OUIL503: RESPONSIVE N E W S TAT E S M A N S S - G B B R I E F
RESEARCH My first idea for this brief was to incorporate iconic London landmarks with Nazi iconography - similar to the images I’ve seen from the Man in the High Castle. I also looked at existing book covers for SSGB as well as stills that have been released from the upcoming BBC drama for potential inspiration.
H O U S E S O F PA R L I A M E N T These are my first roughs for this brief. I tried to play with the idea of distorting something that is iconically British. Although I wasn’t happy with this idea, because I felt that using Big Ben & the Houses of parliament was a bit clichÊd.
S T. PA U L S I started to explore other landmarks that would still signify London and Britain. I thought that St. Pauls could work well with red banners inbetween the iconic pillars.
I love to include portraiture in my work. Sam riley, the star of the BBC’s version of SS-GB, has a really interesting face to draw and caricaturise. I thought including this straight on portrait could add drama and immediacy to my illustration.
FINAL ROUGHS I decided to combine the portrait with and the image of St. Pauls. I didn't have loads of time to refine this illustration and re-work the composition. Looking back there are things that I would change to make the composition more interesting and balanced.
