Drama Company
by Benefitz
This year the Drama Company planned to produce four productions, which was an incredible goal and one we would have been proud of. We started the year with a visit to Wonderland by falling down the rabbit hole with Alice, and we were taken on a journey of magic and surprise. Various lockdowns then put a stop to some of our performances, but through our preparations we were able to somewhat continue our journey. We moved to America, on to a soccer field to support the girls’ team, The Wolves. We navigated the world through their eyes and looked at the challenges they faced on a daily basis and the connections they made as a team. We then headed to a deserted island where debris covered the shoreline, and so we headed into the forest and staring back at us was a pig’s head being held up by Lord of the Flies boys. Our last planned stop on this journey was visiting Ebenezer Scrooge in a very cold and dark London town, theoretically just in time for Christmas.
We had 48 company members that consisted of a mix of Year 9 to Year 13 students, and they were lucky enough to perform to audiences of over 700 people at The Pumphouse and our Performing Arts Centre. The students all prepared to take part in the audition process for each of the productions and some took on roles backstage too. We planned countless rehearsals during the weeks and weekends with very short turnarounds for each play, but the students were not fazed by this at all and relished the opportunity to perform, work together and showcase their talents.
One of the main foundations of the Drama Company is the word ‘ensemble,’ which means ‘a group of musicians, actors, or dancers who perform together’ and this is exactly what we promote. We all have our roles to play in the productions we produce, and without each other, no plays would be possible. I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff involved with helping us, and especially to Sara Hunt and Sophie Catterall. I would also like to thank all the students involved in the company this year for their hard work and dedication, your efforts are hugely appreciated.
