A Big Year Ahead for Tristram European A message from Mark Hayward Thanks for joining me for our 9th edition of INSIDE, our customer e-magazine. Where has the year gone so far? We have been working through some major developments throughout the business this year, which are still in progress. You may have seen the new completed Tristram ŠKODA building, which looks fantastic. This showroom is completely worth a visit as its clean lines and well-spaced area is extremely inviting. With a new team heading up Tristram ŠKODA, I am confident that the “Tristram Experience” will be a highlight within this brand here. The Kodiaq so far is proving to be a complete game-changer for the ŠKODA brand. It has brought awareness to the brand and showcased the brand quality and its clever, well thought out features. This is a vehicle you need to see and experience and gain exposure to the excellent brand that ŠKODA is.

departments which we are building into Managers. The Leadership and Path to Management Workshop is conducted weekly after hours whereby we openly discuss challenges and how we handle those along with growing our people, which really, in my opinion, is the key to the success of the business. I have been able to give many staff opportunities recently to step up and take on more responsibility, and I am able to offer this to staff as I see them develop throughout the Leadership and Path to Management Workshop. Lastly, just a few changes you may notice online with the opening of ŠKODA. A complete separation of two brands within our website now defines the two brands that I am very proud to have at Tristram, Volkswagen & ŠKODA. To visit the new websites, you can continue to go to www.tristrameuropean.co.nz and then select the brand you wish to visit, or you can go to www. tristramvolkswagen.co.nz or www.tristramŠKODA. co.nz . If you are looking for Pre-owned Vehicles, you can find our full selection on both websites. Enjoy the magazine and stay in touch.

The Field Days is currently on as you are receiving this magazine and this year we have our Sales Managers fronting Tristram as part of Volkswagen and ŠKODA. The Volkswagen tent will give you a good look at e-Golf along with Arteon, which Regards has only just arrived. E-GOLF The Future Is Electric The history of electric vehicles actually dates

right back to mid-19th century, and inventors from Hungary, Vermont, Netherlands, USA and Britain can all be credited as early creators of the electric motor. However, the high cost, low top speed, and short range of battery powered vehicles compared to internal combustion engine means that the EV arena is left underdeveloped until the beginning of the 21st century and deepening concerns overs environmental damage and sustainability. New Zealand has always had a high level of renewable energy, and as the travel range offered by electric vehicles increases through battery development, it is no surprise that the arrival of the e-Golf has caused so much interested.

system recommended by the government. The other must do when you add a e-Golf to your stable is to download the “PlugShare” and “Vector EV Charging” apps, which will show you maps of Type 2/CCS charging stations nationwide. Whilst exact specifications are to be confirmed, the e-Golf will be available with the following technology and safety options: Lane Assist, Side Assist, Front Assist with City Emergency Brake (City EB), Multi Collision Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear view camera and Driver Fatigue Detection. Exactly the sort of peace of mind features you would expect from Volkswagen. To register your interest for the e-Golf, call our team on 09 441 0090, or email sales@tristrameuropean.co.nz – look forward to sharing an electric future with you!

The new fully electric e-Golf is powered by lithium-ion batteries (36kWh) and comes with an electric motor producing 100kW of power. This 5-seater is designed as part of the Golf family and is produced alongside the more conventionally powered Golfs, so the design and features are very familiar to operate for those who know Volkswagen models. The e-Golf offers four unique levels of regenerative braking that you can choose to control the rate of battery recharge. This feature is helpful in slow-moving traffic as it assists in extending the range and enhancing efficiency. We expect the new e-Golf to have a range in excess of 200km and the AA has conducted a “real driving range” test to achieve over 150km. The e-Golf comes with a trickle charger that plugs into your home domestic plug socket and will charge the car overnight. Cost of a full charge will be around $5 which equates to a fuel price of $0.30 per litre. When you are out and about, there are now over 60 fast charging stations in the country which the e-Golf can be charged at. You will be needing a Type 2/CCS plug, which is the European standard, and this will provide an 80% battery charge in just over half an hour. This is also the

E-GOLF The Future Is Electric WHAT IS THE DRIVE LIKE IN AN E-GOLF? If you cannot wait for a test drive, here is how we found the e-Golf, • Extremely smooth drive as it has no clutch or gears, • Quick acceleration as there is instant torque, • Very quiet, almost a noiseless drive as the motor uses no energy at all when the car is still, • Excellent handling and very sure-footed – the location of the batteries (in the floor) reduces the centre of gravity, which makes the e-Golf even more stable. KEY TERMINOLOGIES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES • BEV – Battery Electric Vehicle – these are full electric vehicles which have a large battery (in cells) powering an electric motor. They have silent and have no internal combustion engine thus lower maintenance. The e-Golf falls into this

category. • PHEV – Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle - these vehicles have both an electric and petrol motor. The battery in a PHEV can be charged but is much smaller than a BEV and thus they cannot go as far on electric power (around 30km). Higher maintenance. Example Golf GTE, Audi A3 e-tron • Hybrid – these are similar to a PHEV but cannot be charged. They fill up only on petrol/diesel and use the engine and regenerative braking to recharge a small battery that gives a very short electric range (1-2km). You most likely would have sat in one of these as the Toyota Prius falls into this category. • kWh – Electric Vehicle Battery capacity is measured in kWh. This will be the new form of measurement, as this measures the capacity of the battery and is key for range.

ŠKODA REVIEW BY BARRY SYMINTON Tristram European has recently established

a ŠKODA Dealership at their Wairau Road site. The new exclusively ŠKODA showroom is very modern in appearance, well appointed and certainly well worth a visit. Don’t base your opinion on ŠKODA on the reputation of their cars from several decades ago – their current range is attractive, technologically advanced with excellent infotainment/multi-media systems and good to drive.

While I will sample other models in the future, I was given a ŠKODA Superb Sportline (the top of the range) for the day to judge how it measured up as a mid-size range sports sedan – and the answer is very well indeed.

APPEARANCE My car was Corrida Red and with the glossy black grille and silver/grey 19 inch alloys, it looked very sharp.

Inside the seats were black Alcantara leather, having integrated headrests in the front. The dashboard was very informative, highly specced and easy to use, in other words, typically Volkswagen group.

DRIVING

With 206 Kw, it felt fast and handled well, with good positive steering and brakes. The driving position was very comfortable with room for three in the back (with three headrests) if required. My impression was it felt like a quicker, larger version of the current Golf GTi, and was equally well appointed. Another outstanding feature is the huge wellshaped boot. At 625 litres, it is larger than that of the latest Passat, which is already bigger than all its other competitors. Summing up, we have a sporty mid-sized sedan with • Sporting good looks, • Powerful and flexible 4-cylinder 206Kw motor, • Four wheel drive incorporating 6 speed DSG transmission, • Well finished accommodation for 5 people, • Comprehensive safety and driver assistance, • Fuel consumption in the 7 to 9 litres range during normal motoring which is good in its class, • Three year or 100,000kms factory warranty (whichever comes first) Plus with Tristram, their first class Sales, Technicians and Service support. Certainly the ŠKODA is worth serious consideration should you be in the market for this type of car.

THE CAFÉ

CATCH US ON TV Taking a new approach to how we reach

out to our customers and grow the Tristram name, we have been fortunate to start an exciting partnership with The Café. The show features on TV3 weekdays at 9am and really is a great watch full of interesting guests, cooking, products and in general a lot of fun.

The show films with a live audience, and interestingly, if you have been watching The Café Show, there are no TV ad’s, so you get a full un-interrupted 1 hour show. Our very good customer, Alex, is the show’s Director and we have had the pleasure of looking after Alex for a little while now at Tristram. Alex, is a true car fanatic, hence why he approached Tristram ŠKODA and Tristram Volkswagen to be part of the action with The Café. The show is hosted by Mike Puru and Mel Homer, who have great synergy and are very enjoyable to watch. Holly, who has the energy of an overnight charged battery, fronts the informercial segments throughout the show and is also Director. You will see Holly driving her new Volkswagen Tiguan around town and Alex sporting the ŠKODA Fabia Colour Sport. Look out for our vehicle reviews on the show and competitions throughout Facebook.

LIONS TOUR.

a debrief with Wynne Grey Warren Gatland has several advantages

as he and the Lions work their way through their New Zealand tour. He knows the rugby landscape here and won’t be shocked by any reactions about his side as they work their way through a 10game schedule. Gatland experienced all those hazards during his long playing career at Waikato and the All Blacks then several coaching stints before switching his attention to work in Europe. This is his third Lions tour after visits to South Africa in 2009 and Australia in 2013 and if anyone knows how to make the Lions click, Gatland should have an advantage. He also knows when the post-tour judgements are made, results in the test series are the serious currency—the only arbiter. He made some tough selection calls in Australia four years ago when he ignored the renowned Brian O’Driscoll for the final test as his side thumped the Wallabies. That decision provoked particularly angry reactions from the Irish sections of the media but Gatland trusted his instincts and succeeded. He will have to make similar big calls on this trip if the Lions are to find a way to overcome the All Blacks who have played a compelling style of rugby to hold their World Rugby rating as the top side under Stave Hansen’s watch.

They’ve got some outstanding players and so have the Lions. Finding the best combinations and a team style to let those gifts prosper, is the task facing Gatland, his coaching crew and experienced group of players. The Lions can do all the public appearances and interactive visits which will make up for the detached antics from Clive Woodward’s 2005 visit with the Lions. The balance sheets will tick over very well for New Zealand Rugby and the Lions after this trip but the greatest reward for the Lions awaits them in the three tests. Finding a series triumph from two tests at Eden Park and one in Wellington will take the Lions to an exalted status. It would be a Neil Armstrong moment for the tourists. It’s a feat they’ve only achieved once in their history, way back in 1971, in the amateur era, when the Lions had a coach from Wales and a squad packed with talent in every position. They used their enterprise in provincial games then buttoned down their style to play the percentages and grind their way to a series win. This time they’ve got a coach from Wales and a cast of high-quality players but they face an All Black rival with more cohesive sting than their 1971 predecessors as well.

THE NEW AMAROK BY GENE BROWNE

You will all undoubtedly know that VW’s

Amarok is a stunning ute. When it first came to market, it made the competition sit up and take notice forcing many other brands to go back to the drawing boards. The Amarok set a new standard in terms of quality technology, raw off road ability, load carrying capacity, and driving refinement. I would even suggest that some of you read (with a smile on your face) the various motoring magazines that ranked it top of class for a couple of years. In effect, it became the new benchmark it the ute market. Now VW has released an upgrade to the mighty Amarok. The biggest and most talked about change is the addition of the legendary V6 3.0L TDI motor from the VW stable. The question is how good is it? The answer is VERY! International off-road magazines are already rating it higher than others in the 4WD ute market. The new V6 still runs all the excellent features from the earlier Amarok model but has added some innovative technology and refinement to up the ante. I was asked by Tristram European to provide comment on its off-road prowess (as I train various companies on off road driving techniques and I am fortunate enough to experience many 4WD vehicles in off road environments). I can easily attest that the permanent 4MOTION drive system is second to none... and that’s before you take the class leading electronic aids into account. Many people will be familiar with the standard lockable centre diff option in part time vehicles to gain 4WD.

differential, which has several advantages that transfer from on-road to off-road driving and then adds a high level of electronic systems and a class leading 8 speed automatic gearbox to get the best from the Amarok. This is all before you talk about the improved safety systems, new infotainment systems, upgrades to the interior and exterior design. The difficulty is in trying to describe here in writing when in reality it needs to be experienced out in the field. Although you can drive away knowing you have one of the best off-road vehicles on the road, you can also take the option of learning to understand and harness what makes the VW Amarok a class leader. Then you will truly get the best out of your vehicle and understand why it is considered the class leader of the ute market and arguably the premium 4WD ute in New Zealand. You might be thinking I am being paid to say all the above. For my off-road training company, I had to select a new 4WD ute to be my workhorse this year. I have worked with other manufacturers brands recently and know how good they are but have chosen to go with the new Amarok. Why? Class leading on road comfort and off road ability, and a high level of safety features. On my training courses I need a vehicle that will perform to a level higher than any of my clients on any terrain. The V6 Amarok ticks all the boxes and was the logical choice. Much as we hate to encounter it, the reality is that all machinery may breakdown – this is why all of our brand new Volkswagen or ŠKODA‘s come with a three year Mechanical Warranty to protect you against the whatif’s. Think about it… have you ever regaled a tale of a car broken down, or had to rescue a mate from the side of the road? Over the past 3 years, wasn’t it reassuring to know that you had Roadside Assist to count on if you were stuck on the side of the road with your vehicle, and you need to get home? What if you had a flat battery or a flat tyre? Did the kids take the car out last night and left it so close to empty, you are rushing to work… Only to discover on the motorway that the car is out of

fuel? Less dramatic although more likely, imagine driving up north behind a logging truck, a stone flicks up and shatters your windscreen - what would you do? Volkswagen ŠKODA has created an extended warranty option should you wish to keep your beloved vehicle beyond the factory warranty period. You will enjoy the same benefits as the Factory warranty (T&C’s apply), and thoughtful features like helping you contact your friends and family should you be caught up and require roadside assist, overall leaving you with more time to enjoy your motoring, and back to the important stuff. Insurance is one of the few products in this world that you can’t get retrospectively, so when you are booking your third service with our service advisor team, have a chat to them about your options. Alternatively, give our Business Manager Davide Punturiero a call on 09 441 0090 – he is our insurance and warranty specialist.

GET A LITTLE MORE GOLF: by Barry Syminton

A little more oomph

A shade more exuberance A dash more flash

A tad more tech

Volkswagen has just launched their

range of facelifted Golfs, (some call it the Golf 7.5), and I have been privileged to drive these cars. The Golf is already universally regarded as the best hatchback worldwide, and having experienced these facelift models, I am convinced they will only further enhance that reputation with improved safety, technology and design. There are five models to choose from, almost all petrol. All are 4 cylinders.

• Comfortline, 1.4L, 92kw: Manual and Automatic • Highline, 1.4L, 110kw: Automatic • R Line: 1.4L, 110kw: Automatic • GTi, 2.0L, 169kw; Manual and Automatic • Golf R, 2.0L, 228kw: Manual and Automatic Both 2 litre models have 7 kw power increases – and the Golf R will out accelerate base model Porsche Boxters and Caymans!! There are also Comfortline and Highline wagons, one of the Comfortlines being diesel. Some upgrades are shown on the next page.

GET A LITTLE MORE GOLF: by Barry Syminton

A hint of bling

A smidgeon more smarts

Overseas model shown. Local specifications may differ.

APPEARANCE New front and rear bumpers across the range New LED running lights across the range New full LED tail lights on all LED running indicators on GTi and Golf R – Running indicators strobe a progressive illuminating bar of amber LED lights as they blink New exhaust pipe on all, with trapezoidal exhausts on Highline and R Line DRIVER ASSISTANCE AND SAFETY FEATURES New 8-inch glass covered touchscreen across the range with enhanced information Front Assist Radar – a sensor housed behind the front Volkswagen badge monitors the traffic ahead of the car, warning if you get too close, and even applying the brakes if it detects a possible collision Lane Assist – an excellent feature whereby warning lights in each outside rear view mirror indicate if a vehicle is entering the “blind spot” area behind th car.

Keyless Entry/Start (KESSY) except for Comfortline There are 4 new paint colours, plus on the 1.4L cars, for those who want to stand out, Turmeric Yellow. The 1.4L cars are very refined and quiet, yet still feel livelier than earlier models. The GTi and Golf R are clearly more sporting in nature and a shade faster than their predecessors. Regarding fuel consumption, the whole range is competitive, reducing any economic advantage diesel vehicles may have had. Summing up, and I have owned 6 earlier Golfs myself, I find these facelifted models shaper in appearance both internally and externally with improved safety, performance and finish, yet easily recognisable as Golf’s – which is a very good thing. It is no surprise to learn their market share in New Zealand is steadily rising, and should continue to do so. If you have enjoyed reading this review and want to find out more about the new Golf for yourself, call our team to book your test drive.

BACK CHAT BY WYNNE GREY

Several sporting crashes dominated recent

headlines.

Scott Dixon limped away from his horrifying crash at the Indianapolis 500 with damage to his ankle but little other discernible harm. How he appeared so composed afterwards as he spoke about his “wild ride” was another chapter in this miracle escape. When Dixon’s car slammed into another at about 350kph, airplaned into the barrier and flipped several times, the outcome looked grim for the 2008 champion. His wife Emma was in the pits and thought the worst. “I really didn’t think he was coming home,” she said. It was the second time in a week pole-sitter Dixon had survived some rough stuff after being robbed at gunpoint when he went on a team mission to buy food from a drive-through outlet. At Indy on lap 54, lapped driver Jay Howard hit the wall and his car fell down the track into Dixon’s path. Dixon made the split-second decision to turn under Howard but just clipped him and was sent into a terrifying somersault. His car broke into pieces but Dixon was saved by the carbonfibre survival cockpit. Those safety tubs were introduced to open wheel racers in the 60s and two decades later the McLaren race team founded by Kiwi Bruce McLaren, brought the idea to Formula One racing. Modern race cars are also designed so sections crumple and absorb energy on impact and it’s not transferred to the cockpit. Drivers are also fitted with mandatory head and neck support systems

which stop the body suffering whiplash during crashes while Dixon took his hands off the wheel to make sure he was only connected to the safety shell. In Florida it was another crash in the declining fortunes of 14 times major winner Tiger Woods when police found a stationary car with its motor running, blinkers flashing and the golfer asleep at the wheel. The Mercedes had several flat tyres and other damage when police found it close to the golfer’s Jupiter home. Woods was initially suspected of drink driving and dash-cam footage from the police car showed the bleary golfer struggling to walk, speaking in a slurred manner and unable to follow instructions. He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, chemicals or controlled substances and cited for other vehicle offences but Woods insisted he had not had any alcohol and that was later confirmed after police tested him twice. In a later statement Woods said he was suffering from an unusual reaction to medication prescribed for him after his recent back surgery and he didn’t realise how strongly he had been affected. It’s the latest chapter in a saddening decline for the man tipped to overhaul the majors’ haul of the great Jack Nicklaus. In 2009 he first publicly showed his frailties when a domestic argument ended with him crashing his car into a fire hydrant. His wife left him, sponsors deserted him then back injuries plagued him but after this latest drama, Nicklaus is urging the golf community to embrace and help Woods put his life together.

Wheels & Tyres Common Questions

In the wheels and tyres department there are quite a few questions I get asked on a day to day basis, so I thought I’d take this time to answer some of the ones that spring up more often than others.

What should my tyre pressure be? This is normally the first question I get from 95% of my customers. The correct tyre pressure to run varies between vehicles and also if you have aftermarket wheels and tyres.Should your car have TPMS (Tyre Pressure Measuring System) then I cannot stress enough that you should stick with the manufacturer’s recommendations. With vehicles getting smarter and smarter, even a slight drop in tyre pressure could vary from something more minor as an annoying light on your dash to as serious as affecting traction control. You should find the correct pressure for your vehicle on the placard on the inside of one of the vehicles doors. If you are driving a standard vehicle with factory wheels and tyres, I would still run them at manufacturer’s recommendation, however if you are loading your vehicle up cargo wise, whether it be the nature of your job or packing in everyone’s bags as you are going on a road trip, I would add an extra 2-4psi per tyre to help assist with the load. I would also add an extra couple of psi if you have had a lower profile tyre fitted to larger wheels, just to ensure protection for your rims against our unforgiving New Zealand roads. Lastly, a smaller hatch back doesn’t necessarily need high psi! You may notice dropping 1-2 psi may give you the a more comfortable ride that you’re looking for. If you are uncertain of your tyre pressure, give our service advisor team a call on 09 441 0090 and have a chat.

How often do I need a wheel alignment? Here’s another good one and a very important one! Let’s face it, no one likes forking out for new tyres. The best thing you can do is ensure you are doing all you can to get as much mileage as possible out of them. The way to do this is to do a wheel alignment every 10,000-12,000kms or every 6 months, whichever comes first. The reason we need to do this so often is because of things like pot holes, pulling into driveways too quickly and the general wear due the natural grooves in the road that wear the tyres the wrong way. Doing a wheel alignment and rotating your tyres/wheels at the same time is the best way to ensure maximum life out of your tyres. Ask your Service Advisor about a wheel alignment and tyre rotation next time you call in, or give them a call on 09 441 0090 – we are here to help.

Woodhill Mountain Bike Park News Woodhill MTB Park in

2017, like many others has seen a whirlwind of activity. Our last addition to Inside Tristram seems like yesterday. The wet weather favours our sand base activities (sand plus water = speed and grip) so we are just about to ramp up even more during the wetter months. The highlight of this half of the year has been the word on every sporting lips, “World Masters Games. We have spent the last 2 and half years rebuilding our park from the ground up. We wanted to be able to say that we have a World Class riding destination for everyone to enjoy right here in Auckland. When we were selected to host the Mountain Biking Event, it was our chance to prove that and we wanted to put on a real show. It was a chance to show the world that we were ready for them.

Woodhill Mountain Bike Park News

Our Operations Manager Haydn Shore is also a St Johns Emergency Response Member and with his knowledge of the park and medical experience he was rewarded by being the St Johns Medical Site Controller. Add in his customised VW Amarok to get up into the forest trails quickly and effortlessly and the event was well covered if anything did go wrong. Luckily though there was only a few minor incidents.

The VW Amarok continues to make life easier for Haydn and his Trail Crew getting into tight and secluded areas of the forest (including towing in big loads) much further, to places that in the last 4wd would have been dangerous to attempt. We are still learning the potential of this amazing machine. In particular the Off Road Mode option continues to blow our mind with its effortless descending under load down steep technical terrain.

We look forward to a very busy winter and hope everyone gets the chance to come up and check out great venue.

expires on 31 april 2018

Whilst the race course selection had to be tamed somewhat to fit into the strict criteria of UCI requirements we were able to ensure riders that were training in our park prior to the event got to try the rest of the trail network. Despite a hectic Easter Weekend and School holidays combined during the week before, everything fell into place in the final few days and the event was a huge success.
