Full mix of Teams still alive There is guaranteed to be a non-top flight team in the quarter-finals of the Chatham Cup after the conclusion of this weekend’s e Round Four. This round throws together Auckland sides Waitakere City and Waitemata, neither of whom compete in the northern region’s elite competition, the NRFL Premier League.

Waitemata have only just joined the NRFL fold after winning last season’s AFF/NFF Conference to earn a place in the second division while Waitakere are freshly relegated from the top level. Both are performing well in league action, the Jake Butler-led Waitakere leading Division One while Waitemata have adapted quickly to the lift in standard and currently sit second in Division Two.

Despite operating in the third rung of local football, Andy Boyens Waitemata have a host of players in the ranks who have starred Luke Burgess on far bigger stages, such as Colin Gardyne, Joe Edwards, Craig Rory Butterfield Wylie and George Curry – all of whom boast national league Scott Campbell experience.

In the middle of the country, the only side still flying the flag for Central Football is Palmerston North Marist and they will look to keep doing so by defeating North Wellington. The capital men are not members of the Central League – the region’s highest level – but could fancy their chances against a Palmerston North Marist side struggling near the bottom of that competition. Marist have won just once in the league all season and will look to make the most of home advantage in trying to avoid an upset. The other match in the area is likely to be a real humdinger 3. quite the giant-killing feat of a Queenstown win as they are at least in the same league as their opponents. It would still be some achievement though as Cashmere are well on their way to a fourth consecutive Mainland Premier League title while Universities have only earned three wins so far. With the 18-strong squad and four travelling reserves confirmed, Readings noted that this was the hardest set of selections he has made during his time in charge of the national team.

The Team List ....

The New Zealand Women’s Team, ranked No. 17 on the FIFA World Rankings, will face the defending Olympic Champions USA, Colombia (No.24) and France (No.3) when their campaign begins on August 3 in Belo Horizonte. “This will be my third Olympic Games, along with some of the players, and this has definitely been the toughest squad to choose,” said Readings. Seven players in the squad – captain Abby Erceg, Anna Green, Amber AndyRia Boyens Hearn, Percival, Kirsty Yallop, Katie Duncan and Ali Riley – travel toLuke BrazilBurgess for their third Olympic Games. Five of the squad have played 100 games or more for New Zealand – Erceg (126), Duncan (nee Hoyle) Rory Butterfield (115), Hearn (112), Percival (116) and Riley (101) – while Yallop if selected will play Campbell her 100th game for the team in the opener of the Olympics Scott against the USA.

Nathan Canton

There a number of others – Annalie Longo (91), Betsy Hassett (91), Jackare Caunter Rosie White (81), Sarah Gregorius (78) and Hannah Wilkinson (74) who Louie Caunter have been regulars in the New Zealand Women’s Football team over the past eight years or more and have helped the team climb to their Nathan Cranney highest ever FIFA World Ranking. Readings said experience is the one Sean Crombie of the most important factors when it comes to big tournaments. His team has A’Court done a lot of research on what leads to success at major Darren events and the common trend is the teams with the oldest age and Alex Ferguson experience.

“That experience will be a key factor when we get to the Olympics, no doubt.” Meanwhile at the other end of the experience spectrum, two of the New Zealand Women’s team in Jasmine Pereira and Meikayla Moore are heading to the Olympics for the first time. Katie Bowen was in the travelling reserves for the 2012 London Olympics but is selected in the squad for the first time at an Olympics.
