Welcome back! A message from Mark Hayward Welcome to back to INSIDE for 2018. I hope those of you who have taken time out have had a relaxing break, or at least been able to take advantage of some of the fantastic weather we have had. The horizon for 2018 has more exciting times planned for the company. Our West Auckland purpose-built Volkswagen dealership is taking shape in terms of the final stages before the concrete goes down. I’m really excited about this dealership, as it will be a full-service dealership, offering Sales, Service & Parts and designed to suit the style of Tristram European and how we function. With such huge development and population in West Auckland and North West, there is a real opportunity for not only Tristram European, but more importantly, our customers who will find it much more convenient with us being closer to them. 2018 will also see the completion of the Commercial Vehicle site across the road from us, also with Commercial Vehicle Specialists, in which we will be training to provide our customers with great advice and knowledge particularly in the van space, where there can be so many variances. With the opening of both buildings in the second half of 2018, we will be set to reach a level of around the number of 95 employees, therefore my main focus with the team is
around further improving our customer service experience, and making it better than ever before! How will we do this? Parking, being number 1. which I know is an ongoing frustration for our customers. I will be working closely with my management team around improvements of our customer experience right throughout the business so that they can lead and coach our teams through the level of service I want delivered and I look forward getting your feedback around this. We talk a lot about cars, as that’s what we do. Some great product is coming through for both brands this year, which you will read about in this INSIDE edition. Tiguan Allspace, the first 7 seater Volkswagen in the model range will arrive in February, along with a full make-over for Polo. In the ŠKODA Range, Karoq takes the place of the long-standing Yeti, looking very much like the Kodiaq, but a smaller SUV. We will see Karoq arrive in the second quarter of 2018. For now, we hope you are having a positive start to the year and enjoy the read!

Karoq Preview Iarrive ntroducing the all-new ŠKODA Karoq; set to in New Zealand in early 2018 Equipped for all of life’s adventures, the ŠKODA Karoq extends the ŠKODA SUV family after the successful launch of the award winning ŠKODA Kodiaq in 2017.
Contact our ŠKODA Team now on skoda@tristrameuropean.co.nz or head over to our website where you can be the first to find out more: www.tristramskoda.co.nz/store/range/ karoq/
The ŠKODA Karoq is a completely new SUV. The name originates from the language of the Alutiiq, an indigenous tribe who live on an island off the southern coast of Alaska. The name Karoq is a combination of the terms ‘KAA’RAQ’ (car) and ‘RUQ’ (arrow). The Karoq offers exceptional space in the interior and boot, new driver-assistance systems, full LED headlights/daytime running lights and for the first time in a ŠKODA, a digital instrument panel. Safety is paramount, the Karoq features a rigid body shell, ingeniously designed crumple zones, seven airbags, ABS, ESC and on top of that, there are a number of state-of-the-art assist systems to protect pedestrians, keep the Karoq far away enough from the car in front, monitor safe lane switching or keep the car in its lane, assist the driver when parking, and prepare the occupants for collisions. All the many hooks, holders and storage compartments judiciously arranged around the new Karoq in the spirit of the “Simply Clever” slogan make a difference between a good and a great car. And the Karoq is great in this respect.

Driving Miss Daisy SKODA, helping to Drive Miss Daisy… You may have seen a fleet of SKODA Yeti’s around town, distinctively sign-written, blue in colour with a giant daisy on the side. The Driving Miss Daisy – Milford/Albany fleet not only look good, but they are doing a whole lot of good in the community. We sat down with local Milford/Takapuna and Albany Franchisee Alan Jennings recently, while he was having one of his SKODA’s serviced at Tristram European, to find out more about what this great nationwide company gets up to. Driving Miss Daisy offer an affordable, safe, friendly and reliable companion driving service, whether it be for the elderly, disabled or for busy parents needing to get their children to an afterschool activity. Alan says his customers love the SKODA Yeti’s, they comment on how easy they are to get in and out of, they love the smoothness of the ride and the roominess of the boot for the likes of walkers and wheelchairs. Many of Alan’s clients are regulars, he thoroughly enjoys bringing independence to their lives, enabling them to get out, have fun and help them with their everyday living.
From taking a group of people for coffee then sitting at the Chelsea Sugar Factory for a relaxing chat, to dropping a 12-year-old girl to her dance lessons at the Apollo Theatre Dance Studio, Alan and his team of 3 drivers are kept very busy. Alan says his Driving Miss Daisy team go the extra mile for their clients, like recently when he took 93-year-old lady to do her weekly grocery shop, when it came time to take her home he was able to take her walker out of the boot along with the heavy groceries and carry them up her stairs and get them to her kitchen. And here at Tristram European, we enjoy going the extra mile for Alan and his team too. Alan says he really appreciates the service he receives from the dealership, and makes special mention of Vinnie, Tim and Louis in the front line of our Service Department. We enjoy working with great local businesses here at Tristram European, and offering our 5 Star Customer Service to them, so they can in turn do the same for others. If you would like to find out more about the services Alan and his team offer, you can contact them on: milford@drivingmissdaisy.co.nz or call 09) 551 3050

Longstanding Employees O ver two decades of experience is on the move… Two of our longest serving employees are sadly leaving us. One for sunny Queensland while another is retiring. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Shaun Gordon and Peter Cook for over 10 years of service to Tristram European respectively. Peter, our Sales Administrator extraordinaire, started with the Volkswagen brand back in September 2000, when it was ‘Bill Tapper European’ and based in Albany. He moved with the company when Mark Hayward purchased the business and relocated it to its current site in 2007, where it became Tristram European.
Peter Cook
Shaun came to work at Tristram European in 2008, he was already an experienced Mechanic, having started in the profession at 19. Shaun leaves big shoes to fill, having controlled the jobs coming through the Workshop as well as helping his fellow technicians and dealing with our customers. We wish both well with their futures and thank them sincerely for their years of service to our company and customers. Shaun Gordan

Introducing the all new Arteon… Reviewed by Barry Syminton

new top of the range Volkswagen car, the Arteon has just launched in New Zealand. It is a very significant model as it announces Volkswagen’s upgrading move to compete directly with Audi, BMW and Mercedes in the medium/large luxury car market. Having now experienced the car, I consider they have largely achieved their objective. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: This is one very good-looking car! It furthers Volkswagen’s refreshed design language, with the car’s front in particular highlighting the new approach. A large clamshell bonnet extends over the wings, and the front grille flows seamlessly into the headlights for a more sporting, quietly aggressive look. The side windows are frameless and the Liftback rear provides for a large very accessible boot – (563L). Revised head and tail lights with progressive running indicators combined with very sharp body creases enhance the overall appearance. The car is slightly longer, wider, and 6mm lower than the current Passat Sedan. With also a 36mm longer wheelbase really excellent legroom has been engineered into the back seat - the lift back styling still leaving satisfactory headroom. BEHIND THE WHEEL: Internally the Arteon is very similar to the Passat, which is no bad thing.
The central console is now a 9.2-inch glass fronted touch screen (similar to the latest Golf), supplemented by a 12.3-inch digital screen in front of the driver, which provides very comprehensive information. Heads up display is standard, as is front and rear parking assistance plus Area View and reversing camera. Frankly the Infotainment/Safety features are too numerous to detail, and discussion with a Sales Expert is necessary. Overall very few cars of any price range can equal these. The car is approaching being semi-autonomous.
it. It has proved to be the best car I have ever had on such a trip bettering previously owned Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Audi models overall for comfort and
The driving performance is similar to the 206Kw Passat R Line – having the same motor but a 7-speed 4WD transmission rather than the Passat’s 6 speed. Put another way, it is quicker (0 - 100km/hr in 5.6 sec) and faster (250km/hr) than a Golf GTi.
convenience. Fuel economy worked out at 6.2 - 6.4l/ per 100 Kms when driving within legal limits. The Sat Nav was very accurate, radio reception good, with handling predicable and secure.
Although it is slightly larger, improved aerodynamics and a taller top gear lowers noise levels and engine speeds while cruising. Handling is perhaps a shade better than the already good Passat – It inspires confidence. The seats are as in the Passat (best I have ever had) with a slightly lower driving position and still good visibility. The standard of finish compares favourably with the other German Marques. ROAD TRIPPING: I recently completed a 1500 km holiday trip round the North Island in
The cavernous lift back boot was excellent and the relaxing quiet cruising noise level appreciated. Ignoring snob badge valu,e a very good alternative to the other German marques. SUMMING UP: The Arteon is a classy looking (both internally and externally), very well specced car with strong performance and safe handling – backed up of course by Tristram’s first class support. Pricewise it is around 20-25% more competitive with other Europeans in its segment.

The ŠKODA Rapid has landed at Tristram European. Reviewed by Mason Kingdom – ŠKODA Sales Specialist
T he Rapid, a welcomed refresh to the well acclaimed Golf equivalent is here in New Zealand and on display and available for a Test Drive now. It’s got plenty to show for itself up against the VW flagship. Under the hood is the tried and true 1.4L turbo charged and straight injected engine, paired as usual with the lightning fast DSG gearbox. In the Sport model you’ll find a full glass roof again and a few extra bells and whistles including Apple Car play and Android Auto. Enough boot space to fit the golf clubs or a couple of chilly bins makes it the perfect sized hatch aptly labelled “Spaceback”.
The Rapid is now equipped with full LED lighting at the front and the rear as well as a distinct day time running strip that brings it to life and adds the character that SKODA always provides. Parking sensors and a super clear reverse camera make it easy to slip in to those tricky parking spots too. Starting at $27,590 it’s a steal. And as usual, the car is fully customisable at the factory to get the vehicle that fits your needs. Call us now on (09) 441 0090 or email SKODA@tristrmeuropean.co.nz

Miss Caddy Crew Reviewed by Kate Alexander
I
haven’t written about my car before… because I have never owned a brand-new car, or any car worth writing about. Now, having done both for the first time, I understand the excitement that surrounds shiny new wheels. Let me tell you why I love my new Caddy Crewvan I am an interior stylist. I run my own business “Places and Graces” from Devonport on the North Shore. My job involves a lot of moving and shifting. Sometimes it’s a full household of furniture to style a property for sale. Other days I’m collecting props for a photo-shoot or samples for a client. I am also a mum of two - Molly 8, Harry 10. My day starts with dropping my partner to the ferry and kids to school - it ends in the reverse order, often still with a car-load of props. Mindy, our three-year-old Jack Russell, is by my side all day. When I met the Tristram European team I was getting by with an old rattly van (for shifting my furniture) a small hatchback (for ferrying the kids around) and a station wagon (for long distance journeys). Each vehicle serving a singular purpose. It was time to consolidate three cars into one and finally drive a vehicle that represented my business in a professional manner. My needs list was short, but specific. I wanted a vehicle that could take me seamlessly from work life to mum life. I was after a good multi-tasker. One wheelbase to solve it all. Thanks to the good folk at Tristram European I found my solution - The Volkswagon Caddy Crewvan - long wheelbase. She has everything I wanted – and more, that
I didn’t yet know I would love (like the pull-loop for closing the boot - just what a shortie like me needs) First on the tick list - enough room for all my stuff. The Caddy Crewvan has this in spades. Good height (1240mm), decent width (1190mm) and plenty of length (1560mm) - even more with the back seats folded down. Not to mention the various extra nooks and hidden spaces for storing my camera and stylists’ toolbox. The added unexpected bonus is how useful the tie downs are. I now travel with a box of squeegees and peace of mind knowing my precious objects will arrive unscathed. Second on the tick list - space for my family. What’s particularly special about my Caddy Crewvan is her 5 seats. Two seats in the front, a bench seat in the back - folding down and forward with the pull of a tab. Passengers have a safe and comfy ride. I can fit school bags, scooters and a friend for a play-date - even with a boot full of work props. The kids enjoy the novelty of sliding doors, pop-out windows and riding in a van.
Also, worthy of a mention is the economy of fuel. I can do a whole week’s work on just one tank. While the start-stop system takes a little getting used to, it definitely helps the petrol last longer. And although I was initially planning to disconnect the parking camera, I’m now used to - and thankful for - those beeps that enable me to park and reverse with ease. Although practicality drove my car choice, my decision to drive it off the lot at Tristram European was a branddriven one. I greatly appreciate their service, knowledge, patience and general kindness… especially with an automobile novice like myself. Places and Graces is the business of interior stylist Kate Alexander. Kate believes every space has talent. Design lays the foundation, styling sets the mood. Get both right, you strike gold. For tips & tricks follow her on social, read her book, or join her ‘Date with Kate’ styling excursions which finish up at Tristram European. @placesandgraces / Places.Graces / blog.placseandgraces.com / 021 358 303
Third on the tick list - a nice drive on the open road. Part of enjoying a road trip is a smooth, quiet ride. Miss Caddy Crew is a pleasure to drive. She glides the motorway, has plenty of grunt for overtaking safely and handles the dirt roads no problem. Cruise control is handy when you hit the straights. There’s Bluetooth for handfree conversation, steering wheel controls for sound, more than enough drinks storage and super-efficient air conditioning. Kate Alexander

fter moving from overseas as a teenager, I was brought up on the North Shore and have lived locally since then. I have 2 grown up daughters, and I’m a proud grandad of 3 grandchildren. I started my Tyre career in 1988 at Frank Allen tyres in Archers Rd in Glenfield where I built retreads. My passion was in customer service, so not long after starting, I was thrust onto the forecourt serving clients and fitting tyres. After 3 years in Glenfield I was given my first branch to manage. In 2005, 16 years and 5 branches later I got my dream job in the tyre industry; I was promoted to company trainer. The role involved delivering all aspects of tyre related training from tyre technology to wheel alignments. My forte is customer service, writing training programmes on the subject. I was lucky enough to travel all over New Zealand, delivering all sorts of tyre related training. In 2014 I became a tutor for Tai Poutini Polytechnic for their tyre programme. Then in 2016 I became the company trainer for Carters Tyres for about a year, before changing fields to work for BNT parts & accessories. Kombi to California Out with the old, in with the new… It’s not every day that we trade a 1966 Volkswagen Kombi, especially one as glorious as the one the Hamilton family recently traded. Bruce and Tanya Hamilton decided it was time to farewell their beloved, immaculately restored Kombi and invest in a brand-new California Ocean. With Summer here, what better way to enjoy the New Zealand outdoors than in a brand-new camper. Hitting the beaches, taking the kids camping, heading to the Woodhill Bike Park, these are among the things that the Hamilton family love doing, and that’s just got a whole lot more fun since they purchased the California. The Kombi, originally from California, ironically enough, was purchased by Bruce and Tanya in
Exeter (South West England), they then went about restoring it to its former glory, before bringing it home to New Zealand in 2008. Tanya Hamilton said that saying goodbye to their Kombi was an emotional day, but it was easier when they got behind the wheel and drove off in their beautiful new California ocean. If you are looking to throw caution to the wind and hit the roads this summer, then come and see the team at Volkswagen Commercial and get yourself into a Volkswagen California. There is limited stock available so don’t hesitate to check one out! Also, we are very excited to let you know that the 1966 Kombi is now available for purchase after some vehicle enhancements, including Classic Roof Racks and classic White Wall Tyres. A new season – a new grade By Caleb Antonio-Rooney
A fter having a great speedway season last year, being reined the F2 Club Champion and placing 3rd in the Western Spring Series, the decision was made for me to step up to the A grade class this season.
Thanks to all of those who continue to support me, I wouldn’t be able to compete and do what I really enjoy without the support of kind businesses such as Tristram European. (Photo Credit - Jeremy @ Shot 360)
I was very pleased with my first few race meetings as this class is a big step up. My goal was to make the A main feature each meeting, as only 20 cars make it. I managed to achieve this in those meetings. We then went into the International Series which is the busiest period of the race season, this takes place over Christmas/ New Year. Over this action-packed campaign the Aussies and Americans proved to be a challenging group to compete against! Racing against drivers such as a Nascar superstar Kyle Larson and other top midget car drivers in America was incredible. I am now heading towards the New Zealand Championship title and then it’s onto the Rolling Thunder series which takes place across three tracks, Palmerston North, Baypark and Western Springs. Also during the Christmas break I got great news that I was offered a place to study Part II law at The University of Auckland, after completing my first year studying Law and Commerce (conjoint). This was something that I had worked hard for over the last year to achieve as the selection process is demanding.

SANDPIT MOTOR PARK
Double Anniversary Time - 10 Years Young Written by Tony Beuth
IinnWoodhill August 2017 The Sandpit Motor Park based forest celebrated its 10th year in operation. Coincidently, Tristram European also celebrated its Diamond anniversary as well. Off Road Motorcycling goes way back beyond ten years however, in fact the off-road scene in the early 70’s was booming. Sales on motorbikes in 1973 was 40% more than sales in 2016, an unbelievable statistic. This led to a massive demand (for all the adventure junkies on “new” technology) for legal places to ride. Well, where else but Woodhill forest, which was already the domain for illegal and unauthorised activity. The forest was then owned by the NZ Forest Service and it took a few years lobbying to local, central and finally national government by 3 very enthusiastic young men (John Nick, Barry Reihier, Tjebbie Bruin) to gain partial access for the formation of a legal area to ride, albeit with plenty of restrictions. In fact stapling a directional arrow to a tree was a big NO NO. Therefore volunteers spent many hours ramming in pegs for riders to follow.
The current owner (Tony Beuth) was concerned about the state of the facility as there was a very real possibility that access to Woodhill forest for motorbike riding was going to be curtailed permanently. So, a concerted effort was made to secure a long-term lease that would eventually allow Tony to give up his day job and turn Woodhill into a mecca of trails to meet the demand. However, nobody could foresee the Share Market crash of 2007 and sales of off road bikes plummeted by 60% over the next few years. Rider numbers also dwindled from 24,000 per year to 12,000 in 2011. Sandpit Motor Park weathered the storm and the forecast is looking good mainly thanks to a great support network of volunteers and sponsors.

So, a big “Thank You” and an even bigger “Congratulations” to Tristram European for your success over the roller coaster ride of ten years. May the next ten years be just as exciting.
This trio then set up Waitemata Motorcycle club (the oldest motorcycle club in the country) and consequently opened a riding facility in the forest for weekend riders. Since then an off-road motorbike park has been operating spasmodically and periodically until July 2007.
