End of Module Student Evaluation BA (Hons) Illustration Module Code: OUIL504 Illustration 1: Production & Presentation Name: Student ID: Please identify where the evidence for each of the learning outcomes is within your submission and how well you feel you have met the learning outcomes. Please also grade yourself in relation to the learning outcomes using terms: > poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent (Note- This is so that the team have an understanding of how well you feel you have done. It is not an indication of the actual grade you may receive.) Learning Outcome
Evidenced where? Blog, Visual Journal, Roughs, Final Illustrations, Stings, storyboards, development sheets etc. (No more than 75 words)
5A5: Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to image, media, format and context through the delivery of solutions to identified visual problems. (Knowledge & Understanding - Critical Awareness)
I tackle visual problems through roughing evidenced in my visual journal and on my blog. In my roughs I’ve experimented with different colour palettes and compositions in order to get final images that I’m pleased with. My research into my author, which is posted on my blog, helped inform my image making process and fed the subject matter and narrative.
5A6: Understand the potential and limitations of a range of processes, technologies and techniques involved in the development and production of work for print and screen based delivery. (Knowledge & Understanding Research)
I worked mainly digitally during the first study task and Studio Brief 1, showing my work on my blog. I could have posted more progress shots. I tried all the different print techniques, and decided which best suited my publication. During Studio Brief I demonstrated an understanding of print processes both in my roughs in my visual journal and my final prints and book.
5B4: Analyse and critically evaluate primary/secondary source material to inform the development and contextualisation of ideas, concepts and products through individual responses to set briefs. (Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
I have evidenced my research on my blog. My understanding of my Author shows in my final outcomes. I’ve read a couple of Highsmith novels and blogged about articles which I found incisive. These helped me build a sense my author as a person which fed into the narrative of my finals for studio briefs 2 and 3. Research into other illustrators helped refine my approach to using printed images in my book.

decision making for my finals for studio briefs 2 and 3. I’ve shown this in my print inductions and use of different print methods for my final publication. Using Photoshop to compose my book and after effects for moving image demonstrated in my final outcomes and documented on my blog.
5C5: Identify, evaluate and apply practical/technical processes, materials and media in order to produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
I think this is demonstrated by the final print of my book and my final stings, posted to my blog. I identified which print methods would work best for me and my book, this can be seen by looking at my prints and my blog. My research into the Author was key in getting the emotional content into my final book for Studio brief 2.
5D4: Demonstrate the ability to communicate the development and resolution of ideas through appropriate visual and written presentation of work. (Key Transferable Skills Presentation and Evaluation)
My evaluation of my work can be seen through the experimentation with different media in my Good sketchbook and different prints. Also my blog posts reflecting on my work and ongoing practice. Presentation of my work can be seen on my blog as well as my final submission, I feel the professionalism of my presentation has improved over this module.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work and post the PDF as your final post on your OUIL504 blog. At the start of this Module I was slightly daunted by the task ahead. I’m not an avid reader, other than the sports pages so studying an author and really getting under the skin of an author was a challenge. By the end of the module I’ve surprised myself and feel proud of what I’ve achieved. Roughing in my visual journal during studio brief 1 was a really useful tool, at times it felt like overkill with the roughs, but I think this led to the final outcomes being well composed and thought out. I wasn’t happy with the final outcomes aesthetically though. Looking back I would change them a lot, but maybe that shows how far I’ve progressed during this module. Also the influence of using print in my work and looking at other practitioners for the study tasks like Robert F Hunter, Keith Negley and Curt Melo has changed what I want my work to look like. I knew we would have to use print at some point during this module, and from last year I knew that print methods were not my favourite. This lead to me being reluctant to throw myself into printing and stalled my progress during the first part of Studio Brief 2. I like working in my own space, so the print room ins’t my ideal working space. I did all the print inductions and actually found the end results were better than I had anticipated. I managed to get some decent prints out of the screen print induction. I also discovered Mono printing and monotype. We had done a small amount of this last year, but this year I came to really appreciate the effect of using this kind of printing in my work. By experimenting with all the print methods it helped me find the best aesthetic for my final publication. Peer
feedback was really useful in helping me stay positive about printing and ultimately decide on the combination of lino and monotype for my book. I think moving forward I’ll continue combining shape based imagery with texture as I have done in this Studio brief. I think it makes my work more engaging and I really like the balance of shape and texture, especially when using monotype. I think a turning in this module was during Studio Brief 2 when I changed to look more personally at my author. Researching more into Patricia Highsmith as a person through newspaper and online articles. This was where I found the most interesting and heart-felt material for my narrative in Studio Brief 2 and then leading onto Studio Brief 3. I think the end result of my book looks professional and looking back at the start of this module I didn’t think I could have achieved this, especially using as many print methods as I have. In composing my book I refined my digital skills and learned a few new techniques like the colour range selection tool. I think my colour choices and use of end pages and title pages help give the publication a more professional feel. It was also my first time using After Effects, I only really got to grips with the basics, but I’m pleased with the outcomes. I think its realty exciting to see my illustrations move and come to life. Using storyboards was also new this module and I think they really helped in making the stings a smooth process. The Fred sessions on understanding how to make effective storyboards helped me make final storyboards that were easy to follow and execute in after effects. I think the final stings look pretty professional and especially stings 2 and 3, where I used a camera layer to move the frame. Thinking about sound was also a new consideration. As an illustrator sound wasn’t something I’d had to think about before. I actually really enjoyed the challenge and think the sound I’ve chosen adds a lot to the final outcomes. Time management is always a problem for me. I almost never do work as soon as it’s set which leaves me playing catch up and working up to the deadline. I think this then impacts on my work. At the start of Studio Brief 2 I was reluctant to print, which lead to me doing the majority of the final prints for my book at home rather than in the print room. Although I don’t think this impacted majorly on the final outcome, it probably wasn’t the best practice. I also need to make sure I stay on top of my blog, when I was blogging regularly and as I went along I found it was useful in helping me clarify my direction.
