A Big Year ahead for Tristram European A message from Mark Hayward Happy New Year to you all. It’s great to get

into 2017 with some pace and it’s looking to be an eventful and exciting year ahead for Tristram European with growth, development and recruitment plans. Some exciting and challenging roles have been developed for Tristram European in line with supporting Skoda in March, our dedicated Commercial Centre and our plans for West Auckland. For those of you who may have visited the dealership over the Christmas and New year period you may have noticed our Commercial Showroom now under construction, soon to be re-opened as a new designed Skoda Showroom in March with a dedicated team in place. Across the road on the corner opposite our main showroom, our dedicated Commercial Centre will commence construction March and will re-open as New Zealands only dedicated Volkswagen Commercial site. A great way for companies and fleet business to view the full range and experience the excellent range of Commercial Vehicles available.

Volkswagen and Skoda to offer our customers, there will be something for everyone across all ranges. Read more about Fleet on page 9. February introduces our own dedicated Transporter Vehicle and Concierge Service to really take what we offer for our Service customers to a whole new level. A “collection and drop off “ service is now provided upon booking and we have set pricing in place for this. The reason we have introduced this service is because we understand the challenges in Auckland to get from A to B and juggle work/life to make it all happen. NZ Cricket Insights WITH WYNNE GREY As the summer opened out, so did the cricketing

roar across the Tasman. Losses against South Africa were shelved as multiple selection changes created a turnaround in Australia’s results chart including the Chappell-Hadlee victory on home soil. There was bounce in the team and the strut returned to the television commentary. However New Zealand pulled the handbrake on some of that jingoism to lift the trophy when they completed a 2-0 series win in Hamilton after the frustrating washout in Napier. Australia and South Africa share top billing in the ICC rankings for one-day cricket but New Zealand are not far adrift in third position. They were not in tight control of their game against the Aussies but individual performances got them onto the podium. At Eden Park, Martin Guptill and Neil Broom scored heavily and Mitchell Santner had the wickets before Ross Taylor’s ton, Dean Brownlee’s 63 and cameos from Santner and Kane Williamson stretched their total to 281. Australia lost wickets in clumps as Trent Boult claimed a record six for 33 to halt their rearguard chase 24 runs short of the target. It was tasty reminder for the visitors and a useful entrée to the main course inspection from South Africa. They will have quality batting from Hashim Amla, Quinton de Lock, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis and David Miller with bowling firepower from Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander, Dwaine Pretorius and Imran Tahir in an opening T20 at Eden Park before a five game ODI series then three tests in Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton. The remarkably talented AB de Villiers will play the

shorter-form games as he makes his return from an arm injury which interrupted his last year but like the injured Dale Steyn will miss the test series while others like Morne Morkel are also dealing with injuries. New Zealand have a mix of Photo of Wynne Gray concerns. Opener Martin Guptill has been struggling with a leg strain while one-day wicket-keeping for Tom Latham reduced his production at the top of the batting order. Brownlee showed a resilience when he was called in and after an absence of a few years, Broom returned with a string of solid returns in the middle order. There is not the same look about the batting group of Colin Munro, Colin de Grandhomme and Jimmy Neesham or the bowling effectiveness of that trio, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee. They get and are given more respect in test matches but suffer a fair bit of tap in the limited overs matches. A return from injury for wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi would help the balance in the side and picking legspinner Ish Sodhi would give the attack a different edge however coach Mike Hesson does not look as though he wants to roll the dice too much. He’s stuck with one spinner and a mix of all-rounders and can point to the Chappell-Hadlee trophy in return. He will retain Henry Nicholls in the test batting middle-order on the strength of his runs against Bangladesh but against South Africa’s pace, his technique and others will get a serious tune-up. The bowlers will get a similar workout but finding alternate choices for NZ remains an annual question.

Volkswagen New Zealand has recently released the latest jewel in its Commercial crown, the Amarok V6. It comes to New Zealand in two models, the Highline V6 and the top spec Aventura V6. Both models come in double cab with the 3 litre V6 TDi motor boasting 165Kw and a whopping 550Nm of torque. Add in the 8 speed auto transmission from the Touareg, Volkswagens legendary 4Motion 4WD system and the performance is simply sensational. 0-100kph in 7.9 seconds and yet still delivering a quoted combined figure of 7.8L/100km. This is a remarkable figure for a car let alone a ute! Ute owners who have had the opportunity to road test the V6 have all been astounded at how well it goes and handles and the superb comfort. Volkswagen owners all agree that it drives more like the Touareg than a ute- a Touareg with a tray on the back!

Back Chat WITH WYNNE GREY His first Waka Ama outing was awkward and Mike Weiss felt he was going backwards as he watched other paddlers.

However the challenge activated the competitive burn he’d carried from his rugby days in South Africa until a knee injury restricted him before settling in Auckland in the late 90’s and looking to broaden his sporting interests. “I got my arse well and truly kicked that first time in a boat but it fired me up and I just wanted to improve,” he recalled. “I felt I was going so slowly on that first paddle but it made me want to sort it out.” These days Weiss is heavily involved in running the sport and working his tail off paddling as much as he can around his job as Chief Executive at Konnect Net Limited. “The more I do this, the more competitive and dedicated I get,” he said. “It’s like all forms of paddling, it is a mix of being very technical and physical. Down on Lake Pupuke, Lisa Carrington trains near us and it’s great just watching her devotion, he attention to detail and how precise and smooth she is in her work.

“You admire that excellence. You try to get the angles, teamwork and precision right and when you hit it, it is a beautiful thing. The other side is when you get it all wrong.”

There are 4651 registered Waka Ama paddlers in six regions throughout New Zealand and outrigger paddling is also starting to make headway into schools where Weiss says it is challenging the more traditional rowing.

This is racing season and Weiss has been getting up well before dawn to train on the water at least three times a week and go to the gym several other days. He’s competed in a recent individual 30kms race

ANNA WILKINSON MEXICO TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016

Travelling to Mexico had to be the

highlight of last year, not only was it a great escape from cold NZ, but the location really was breath taking. On my first run in Cozumel I instantly noticed the heat, it was extremely humid which made this a whole new experience for me. By the time race day came I still was not used to the extreme temperatures, but at least the heat made for a non-wetsuit swim. The water was incredible. Crystal clear and full of sea life. I walked down the pontoon to the start line and jumped in the water where I waited for the starting gun to go off. It was a hectic swim start but I managed to get into my rhythm quickly and came out of the water in 7th, my best swim to date. I worked hard on the bike, pushing the pace and catching the leading bunch of 4. I came off the bike in 2nd place but the heat got to me and I finished in 36th place. Overall I am happy with my efforts and am hoping to be on fire for the NZ 2016/17 tri season.

match made in … the forest. In the last few months of 2016 the managements of these two very different companies found a common ground of which an exciting new partnership has begun. From the initial emails, right through these first few months of our agreement, things have come together seamlessly and effectively. That’s something that today’s corporate dealings often lack, which shows a true representation of the nature or the vision that both companies want their customers to experience. Penny and the sales team had listened to what our requirements were in one simple previous visit and delivered our new work horse complete with eye popping graphics, personalised plate, top of the line bike security, functional accessories and of course a head turning expression of things to come. 2015/2016 were bought by businesses, rental companies and the government, so we know that there is a real need for a Fleet Specialist contact for consumers that understands how Fleet Business works. Kent joined Tristram European in 2013 in passenger sales and has recently moved into Fleet sales for the dealership.
