Te Kiko O Rangitoto
by Benefitz
Ka tākoto te mānuka – the challenge has been laid.
At Rangitoto, our kapa haka crew, Te Kiko o Rangitoto is a multi level, multi ethnic group who share a strong sense of whanaungatanga and aroha for waiata and haka.
In 2021, Rangitoto College returned to the ASB Polyfest stage for the first time in over 10 years. ASB Polyfest is the biggest Polynesian festival on the planet. Our kapa haka performed first on the Māori stage to an audience of hundreds and a live stream of many, many more.
Polyfest preparation started early in January for Matua Heke, Whaea Sarah, and Matua Gideon to prepare the performance bracket. When the term started, the kapa crew trained for up to 10 hours a week, growing in resilience and perseverance, to pursue excellence. The theme for the performance was “Kia Mau ki tō Reo Rangatira,” “Hold fast to the language of your ancestors.” Perhaps the highlight of the bracket was performing the haka, Ka tākoto te mānuka, challenging everyone to stand up and be a warrior to protect Te Reo Māori. Te Kiko o Rangitoto 2021 exceeded our expectations and has set the bar high for future years to follow.
Te Kiko o Rangitoto would like to thank Mr Gale, the Board of Trustees, Whaea Davina, Whaea Jess, and Whaea Diana for the amazing support they give us. Finally a big mihi to the Naea whānau, Leah Te Haara, and Holly Purnell, who have been staunch supporters of Te Kiko o Rangitoto in 2021.
Kia ora e te iwi o Rangitoto. Kia mau ki te reo rangatira!
Haramai te toki, haumi e, hui e, tāiki e!
