WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer’s notion for perspectival projection stated that all perpendicular or orthogonal lines meet at the central vanishing point, which is determined by the perpendicular drawn from the eye to the picture plane. Secondly, all parallel lines, regardless of direction, have a common vanishing point. If they lie on the horizontal axis, then their vanishing point is situated on the horizon. Furthermore if they form a 45 degree angle with the picture plane, then the distance between their vanishing point and the central vanishing point is the same as the distance between the eye and the picture plane. Thirdly, equal lengths reduce progressively as they receede into the space, so that any area of the picture is calculable.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

All the joining elements or points within homogenous space are determinations of position, posessing no independent content of their own outside of this relation. It is purely a functional and not substantial reality. The homogeneity merely a similarity of function, grounded in their logical function. Hence homogenous space is never given space, but space produced through construction. The key concept is that from every point in space it must be possible to draw similar figures in all directions.

Perspective 2 Leaves Tamara reflecting on encountering, yet focusing on the future - greater sense of enlightenment, perhaps optimism

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Introspective view Reveals the distortion of signs and symbols within the city of Tamara, reflecting a sense of tension and confusion as to what meaning lies beneath the surface

Extrospective view. Leaves the city with no greater level of understanding, objects repeat themselves, yet alleviated shadows seek to suggest progression

WEEK 4 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic- arts such as painting or sculpture that require the direct contact of the creator to create authenticity Allographic - arts such as music, poetry or theatre, where work can exist in many copies and can be produced without the direct intervention of the author. Capable of being reproduced in absense of the author through notation. Operate through interpretation and on basis of convention, producing new realities

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Architecture is neither clearly allographic or autographic. The end product of architecture is not ophermal, and the accepted use of notational language was developed in response to the need for many hands in construction. Hence, as a real world object, the meaning of a structure is more clearly disconnected from the its author than the work of sculptor or musician for example

APPENDIX

Imagery of rocks extracted from old polychrome postcartds with oversaturated colours, implying notion of untruthful representation and false memories Classicality and grandeur of statues distorted through a cheap VHS- like effect, creating a sense of juxtaposition as well as an unclear level of meaning/significance/integrity

Exerpts of text used to create worded instructions for Marco Polo, layed out like a book yet lacking sensical meaning.

Absurd signpost, repeated words, creating the sense of a dystopian city DWG images arranged within quad.
