head competed at the Alana Haines Australasian Awards during Easter Weekend at St James Theatre in Wellington. The Year 10 student was one of the seven semi-finalist Scholarship winners out of 238 dancers aged 13-15 years. The Alana Haines awards were set up in 1990 by former Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers Katie and Greg Haines, in memory of their 11-year-old daughter. Alana was just 11 when she was killed in a car crash on Christmas Eve 1989. A day before, the honours dance student had performed before a 1500-strong audience. In its 27year history, the event has become the crème de la crème of the dance world, when future stars in the making compete in the event which lures international judges. Dane spends a lot of his time in Wellington as he is an associate with New Zealand School of Dance and is in the Royal New Zealand Ballet mentoring programme this year.
