End of Module Student Evaluation BA (Hons) Illustration Module Code: OUIL505 Illustration 2: Applied Illustration Name: Ben Farr Student ID: 259382 Please identify where the evidence for each of the learning outcomes is within your submission and how well you feel you have met the learning outcomes. Please also grade yourself in relation to the learning outcomes using terms: poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent (Note- This is so that the team have an understanding of how well you feel you have done. It is not an indication of the actual grade you may receive.) Learning Outcome

5A7: Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to media, communication, audience and context through the delivery of solutions to brief led problems or clearly identified creative concerns. (Knowledge & Understanding - Critical Awareness)

Evidence of this can be found on my blog and on my design boards and project report. At the start of the brief I researched legends and fairy tales, reading some of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. As well as looking a film adaptations. I conducted primary research by going into Waterstones to see what fairy tale books were on display in the children’s section. I researched existing picture books, looking at Flying Eye books.

Very Good

5A8: Understand the potential and limitations of technologies and processes used in the production of illustration for 2d, 3d and/or 4d distribution. (Knowledge & Understanding Research)

I have shown this in my project report and design Good boards, which are also on my blog. I have produced my final illustrations digitally which allows me to edit them more easily. I have also considered the potential distribution and retailers for my book as well mocking-up an ipad ebook version.

5B5: Analyse and critically evaluate the impact of social, cultural, technological and/or ethical concerns on the development of solutions to problems relevant to individual creative concerns. Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)

My blog documents my decision making throughout the module. My sketchbook also shows how I have worked out problems through doing roughs. Hopefully I have overcome the problem of people being disinterested in football, by adding another layer of intrigue to the concept

Good

5C6: Explore and apply a range of appropriate practical and conceptual approaches to self-determined ideas, concepts, solutions/proposals in

Roughing has become an increasingly important part of my practice, the evidence of my visual development, experimenting with composition and concepts and can be found in my sketchbook, with the transformative moments documented on my blog.

response to own identified intentions and relevant practices. (Practical Skills Practical and Conceptual Development) 5C7: Produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes to identified problems through the selection and application of visual skills. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)

I produced the final outcomes using a mixture of Excellent scanned textures and Photoshop brushes. I feel that the six outcomes and accompanying sketchbook and mock-ups demonstrate my technical competence. I’m proud of the end results I think they are engaging and fun as well as looking professional.

5D5: Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out a period of increasingly self-directed study through the appropriate use of workshop areas, studio activities and project management skills. (Key Transferable Skills Presentation and Evaluation)

Time management isn’t always my strong point, but I feel I styed on top of work a lot better in this module. I blogged my thoughts and progress regularly and produced the six final outcomes.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work. Also please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL505 Project Report. At the start of this module I was fairly sure that I would produce a promotional campaign for a sporting event. The direction I ended up going in is a very different tone from my previous work, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the process. During 504 I found combining an aesthetic that I really responded to in combining texture and shape, this was something I wanted to carry forward into 505. However the tone of the work in 504 was very serious and a bit depressing, which I didn’t enjoy, especially on the research side. This made me decide to try and achieve a different tone in my work. I wanted to make illustrations that were more playful and humorous. In my spare time I enjoy drawing caricatures of footballers, and therefore I thought It would be great to do a project that incorporated that. The idea for my project came from a play on words using the duel connotations of the word legend. Instead of sporting legend, I decided to portray premier league footballers as characters from legends and fairy tales. As soon as I had this idea I felt it was strong and seemed original. I had really good initial feedback on the concept and felt really motivated making work that I was passionate about. I didn’t need to do very much research into the football side of my subject matter, because I already know a nerdy amount about football. My research into fairytales and legends lead me to reading some of the Hans Christian Anderson and Brothers Grimm fairy tales. I also looked at film adaptations that play with the idea of fairy tales, like Tangled and Shrek. I did some primary research by going into Waterstones and looking at the books they had in the children’s section. There appears to be a big trend in stories based on fairy-tales at the moment. Fairy-tale stories seem to be increasingly popular tied in with the current trend in Disney's fairy-tale film remakes, most recently: Beauty and the Beast. I looked at a number of book covers as inspiration for my

project. I did further research into practitioners like Keith Negley and Robert F. Hunter who have done children’s books. I’ve not made a book with words so it was really useful seeing how they compose their pages, when they decide to use full bleed images and where they place the text. I have really enjoyed doing this project and I think this shows in the amount of work I’ve done in my sketchbook. I’ve done a lot more work than in other modules, because I’m enjoying drawing. I’ve felt very motivated working on a subject matter that I'm passionate about. Also through drawing I think I'm beginning to develop an aesthetic that is my own. Working on the characters in my roughs helped me to refine them, capturing the likeness, but also adding humour and fun, I think the end results have a lot of personality. I’m really pleased with the final outcomes. I produced them fairy quickly using gouache Photoshop brushes as well a some scanned textures, I find this is becoming my natural way of working and I like the flexibility that working digitally gives me. The work has been well received in feedback sessions, which I’m glad about because I wasn’t sure how my peers would respond to work about football. The fact that the humour comes across and they are engaging with the narrative of each illustration without necessarily liking football is really pleasing. Making mock-ups has been really useful for seeing how my work would look in a professional context, and has also made me consider the number of applications for my work. I’ve also been considering the digital side of my output and made a mock-up of an e-book to show a potential form of publication. With more time I would have liked to make gifs of my outcomes, so that the players move I think this could be an exciting direction to have animated bits in an e-book. I worked a lot better at the start of this module so it hasn’t been a complete mad rush at the end. Although I probably focused too much on producing roughs, when only six outcomes were required. I could have spent more time experimenting with media or considering further applications for the illustrations. In a way I’m pleased that I drew so much, It meant that I developed and aesthetic and refined the characters and compositions. I want to finish this book at some point in the future. Ben Jones has suggested that it could be something to think about next year. Another thing Ben suggested was to make books about one specific team. I wanted to look at all the teams to make the book a bit more inclusive and not tribal, although focusing on one team might make it easier to market towards an individual team’s club shop.
