Designing the Cloud / Cr-48 / Google
CHROMIUM OS
CR-48
CLOUDcomputing
After three and a half years of money spent, blood shed, sweat worked, and tears fell, I’m here. I have played with print, understood type, sequenced, recoded, encoded, processed, and have a basic handle on motion and interactive. This was all achieved through using my hands and my favorite tool, my Mac. For my thesis, I am taking a risk. I will not use my beloved Mac. Over the past month I have been researching and learning about Google’s pilot program for the new Chrome Cr-48 notebook. There is a select few of them and I finally heard back from Google. No less than 48 hrs ago I received a phone call from Amy at Google. She spoke with enthusiasm about my thesis; I was told Google is excited to see what comes of it, this was a highlight for me, and a dream come true. (possibly a job). They are interested to see how I develop design methods, processes, and over all finished work with the prototype notebook. This of course won’t be easy, I will not have access to my Adobe software. I will basically be designing within the browser, this isn’t a limited OS though, Chrome now has HTML 5 photo editing, vector making, and other apps. They are very adobe like, but still, this will be an interesting process. I will still use indesign for my “process book”, I believe that is fair.
Hi Ben, Thanks for your interest in participating in the Chrome notebook Pilot program. As part of the program we do have a limited number of devices to share with the press and we’d love to get a device in your hands so you can try it out. The only catch is that it’s technically not a “review” device in the traditional sense of the word. As we mentioned in the announcement, this is a test device that we’re sharing with a small set of people so we can get feedback on the project. With regard to next steps, we just need your shipping address and we can get one out to you in the next few days. Just click over to this form, and fill out your address there: https://spreadsheets. google.com/a/google.com/viewform?formkey=d Dd6QzBMU18yNVpNTlcwT0diYjk5cXc6MQ You’re welcome to keep it or, if policy requires, we’d be happy to loan it to you. Just let us know what works best for you. Also, if you have any questions about Chrome notebook, you can check out the press site, which is here: https://sites.google.com/a/pressatgoogle. com/chromepress/. Thanks, Annie

DESIGN THE CLOUD Senior Design Thesis January 18, 2011 at 11:58am I have yet to receive my new notebook from google… but it was shipped today, I really want to get my hands on it. I understand that this could be difficult, as I will be reworking my old process to fit a new platform. Although this is true I know I work best by playing, and understanding through play. So I will of course take that approach. I will play with the programs and blog about my findings once I feel more comfortable I will start on more refined works. To my knowledge this has never been done, seeing as it is a prototype and they are not on the market. I truly believe this can become a successful project, some of my best work as come from trying something different and new (to me). I will need help of course. I still need to sit down with you and see what you think. I understand this isn’t a traditional thesis, but I believe that is exciting. As far as my calender goes, I will be using Google Calendar, it just makes sense to use Google software when possible on their new platform. I am also told I must report my findings to Google, this will also take root within my thesis, though I am not sure how it will function yet.

As far as content, I am a little lost, I believe receiving the machine was a difficult enough; I have brainstormed though. I took a trip to Mexico for ten days at the end of the semester with my best friend, we lived like the locals. The fact that Kyle had lived in Mexico for 6 months last year gave me the opportunity to really experience the culture. I believe it will have an influence in the content and over all projects. But this is really a test, a test of a new device by a graphic designer, the tools I will be using are tools anyone can use, they are free, and very easy to find online. As much as I love my Mac and all of the powerful programs, I am excited to see what I can achieve with bare bones cloud computing of the “future”.

[ test_01.egg on Aviary ] Got the notebook, made… “something” This is just one of the many Aviary programs available, I made it on the Cr-48, which took longer than expected… this would be done in a matter of seconds on Illustrator. I am second guessing this thesis (it will be incredibly frustrating), but lets see where it takes me.
It has really took me about 5min to make a frustrated little cloud, I need to find other web based programs to create imagery. I am a bit worried about using this Chrome Cr-48 to create my thesis, its not as easy as I had anticipated, though it is rewarding to think, “wow… Adobe and Apple, you may have designers (that use a computer) by the balls, but you’re so damn good at it.” I have also been testing the ports on the computer, the AVI port didn’t seem to work when I hooked it up, I will have to figure this out for presentations. As far as “why” I am doing this… it’s hard to say, I like a challenge. Adobe programs have treated me well, and so has my “by hand” work. This space for me is new, it is a cloud space, everything I design is online with this machine. (There is no way around it unless you jail break the device). I see a glimpse of the possible future for cloud computing, but maybe a step back for computer aided design with in that cloud… (its only the first day, I am free to change my mind about that…)

I COULDN’T POSSIBLY USE A CHROME NOTEBOOK AS MY PRIMARY COMPUTER, LET ALONE AS MY SOLE COMPUTER. I NEED A PC TO RUN THE PROGRAMS I USE FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND GRAPHIC DESIGN… — http://digitaljetpack.com/401
January 21, 2011 at 1:10pm The Cr-48 has potential to be an amazing netbook, and even then I have run into some problems, YouTube videos can’t go above 480p, the sound… oh god the sound, if for some reason you find a great song or video, look it up on your handy Cr-48 the sound may crap out on you; giving you an ear full of nails on a chalk board screeching and buzzing… Pandora never sounded so… glitched. “But Ben, what does this have to do with your thesis…” well glad you asked, I am in need of content for what I make. I need a Concept + Content + Application, and they should all be harmonious and what not. I am thinking of working with the idea that things go wrong, and expecting them to go wrong, documenting them, maybe why people believe thing go wrong… I am still working it out, the whole design in the cloud will be a one off. He designed on a protoype computer… ok. Big deal, the Cr-48 was not ment for that use (which is interesting, but not to me.) I believe although it is an interesting thought and look into the future of design the technology is just not there yet. Its latent and makes me frustrated to tears. (I couldn’t use the back space in my flash vector editor the other day…) I will play with this beast for another week as a designer, see what can be made… then it will just be a net-book to me, and if your just checking Facebook, email, or looking at blogs etc. its a damn fine computer, light weight and has 3g capably. Wish me luck.

January 25, 2011 at 3:18pm “I’m also pretty sure — though I’m hedging a bit — that I can rely on Aviary’s image editors as a suitable replacement for Skitch and (in some cases) Photoshop. Image editing in general feels weird on Chrome OS because I’m so used to tossing around these files locally. And Aviary’s apps can be a little disorienting because you’re thrown into another window, then have to deal with various sharing options to actually get the image you just edited. I believe you can save content to the computer’s disk, but the file manager doesn’t seem done yet.” “The keyboard is full-sized and feels a lot like the ones found on modern Apple computers. The mouse trackpad — or at least, the software running the trackpad — is a complete turd. It works well enough for basic pointing and clicking, but anything beyond that has issues. The ‘right click’ feature, which involves tapping two fingers on the trackpad, only seems to register around ⅔ of the time. Trying to select text or drag anything anywhere is an exercise in frustration.”
“Still, right now, I’d say the Chrome notebook is mostly like an iPad with a full-sized keyboard attached. I find the iPad limiting. It’s mainly, to me, a consumption device. I can read, I can do email, I can use some specialized apps — but it could never replace my regular computer. I know some have done so, and more power to them. I tried going iPad-only once. The inability to save files locally, or really feel I could work well offline, made that a short-lived experiment.” — http://techcrunch.com/2010/12/10/chrome-osreview/ http://searchengineland.com/first-day-reviewthe-google-chrome-os-cr-48-notebook-58322
January 25, 2011 at 3:27pm Thesis and making sense of it all‌ I receive the Cr-48 the same day I got sick, that was a bad sign, It has almost been a week with the cloud and I am missing my Mac, I find my self saying. Well yes, you can design on it, but it takes quite a bit longer, and then after you have proven it is possible to create a some what decent design, whats the point? Why continue to use a screwdriver when you have a power drill? I am not out to prove I can make finished design on the Cr-48, I already know I can; its frustrating and slow (the track pad is well, clunky at best.) What I need is content, and if its worth my time to push forward with this for a thesis, I will of course continue testing the computer and its limitations, thats actually fun as a side project‌ I need a new direction. Something fun, something that allows the content and meaning to blend. And I am still trying to figure that out.

1. I will examine new design processes to create building blocks to remix with more familiar methods of design. Create through playing; the content would be dealing with the processes themselves, knowing that things go wrong, and expecting them too.
