End of Module Student Evaluation BA (Hons) Illustration Module Code: OUIL501 Context of Practice Name: Ben Farr Student ID: bf259382 Please identify where the evidence for each of the learning outcomes is within your submission and how well you feel you have met the learning outcomes. Please also grade yourself in relation to the learning outcomes using terms: poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent (Note - This is so that the team have an understanding of how well you feel you have done. It is not an indication of the actual grade you may receive.) Learning Outcome

Evidenced where? Blog, Visual Journal, Roughs, Final Illustrations, Storyboards, Development Sheets etc. (No more than 75 words)

Your grade Using words: > poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent

5A1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, historical, technological, social, political or other contexts relevant to individual subject disciplines. (Knowledge and understanding) (Research / critical awareness)

This has been evidenced on my blog, especially at the start of the module when researched helped me to establish my subject area. My critical understanding can be seen in the study tasks on my blog. I also researched into existing advertising as well as historical examples as case studies. The social impact of advertising formed the basis for my essay.

Good

5A2 Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between the theoretical and practical contexts of their own creative concerns. (Knowledge and understanding) (problem analysis/definition)

The connections between my essay question and the visual journal are can be found in my practical development and experiments. I had to use problem solving skills to find the most effective and powerful way of making images in order to get my point across.

Good

5B1 Evidence the ability to use logic, reasoning and critical judgement to analyse ideas from a range of primary and secondary sources. (Cognitive skills) (Critical awareness)

Evidence of this can be found on my blog, in posts about the research I undertook. It is also evidenced within my essay and in my bibliography, where I have documented the range of sources that helped inform my written and practical work. Within my essay and visual journal, I’ve compared and triangulated sources from books and essays, newspaper articles, websites as well as looking at examples of advertising both images and videos.

Good

5C1 Evidence the capacity for undertaking practical and theoretical research that demonstrates an informed application of critical, effective and testable processes.

This can be found in my visual journal, where I have continually experimented with different image making techniques to find ways of making evocative images. Also evidenced in my essay is the range of theoretical research I’ve done in order to form points and develop arguments.

Very Good

(Practical and professional skills) (research)

5D1 Organise and carry out selfdirected projects and communicate outcomes through written and other appropriate forms. (Key transferable skills) (professionalism / technical competence / visual quality)

This is evidenced in my essay as well as my visual journal and my COP 3 proposal. In my visual journal there is a range of different self-initiated image making skills that I’ve developed. And the learning and investigation that happened at the culmination of essay and journal allowed me to write what is hopefully a professional and thoughtful COP 3 proposal.

Very Good

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document and post the PDF as your final post on your OUIL501 blog. At the beginning of context of practice this year I was a bit lost. I missed the structure of having a pre-written essay title from last year. Last year I looked at constructivism which had a good range of visual and contextual material to work from. However, I didn’t want to continue with my research topic from last year as I found it a bit boring, also I feel I exhausted my line of enquiry with the subject matter. Moving on to find a new topic this year meant I was a bit slow getting started. After the initial tasks I was able to narrow down what I wanted to look. I knew I wanted to do something to do with sport. Although I think at times this dominated my thinking a bit too much and prevented me from thinking about other possible subject matters. Once I had decided on my topic of sports advertising I managed to carry out quite a bit of initial research because it is a topic I have good knowledge of. The early study tasks on image analysis and especially triangulation helped develop my skills as a writer. They helped to better dissect a piece of writing and I feel my final essay was much better as a result of this. Although I wasn’t happy with the draft submission of my essay. I felt the subject got a bit muddled. I think I was trying to look at and combine too many subject areas, advertising, sport and gender. I tried to look in depth at all of them this left my draft a bit muddled and meant that I lost momentum a bit in the middle of the module. Although I was looking at the same subject areas in my final essay submission I managed to change the emphasis slightly. Doing this helped to make it more refined and focused. Between the draft submission and now I’ve undertaken a lot more research into more credible and established source material like Laura Mulvey and Vance Packard. I think the range of different research coupled with the focus on strong theoretical sources helped build the structure of a better essay. I’m not happy with my time management on this module. I was really slow to get started and this impacted on the strength of my submission. Once I got going I feel I worked well on cop this year both in the strength of my final essay and my visual journal. Where my time management let me down is on my blog. There is good evidence of the development and synthesis between visual and written work both in my visual journal and in my reflective writing section of my essay. But I could have shown this a lot more on my blog, I’m disappointed that this doesn’t come across as strongly as I would have liked on my blog. I’m pleased with the range of visual development in my journal. I think I’ve explored a good range of different approaches to image making and found some new techniques that I will carry forward into other modules. I think I demonstrated my craft skills well in my drawing and painting. But I’m most pleased with my collage work. Collage has always been something I’ve avoided because I didn’t think was very good at it, and was never happy with the end products. However, in my visual journal I think collage has been especially effective and some of the strongest and most evocative images are collaged.

All the work I’ve done this year, bringing together the different reference materials that I looked at helped write a cop three proposal that I’m pleased with. The culmination of essay and journal allowed me to make what is hopefully a professional and thoughtful COP 3 proposal.

Evaluation Guidance This should be a reflective summary of your experience across the module. -

How did it go? Where did your journey start, where did it end? I knew very little at the start of this module. At the end of the module I feel that…

-

What learning took place? What was useful to you? Be specific. New skills? New methods? New processes or approaches? Did you use the blog to reflect on your project development?

-

What went well and why? What did you enjoy? What were you happy with as an outcome? Be critical and analytical. Why did you enjoy it? Perhaps identify particular sessions? This could be ideas, solutions to problems, studentship or research. How well did you use the studio? Did you invest enough time in the development and testing of your outcomes?

-

What could you have done better? What were the problems you faced? What did you do to try to overcome them? This could be in reference to studentship, organization or blogging as much as studio practice.

-

How can you apply what you have learned here for future modules and projects? Application and future thinking. Things you would do differently next time? What useful methods, processes and ideas will you take forward into the next module?

You may also want to consider: Self-questioning: How did your thoughts and opinions change as you progressed through the module? Feedback: What other people (tutors and peers) thought of work and how you responded to that feedback?

Research: Did you use contextual research to inform your ideas, ways of thinking or understanding of the challenges set. This may include further research of your subject matter, slides from the presentations or use of the library.
