At Wandsworth Chamber, we took our usual event break in August, providing us with valuable time to plan and prepare for the busy months ahead, particularly focusing on our event schedule for the remainder of the year. The period from September to December is often the most active time for businesses, and the same is true for us.

Our packed events calendar reflects this, and we encourage you to take full advantage of the networking opportunities that these events will offer.

On another note, as we mark Sustainability September, it's essential to recognise that sustainability in business is more than just a month-long focus—it's a year-round commitment. For businesses in Wandsworth and beyond, integrating sustainable practices is no longer optional; it's a necessity for long-term success. From reducing carbon footprints to embracing circular economy principles, sustainability not only helps protect the environment but also drives innovation, efficiency, and customer loyalty. Finally, as we look toward the 30th of October, businesses in Wandsworth and across the UK are anticipating the new government's first Budget with a mix of concern and optimism. With elevated public debt, a high tax burden, and pressures on public services,

Chancellor Rachel Reeves will be tasked with making difficult decisions to address the fiscal challenges ahead. There is widespread speculation about potential changes to capital gains tax, business rates, and inheritance tax, as well as targeted measures aimed at bolstering productivity and economic growth. While tax increases and spending cuts may raise concerns about business costs and consumer confidence, there is hope that the Budget will also include measures to support long-term economic resilience. The government's emphasis on growth and productivity will hopefully offer a more positive outlook, particularly if it can balance the need for fiscal responsibility with policies that foster business innovation and investment. For businesses, navigating these changes will require a proactive approach, ensuring they remain agile and prepared for the opportunities and challenges that may arise from the Budget. This financial turning point, while uncertain, could set the foundation for a more sustainable and growth-driven future, provided that the right balance is struck. I’m certainly hoping this will be the case.

In March 2024 Wandsworth was named the Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture 2025. This means Wandsworth Council will receive funding towards staging an fun and inspirational programme of arts and culture over the year to entertain our residents and attract visitors from across London and beyond, putting Wandsworth on the map. Wandsworth beat competition from several other councils across London to be crowned London Borough of Culture thanks to a fantastic bid and its thriving arts and culture community.

The council, working with partners and local communities, is now preparing to deliver a joyful year where every corner of the borough comes alive in an explosion of creativity. From Roehampton to Battersea, Putney to Tooting, they are getting ready to stage a spectacular year of arts and culture.

Known for its vibrant and diverse communities, the borough has a proud cultural history as home to Battersea Arts Centre, Battersea Power Station, Tooting Market, the Clapham Grand, the Royal Academy of Dance and much more.

Our cultural programme is being created with local people and organisations and will be announced in January. Many of the events are free for everyone and there will be a spectacular dance event, a mass choral get together and

much more where residents and visitors will come together to share experiences.

By connecting us, our year has the power to supercharge our health and happiness. It will open doors for our residents and help young people find creative careers. It will be a catalyst for change, so that creativity is recognised for improving our health.

We want our local businesses to be a part of the year so please spread the word to friends, family and employees. There will be many opportunities to participate or even be a volunteer. Culture is thriving in Wandsworth

Wandsworth’s year as London Borough of Culture begins in April 2025, but if you can’t wait till then to explore everything the borough has to offer then there's loads to discover between now and April.

Kicking off in September, Wandsworth celebrates Black History 365 with a year-round cultural programme featuring creative workshops, dance performances, children’s theatre, music and heritage events, happening all over the borough.

Discover a world-class autumn season at Battersea Arts Centre, as they celebrate their 50th birthday in style. Be the first to see brand new plays and develop your own playwriting skills with Theatre 503, and keep an eye out for what’s coming up at Tara Theatre, an official Theatre of Sanctuary and the UK’s only theatre focusing exclusively on South Asian artists and stories. Catch an irreverent musical – or a very grown-up panto – at the Turbine Theatre, or have a Big Night Out at Clapham Grand, Wandsworth’s last Victorian music hall, now a contemporary ‘palace of varieties’ with a packed line-up of comedy, drag, music and more.

Wandsworth is welcoming accessible performance pioneers Blink Dance Theatre to the borough as they take up residency in their new home in New Mansion Square, North Battersea, at the end of the year. (You can catch their new show, a collaboration with internationally acclaimed young hip hop theatre performers, BAC Beatbox Academy, at BAC in October!)

Cutting edge contemporary art gallery Matt’s Gallery presents Turner Prize nominee Willie Doherty this Autumn, and take a peek inside the studios and home of Wandsworth’s painters, sculptors, potters and crafters with Wandsworth

Artist’ Open House free art trails, happening across the first two weekends of October.

The EFG London Jazz Festival takes over World Heart Beat Embassy in November, alongside an autumn season of jazz, folk, classical and world music. There’s more live music line-ups across the borough – check out the ever-popular Half Moon in Putney and The Bedford in Balham for rock, indie and singer-songwriters.

Finally, the iconic Battersea Park Fireworks will be returning with a bang in November, and we can look ahead to another sparkling festival of light sculptures this winter, lighting up the riverfront and Battersea Power Station in January 2025.

Wandsworth: home to culture

Some of the country’s most prestigious cultural institutions are in Wandsworth. These include the National Opera Studio, the Royal College of Art, the Royal Academy of Dance, London Children’s Ballet, Tavaziva Dance and Matt’s Gallery. Wandsworth is home to a wealth of talented artists and makers, as well as an impressive list of organisations who work closely with their communities to open up access to cultural experiences - including Oily Cart, Sound Minds and World Heart Beat Music Academy.

The borough’s thriving theatre scene includes Battersea Arts Centre, Putney Arts Theatre, Tara Theatre, The Turbine Theatre and Theatre 503, whilst the annual Wandsworth Arts Fringe festival (WAF) in June brings together more than 140 events, performances and productions in over 40 venues across Wandsworth.

Wandsworth’s parks and public spaces are home to artworks by the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Robert Clatworthy and Simon Periton, and every summer the Wandsworth Heritage Festival celebrates the rich cultural and social history of the borough.

Re:Create Wandsworth is Wandsworth Council’s bespoke business support programme for creative businesses, delivered in partnership with Creative United. Wandsworth-based creative and cultural businesses, artists and makers can access this business skills e-learning course, featuring four modules covering Marketing and E-Commerce, Funding, Business Resilience, and Team Building. This has been the ethos of my company, RMJ Wellbeing which this month is celebrating its 5th year. The business has flourished, and we are a multi award winning organisation, after receiving several awards in recognition of the work we deliver.

Over the years I have expanded the business to other areas of health and wellbeing by introducing Retreats, Coaching, Guest Speaking and Podcasts, and also by writing my autobiography ‘Brown & Proud’, in recognition of my upbringing. We also now have a furry new addition to our team. TJ, a Battersea Rescue has been assessed and is now our Therapy dog. She is available for Therapy and Coaching sessions if required.

The most rewarding aspect of my job is to watch those who reach out and come to me broken, and within a few sessions I watch them flourish to the point where they have the belief that there is hope and that they can live the life they have always longed for.

Battersea Power Station welcomes Global marketing group

Battersea Power Station is delighted to announce that Global marketing group, TEAM LEWIS, have leased the entire top floor of 50 Electric Boulevard, the new Foster + Partners designed office space.

Relocating from Millbank Tower in Westminster, the 10,500 sq ft Battersea Power Station office will become its new global HQ. With floor-to-ceiling windows, TEAM LEWIS has taken the entire top floor at 50 Electric Boulevard. The state-of-the-art new office comes with soaring views across the capital and its own private roof terrace of approximately 3,350 sq ft. Over 1,500 sq ft of space will be dedicated to studios to provide in-house facilities for the design and production of innovative marketing campaigns.

TEAM LEWIS joins leading home technology company, SharkNinja, who will be opening the brand’s new EMEA headquarters at 50 Electric Boulevard with employees moving into the office space this autumn.

‘Everyone needs to learn first aid’

Emma Hammett BEM is the CEO of First Aid for Life, an award-winning training provider. She talks to Sarah Dale about why she is passionate about first aid being a skill everyone should know and her upcoming humanitarian project.

Emma Hammett is looking forward to an exciting year ahead. In November, she will be awarded an BEM by King Charles III for services to first aid training and providing support to the community.

And in February, she is off for the adventure of a lifetime to carry out humanitarian work in West Pokot, a remote part of Kenya on the Ugandan border. She will be off grid and travelling on the back of a motorbike for a month training ambulance drivers who are collecting people from remote villages. She will also be helping to carry out some building work and providing health education in schools.

“It’s so exciting,” says Emma, whose nursing career began in 1985 at St Thomas’ Hospital where she trained and worked.

“When I’ve been a mum for so long, it’s a chance to re-discover myself. It’s a huge adventure and I’m really looking forward to it but I couldn’t do it without my fabulous team who will run things while I’m away.”

Emma established First Aid for Life in 2007 after a career in several clinical and managerial roles, as well as a stint as a nurse in Wandsworth Prison. She started the company after being shocked to discover that first aid training can be provided following a three-day course.

First Aid for Life’s trainers are all health emergency professionals and military service medics. Courses can be bespoke and adapted to organisations’ needs such as providing more information on head and spinal injuries to sports organisations, for example, practical training to save people who have attempted suicide or catastrophic bleeding training in schools and youth organisations. They have also provided training to groups of people with disabilities such as sight loss or hearing impairment, as well as in schools and prisons.

They have also diversified into first aid training for dogs and even have a dog model to help learners practise dislodging food or foreign objects. They are currently working on a first aid course for cats.

“It’s important to do first aid training properly, that what is being taught is researched properly and delivered by medical professionals,” she says.

“As a learner, you need to have complete confidence that the person in front of you has the competence and confidence to teach you first aid and answer any questions.”

Emma’s sister Penelope was left paraplegic following a car accident.

“If bystanders had known first aid, they could have cleared her blocked airway and, it is possible that she would have been okay,” says Emma, who has two grown-up children. “Everyone needs to know first aid. It’s not only about saving lives, it’s about saving someone’s quality of life. I’m glad to see it’s on the school curriculum` now but it needs more hours devoted to it.”

First Aid for Life now has 58 trainers across the UK and Ireland, a small office team including two office managers, a marketing and communications team, a data analyst, a graphic designer based in Buenos Aires and a computing team in India.

Emma has been a member of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce for many years and credits the Chamber for their “invaluable support” through Covid.

“I have never felt so lost and demoralised than I did during Covid and having that business community on hand and financial help that I would have never asked for or accessed without their help was invaluable,” says Emma,

who carried out Covid vaccinations during the pandemic.

“The Pitch to the Supplier events are incredible and the Chamber has linked us with South Bank University to source funded student help as well as access to big businesses.”

Although they were allowed to continue teaching during the Covid lockdowns as an essential training provider, the number of people accessing face-to-face courses significantly dropped.

Fortunately, Emma had set up Onlinefirstaid. com in 2014 so had a bank of online courses ready to roll out as more people turned to virtual learning.

McDonald’s approached them and First Aid for Life trained over 1,000 managers across the UK and Ireland during Covid. The partnership has continued and they have created a bespoke McDonald’s course for the fast food chain.

Emma’s leadership style is quite relaxed and she encourages flexible working.

“It’s important to delegate and to empower your team to make decisions and drive the business as it makes for a far more interesting job for them,” she adds.

“Their ideas provide a great new perspective and everyone feels more connected to the business. I’m an ideas person so I need organisers and doers in my team to bring my ideas to life and help shape the business.

“I love the fact that our marketing comms and data analytics team is young and vibrant and in tune with all the new trends. They love trying and testing new things. So long as it is on brand, aligns with our values and doesn’t offend in any way, we will give it a go.”

THE PATH TO DIGITAL IMMIGRATION: navigating the UK's transition to eVisas

Businesses employing non-British workers need to prepare for a significant change in UK immigration procedures—one that requires immediate attention. Traditionally, non-British workers have relied on a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), a physical identity card confirming their immigration status, visa validity, and conditions of stay, as proof of their right to work. However, in the wake of Brexit, the Home Office has begun transitioning to digital immigration statuses, initially focusing on EU nationals and their families. This digitalisation initiative is now expanding to cover all immigration routes, including work and family-based visas.

Recently, the Home Office expanded access to the digital system, inviting all BRP holders to transition their physical immigration status to a digital eVisa through a UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) portal. Employers should encourage their non-British workers to set up a UKVI account to access their eVisa, especially since all BRPs will be abolished by 31 December 2024. Notably, most BRPs currently show this date as their expiration, even if the actual visa expiry is different.

To complete the transition, individuals will need their original BRP or passport (if the BRP is unavailable, such as in cases of loss), their date of birth, and access to the UK Immigration ID Check App. They can then create a UKVI account via www.gov.uk/get-access-evisa.

Starting in October 2024, the Home Office will no longer issue BRPs; all new visas will be issued as eVisas. This shift to a digital system offers several advantages, such as eliminating the risk of losing a visa and reducing delays in visa issuance, which currently involve waiting for BRPs to be collected from post offices or received by post. Through their UKVI portal, workers can easily share their immigration status with third parties such as employers and landlords, update their contact and document details, and review their visa conditions.

For employers, it’s important to note that a follow-up right-to-work check is not required for employees who have transitioned to eVisas,

provided that a proper right-to-work check was conducted before their employment began and the correct visa expiry date was recorded. However, if a right-to-work check is necessary for an eVisa holder, the employer must request a share code from the worker (valid for 90 days) to conduct the check online. This process will generate a photograph of the worker, which the employer must verify against the person presenting themselves for work. This verification can be conducted in person or via video call. Employers must retain a copy of the check result, either electronically in PDF format or as a hardcopy, for the duration of the worker’s employment and for two years thereafter. It’s also best practice to document the date of the check, the person who conducted it, and confirmation that the photograph has been verified in person or via video call.

Importantly, the online right-to-work check provides employers with a statutory excuse against civil penalties in the event of illegal working. The consequences of failing to carry out the required checks are severe, including civil penalties of up to £60,000 per illegal worker, potential criminal convictions with up to five years' imprisonment and unlimited fines, and the revocation of a sponsor licence.

Now may be an opportune time for businesses to consider conducting a mock compliance audit to ensure their HR systems are robust and compliant with the various immigration changes. While this article focuses on rightto-work checks for eVisas, there are situations where an online check may not be possible. In such cases, seeking immigration advice is crucial to ensure compliance.

Changes to employment law

There has been little substantial reform as yet given the new Government has been in power for only two months. However, the Government has promised to make a wide range of reforms to follow through on its manifesto promise to ‘Make Work Pay’.

These proposals include:

• Banning zero hours contracts: workers would have the right to a contract which reflects the number of hours they regularly work and notice of any change in shifts with compensation payable in proportion to the notice given for any cancelled or curtailed shifts.

• Making flexible working the default position from day one of employment: it is not clear how this will work in practice as all employees already have the right to request flexible working from their first day of employment. This is likely to apply to all workers, and employers will be required to accommodate this as far as is reasonable.

• Ensuring the right to claim unfair dismissal is a day one right (other than during any probationary period). Currently employees must be employed for two years or more to claim unfair dismissal. This change will require employers to follow the appropriate procedures before dismissing employees to avoid such claims and may lead to more claims for unfair dismissal.

• Making it unlawful to dismiss a woman for six months after her return to work from maternity leave, except in specified circumstances.

These changes are likely to be introduced into Parliament by 12 October 2024 and may come into force later in the year, or in 2025.

In order to strengthen protection for minorities, the Government is also proposing to ensure a right to equal pay for ethnic minorities and disabled people and introduce mandatory ethnicity and disability pay reporting for employers with 250 or more employees, similar to the gender pay reporting obligation which was brought in by the former government.

The Chamber is a ‘great resource’ and ‘incredibly useful’

The award-winning residential and dementia care home provider’s ambitious plans include a wealth of new care homes due to open across the country, with others in the pipeline.

Avery Healthcare’s care homes include Wandsworth Common Care Home, who provide residential, nursing and dementia care, joined Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce as a Patron member in July.

“We joined after being invited to the annual awards,” says Thomas Holden, General Manager.

“We met some wonderful people that evening and built some new networks and connections. I could see instantly what a great resource it was for us as a business and knew that patronship was the way to go.”

Since the summer, they have formed a “great alliance” with Age UK Wandsworth and have rolled out two new initiatives with them.

“We are hosting their monthly LGBTQ+ coffee mornings which are held on the last Tuesday of each month - please contact the home on 020 3751 1764 if you are interested in attending,” says Thomas.

“We had TV personality Paul Roseby OBE as the guest speaker in August and we've lined up the next three speakers already, which is exciting.

“We have also started offering free pampering sessions to Age UK Wandsworth's service users including access to our inhouse stylist which has been a great success for us both. This is all within two months of joining the Chamber, so I look forward to continuing to build and develop these relationships.”

Having formed strong connections and launched new initiatives in a short space of time of being Patron members, Thomas encourages new members to maximise their membership.

“Get out to the events, meet lots of new people and develop your network,” he says.

“There is such a wide variety of members that there will always be someone you can work with to develop both of your businesses.

“Most of the events are free or heavily subsidised to members and they are not only incredibly useful for networking but great fun too! It's a lovely group of people who are all there for the same reason, they are passionate about what they do and want to learn and grow together.”

Recruiting and affordability are the business’s main challenges.

“But I'm sure this is the same for all businesses no matter what their size,” he adds.

“We have 105 permanent staff members so there is always a constant need to recruit as people move on to pastures new. The benefits of being members of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce is that we have increased our networking opportunities and local community engagement.

“We can be a part of the local community, support those who need it and get support from those that can help.”

Avery Healthcare continues to grow and is delivering on an ambitious new build programme of its award-winning care homes.

Waterhouse Manor Care Home in Peterborough, which has 80 beds, was completed in the summer of 2024. In the autumn, West Wood Care Home in Sheringham, which will have 70 beds, and Greenholme House Care Home in Burley, Wharfedale, which will have 70 beds, are due to be completed. In winter 2024, Carrstone House Care Home in Downham Market, with 72 beds, is due to be completed. And in spring 2025, Alice Court Care Home in Eastbourne, with 70 beds, and Springwood Corner Care Home in Gravesend, with 62 beds, are due to be finished. Other sites are currently subject to final planning approvals.

AFC Wimbledon: Reconnecting with the Community through the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce

AFC Wimbledon, a fan-owned football club with deep roots in the local area, has found new ways to connect with the Wandsworth community since returning to its historic home at Plough Lane.

The club joined the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce as a Chamber Patron member when they moved back to Plough Lane to the brand-new Cherry Red Records Stadium.

"It was a fantastic way to reconnect," says Bal Srai, Head of Revenue.

"Being back in the area, we wanted to reestablish ourselves, not just as a football club but as an integral part of the Wandsworth community,” said Bal. “Joining the Chamber provided us with the perfect platform to engage with local businesses and rebuild relationships that had been challenging to maintain during our time away."

Since becoming a Chamber Patron, AFC Wimbledon has leveraged Chamber opportunities effectively, with networking within the Wandsworth business community proving invaluable.

"Networking has been a huge benefit for us," explains Alex Glaister, Business Development Executive. "The face-to-face engagement with local businesses and residents is crucial. The Chamber facilitates these personal interactions, strengthening our connection with the community."

As Chamber Patron members, AFC Wimbledon have also had the opportunity to host Chamber events too.

"This year we hosted the Chamber’s Christmas Party, which was a really fun, festive evening,” added Alex. “And we’ve also hosted pre-game networking events in our hospitality lounge before fixtures, which is something we will continue to do. It’s a great and fun way to network and it allows us to showcase our fantastic new stadium and facilities to people who might not otherwise know about them. As the stadium opened during COVID, it’s crucial for us to try to spread the word about the stadium and the Chamber has helped us to become more well-known in the business community.”

This year, AFC Wimbledon will once again welcome businesses for pre-game networking on October 22nd ahead of their Tuesday night fixture against Morecambe. The event will combine live football with a unique networking opportunity, giving members the chance to build relationships while experiencing the matchday atmosphere at Plough Lane.

AFC Wimbledon has hosted a wide variety of events at the stadium over the past year, showcasing the versatility of their facilities. The club has hosted the following:

• A white-collar boxing fight

• A speaker event series which included ‘An Evening with Geoff Hurst’

• Charity gala dinners for their charity partner, DLAG, with up to 400 attendees

• Stadium events, including a circus for a consultancy firm's team-building day

• An NFL community event and corporate football matches on the pitch, with multiple businesses hiring the stadium for recreational games

Additionally, the club regularly rents out their smaller lounges and executive boxes for internal meetings and conferences.

“We are blessed with fantastic facilities here at AFC Wimbledon,” added Events Manager Sam Earle. “The variety of events we’ve hosted highlights the versatility of our venue. Embedding ourselves in the local community has been a key focus since our return home. We’re excited to show local businesses around and inspire ideas for events they can hold here. The versatility of our venue has been shown by the wide-range of events we’ve hosted – and the circus was a particular highlight of the past year!”

Share your views on Clapham Junction to help shape its future

The Council is looking at the area around Clapham Junction station to consider how it could be shaped by local improvements and development in the future, making it a better place to live and work

We’re working with local partners including Network Rail, Greater London Authority and Transport for London to consider how we can improve this part of the town centre together.

These improvements would run alongside Network Rail upgrades to Clapham Junction station to ensure it continues to run efficiently and can support the high numbers of passenger that pass through the station every day.

Clapham Junction was also identified as an Opportunity Area in the Mayor of London’s London Plan, which means there are key locations with potential for new homes, jobs and infrastructure of all types. In response, the Council needs to draft a masterplan for the area which is a policy document that explains how the area may be developed. This masterplan will be developed with community engagement running throughout the process.

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council said: “We want to hear the views of all the people who live, work or visit this part of the borough so that future plans reflect local community needs and contribute to growth.

Jon Dickman, Managing Director of Needspace? Ltd, talks to Sarah Dale about operating in a competitive market, and how their flexible workspaces across London and the South East are supporting the changing needs of small businesses.

Needspace? was founded in 2005 when flexible working was a niche market with fewer competitors.

Clapham North Arts Centre is close to both Clapham High Street and Clapham North stations and 10 minutes from Waterloo by Tube. It is a “unique building with lots of character” in a “vibrant” location near one of the largest green spaces south of the river.

Jon Dickman joined Needspace? as Operations Director in April 2021, having originally joined the parent company, Wates Group, as a Special Projects Director in February 2020.

“We understand businesses’ need for flexibility and provide business space for SMEs to grow and contract when needed,” says Jon.

“We provide offices, workshops and studio space that can be personlised. We have gyms and recording studios, artists’ studios as well as office space. We have 140 companies across our sites and size ranges from a two-person office space to our biggest, which is Oliver’s Travels – who provide luxury villa holidays with properties in Italy and France – which has about 100 staff at the Clapham site.

“We’re not budget; we’re good value. We have had some businesses with us for 10 years and over 50 per cent have been with us for two years or more.”

Paintings in Hospitals have been based at the Business Centre since May 2021. During that time, we have been very impressed by the service we have received from the staff of the Centre who go above and beyond to help and assist, from taking deliveries to welcoming guests in reception and ensuring that the building runs smoothly. We have been impressed by the recent building improvements at the centre, creating a friendly working environment in break out spaces. The atmosphere is positive and friendly.

Needspace? has a team of 10 comprising Jon, a Finance Manager, Sales Manager, Property Manager and six Centre Managers. Five of the sites have a dedicated Centre Manager whereas Horsham and Crawley share one.

Covid was “pretty tough” for the firm and occupancy levels fell during the pandemic.

“But in early 2022, there was definitely an uplift in enquiries and occupancy improved and slowly built up,” says Jon.

As well as a lick of paint and some new signage, new break out areas have been introduced to some of the sites as demand has grown for a communal space to sit and chat together during a break or exchange ideas over a business plan.

“We buy freehold; we like to buy our own buildings and we like characterful properties that we can easily divide up into separate workspaces,” explains Jon, who moves across all seven sites but can be usually found at Earlsfield or Crawley.

“We have recently refurbished our Earlsfield Centre and created a new reception and break-out area. This is a result of our ambition to update our centres to attract a variety of occupiers from individuals to more established corporate entities.”

Needspace? is a new member of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce.

“We joined because we realised that we provide a service locally, but we don’t blow our own trumpet about what we offer and how we can help other businesses,” says Jon.

“A lot of people don’t know that we’re here, so we want to increase our visibility. We can provide that personal touch to local businesses.”

Wandsworth Council shortlisted for Public Sector Organisations of the Year award

Wandsworth Council has been shortlisted at the UK Social Mobility Awards as finalists for the Public Sector Organisation of the Year award.

This recognition underscores the council's commitment to social mobility and creating a fairer borough with opportunities for all residents. Wandsworth has led the way in this area, making socio-economic class a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. This is something the Government has pledged to introduce at a national level.

The UK Social Mobility Awards - also known as ‘the SOMOs’recognise action that has promoted and increased social mobility in the workplace.

Wandsworth’s submission focused on the cost-of-living crisis and support offered to help those people disproportionately impacted. Wandsworth put together a comprehensive, £15 million Cost of Living fund (the biggest in London) to support families and individuals across the borough. The fund helped to keep council tax bills as the lowest in the country, created a network of community spaces, and provided cash vouchers to lowerincome families to help cover the cost of new school uniforms.

The council has also provided food vouchers during school holidays to those eligible for free school meals. In partnership with Citizens Advice, there is an extensive Cost of Living Hub to ensure residents can access guidance around future skills, training and apprenticeships.

The council’s ambitious Homes for Wandsworth programme was also highlighted as it is on track to deliver over 1,000 new council rent homes for local families.

Another area where the council uses its influence to embed social mobility is around supply chains and contracts. Contracts put out for tender require staff to be paid the Living Wage. In all procurement,

the council requires bidders to demonstrate how they will deliver social value. A recent success in Wandsworth was a package of support worth more than £1.3 million from a major supplier who committed to hiring eight employees from Priority Groups (unemployed people, care leavers, ex-offenders, disabled residents, veterans, modern slavery survivors). Finally, the submission emphasised how practical support for lowerincome residents is key to boosting social mobility in the borough. In the last decade, 2,500 residents have been supported into employment using the specialist jobs brokerage service Work Match. The scheme links local jobseekers with businesses looking for new workers or apprentices.

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “We are ambitious for everyone in Wandsworth and that’s why we have made sure that social mobility is embedded in everything we do.

“I’d like to thank council staff and partners for working so hard to improve social mobility in the borough over the past year. There is much more to do but we should be proud of being shortlisted as a Social Mobility Awards finalist.”

£170,000 revamped play area opens in Southfields

The Coronation Gardens play area in Southfields is open following a major refurbishment by Wandsworth Council in partnership with the Wimbledon Foundation.

The £173,000 project has brought not just new play equipment, but also a series of biodiversity improvements, including new planting for pollinators, enhancements to the historic rose garden, and new trees. Information boards have been installed to explain the new planting, and to encourage visitors to support wildlife at home.

Cllr Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:

“This wonderful new playground reflects an investment to encourage all Wandsworth children to play in our parks.

“The council has committed to its residents to be fairer, more compassionate, and more sustainable in the work that we do. We are delighted to invest in our borough’s children by giving them a safe, accessible, and biodiverse open space to safely play in and explore.”

The completion of the new play area involved two rounds of consultation, ensuring that residents and stakeholders had their voices heard, and that the final space truly reflects the needs of the community.

Cllr Gasser continued: “A special mention must go to the Friends of Coronation Gardens group, whose contributions, from planting bulbs for spring displays to maintaining the tranquil corner garden, are truly commendable.

“It is in no small part thanks to their efforts that Coronation Gardens was also recently the recipient of an internationally recognised Green Flag award, recognising its value to the community, and the high standard to which it is maintained.”

Further work will take place later in the year to refurbish and install a new statue on the garden’s 1904 heritage drinking fountain, in collaboration with the Putney School of Art and Design.

Best Ever Ofsted Inspection for South Thames Colleges Group with

two

Outstanding grades achieved for students’ Personal Development and Behaviour and Attitudes

South Thames Colleges Group (STCG) is delighted to have been rated Good with Outstanding features following an Ofsted inspection in May 2024. The four-day inspection by fifteen Ofsted inspectors at six sites resulted in the Group’s best ever Ofsted outcome. In two of the eight areas of the Ofsted framework, ‘Behaviour and attitudes’ and ‘Personal Development’ an ‘Outstanding’ grade was achieved with five ‘Good’ grades in remaining areas. The group is proud of its students and staff for this exceptionally good result.

The inspectors were impressed with the quality of education overall stating: “Staff at all levels care very much about their learners and apprentices and provide them with excellent support, including counselling and exceptional support for mental health” and noted that they “thrive in an inclusive, caring and welcoming environment.”

The inspectors awarded two Outstanding features highlighting that the group offers out-standing personal development for its students and that their attitudes to learning and behaviour is outstanding:

“Learners and apprentices demonstrate exceptional behaviour in lessons and around the campuses. They develop excellent social and communication skills through work experience and volunteering. Learners participate in a wide range of interesting activities through which they make a positive contribution to their communities.”

It further praised the College Group on how well it prepares its students for progression to their next step stating that “staff provide exceptional support to learners with UCAS applications and the university interview process” and that “leaders and managers effectively design their curriculums to enable learners to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to go on to higher level courses, university or employment.”

The report highlighted the positive working relationships with employers and a curriculum offer aligned to the needs of employers and local industries stating that young learners “have access to meaningful work placements. Consequently, learners deepen their understanding of their subjects and gain valuable industry experience.”

Group Principal and CEO, Peter MayhewSmith said: “We are delighted with our best ever inspection result. It’s a glowing tribute to the remarkable work done by all of our

wonderful staff, students and Governors, making our Colleges safe, friendly and ambitious places to work and study. Our progress in developing our students is recognised as ‘Outstanding’ and we will build on all this fantastic feedback to develop the Colleges even further for the future.”

Kingston and South Thames College Principal and Ofsted Lead, John O’Shea, commented: “We are delighted to share the outcomes of our recent Ofsted Inspection. STCG is Outstanding in ‘Behaviour and Attitudes’ and Outstanding in the ‘Personal Development’ of our students. We achieved a very strong ‘Good’ overall and I am incredibly proud of comments in the report. This is a huge achievement for STCG and coupled with our incredibly strong Achievement Rates places us at the fore of FE providers in London.”

BCC Quarterly Economic Survey: Business confidence Continues to tick up in Q2

• Business conditions, measured by sales and cashflow improved in Q2, returning to pre-pandemic levels.

• Business confidence has increased, with 58% of firms expecting an increase in turnover in the next twelve months.

Despite a boost in conditions and confidence most firms (75%) are still not increasing investment, with wide sectoral variations.

The BCC’s Quarterly Economic Survey – the UK’s largest and longest-running independent business survey – shows measures of business confidence and business conditions slightly improved in Q2 2024, albeit from a very low base.

38% of firms (compared with 36% in Q1) said they had seen an increase in domestic sales over the previous three months, while 43% reported no change, and 20% a decrease.

After a static picture in Q1, business confidence has increased slightly in Q2. 58% of firms say they are expecting an increase in turnover over the next year compared with 56% in Q1. 29% expect no change and only 13% expect a decrease.

With inflation easing to target – the data also reveals that fewer firms (39% compared to 46% in Q1) expect to hike their own prices in the coming months.

The survey, which was conducted between 13th May and 10th June, of nearly 5,000 firms across the UK (91% of whom are SMEs – fewer than 250 employees)

• Fewer firms expect to increase their prices in the next three months

• Concern from businesses about external factors continues to decline – with worries about inflation falling to 49% of companies.

“The latest results from our QES show that both business conditions and business confidence have improved, albeit from a relatively low base.

“The last four years have seen SMEs deal with one crisis after the other, from Covid lockdowns to supply chain breakdowns and new trade barriers with the EU. As some of these crises have ebbed, more SMEs are regaining confidence and reporting increased sales and cash flow.

“The data also show that concern about inflation among businesses has dropped to levels last seen in 2021 as fewer firms expect to raise prices. A Bank rate cut later this year will help bring down borrowing costs.

“However, investment levels remain a long-term concern and significant sectoral divergences remain, as sectors such as hospitality and retail continue to report far tougher trading conditions.

“The new Government should capitalise on the confidence momentum and focus on

Smoking related ill health continues to affect the workplace, amounting to productivity losses of £143 million per year.

Let’s Swap to Stop and make a difference!

Anyone who works in Wandsworth is eligible for stop smoking advice and support and free access to Nicotine Replacement Therapies for up to 12 weeks. This includes vape kits and supplies via the Swap to Stop programme.

The Swap to Stop campaign, introduced by the government, aims to help smokers quit by encouraging them to switch from traditional cigarettes to vaping.

Here’s how you can get involved:

1. Raise Awareness: Spread the word about the campaign within your workplace. Share information through internal communications channels, such as emails, newsletters, and posters.

2. Participate: Get involved with Stoptober this October and support smokers to quit for good. A suite of social assets, posters and digital screens can be found at the Department of Health & Social Care campaign resource centre.

3. Support: Encourage smokers to participate in the scheme. Let them know that they can receive a free vaping starter kit through the national program. This kit includes a choice of products, strengths, and flavours.

4. Sign up: Make a commitment to well-being of your employees and workplace by signing up to the Wandsworth Healthy Workplaces Award. Email publichealth@wandsworth.gov.uk for more information.

Q1 In a few words tell us a bit about your business?

At Furzedown Builders, we believe in turning houses into homes that reflect the unique style and needs of our clients. For years, our team have been helping families across the Wandsworth area transform their living spaces, from bespoke bathroom renovations to complete home makeovers.

Q2 What gives your business ‘the x-factor’?

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to diversity and customer care. We’re proud to have a number of skilled female builders on our team, which is still rare in the industry. This brings a unique perspective to our projects, ensuring attention to detail and a collaborative approach that our clients love.

Additionally, we have a dedicated office team focused on providing exceptional customer service, offering guidance and support at every stage of the project. This combination of a diverse, talented team and a strong emphasis on customer care is what gives us our X-Factor.

Q3 What motivated you to set up in business?

Our director, Dawid, was motivated to set up Furzedown Builders after years of working as a sole trader. During that time, many of the jobs he took on involved fixing projects where other builders had either walked off-site or delivered work of a poor standard. This left customers frustrated and uncertain about who they could trust.

Dawid wanted to change that. He set out to build a firm that is not only transparent and reliable but also elevates the customer service experience. His goal was to ensure clients were kept informed and involved every step of the way. In addition, we’ve embraced a strong presence online, through social media and our website, giving customers a clear insight into our capabilities and work standards.

In addition to improving the customer experience, we also wanted to change the way the building industry approached its workforce. Many builders work with temporary or freelance contractors, which can lead to high turnover and inconsistency in work quality

At Furzedown Builders, we believe in treating our team like the valued professionals they are. That’s why we offer permanent contracts, providing our staff with stability and a sense of belonging, which in turn fosters loyalty and pride in the work they do. By creating a positive environment for our employees, we ensure that the quality of service remains high for every project we undertake.

Q4 What do you like most about working as a start-up?

As a start-up company, what we enjoy most is the opportunity to grow and evolve alongside our clients and community. Every project is a fresh challenge that allows us to push our creativity and expertise further. The excitement of seeing a transformation unfold, from initial design ideas to the final reveal, keeps us passionate about what we do.

Additionally, being a smaller team means we have the flexibility to provide a more personal and tailored service, building stronger relationships with our clients. Watching our reputation and client base grow through hard work and dedication is incredibly rewarding, and it motivates us to keep striving for excellence in every job we take on.

Q5 What has been your greatest business success to date?

Our greatest success to date has been our rapid growth over the past 10 months. We started as a team of just two, working tirelessly without taking any wages, and have since expanded to a full-time team of five. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re proud of the progress we’ve made in such a

commitment to quality, and the trust our clients have placed in us.

Q6 What has been your lowest moment?

Our lowest point came when Dawid transitioned from being a sole trader and had to part ways with his previous business partner due to personal issues. It was a difficult and emotional decision, as it not only meant losing a valued working relationship but also seeing someone he cared about face such challenges.

However, this moment of adversity ultimately led Dawid to create Furzedown Builders. It became a turning point, motivating him to establish a company built on transparency, integrity, and a strong team ethos, which has shaped everything we do today.

Q7 In terms of business achievements, where do you want to be within the next 5 years?

In five years, we envision Furzedown Builders as a company with a significantly larger workforce, leading the way in transforming how the building industry is perceived— both by clients and by those who

work within it. We aim to continue providing our employees with stable, rewarding careers that offer real opportunities for growth and progression.

At the same time, we want to instil greater trust and confidence in our clients, showing them that builders can be transparent, reliable, and dedicated to delivering high-quality work. Our goal is to set a new standard in the industry, one project at a time.

Q8 What would be your top tip to someone thinking of starting up their own business?

Our advice to anyone thinking of starting their own business is simple: definitely go for it! But make sure you do your research thoroughly. Look into all the financial support options available, including grants and backing opportunities. There are also valuable mentoring programs offered by the government that can be incredibly helpful in guiding you through the process.

Most importantly, always respect your clients. A successful, long-term business is built on fairness and respect towards its customers, and that’s what will keep people coming back to you over the years.

Originally from Spanish Town, Jamaica, I am Felicia Mattis-Rome, the CEO of Business Launchpad and Tooting Works. I am passionate about empowering young entrepreneurs and supporting local businesses to thrive.

Q2 What’s your business all about?

Tooting Works offers affordable office spaces and a supportive community for small businesses and start-ups in Tooting, Wandsworth. Our on-site youth charity Business Launchpad provides free business coaching, employability support, and resources to young entrepreneurs aged 16-30 across London.

Q3 Three words to describe yourself?

Determined, Compassionate, Driven.

Q4 Ideal Customer?

Our ideal customer is a young entrepreneur with a passion for their idea but needing guidance and resources to turn it into a successful business. Additionally, small businesses looking for affordable office space and a nurturing environment.

Q5 Biggest achievement?

Transforming Business Launchpad into a leading organisation that has supported thousands of young people in starting and growing their businesses. Seeing these entrepreneurs succeed and contribute to their communities is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, assisting tenants and their businesses to remain viable during and after the recent pandemic is something I am very pleased to have been able to do.

Q6 Biggest gripe?

Bureaucratic red tape and lack of access to funding that slows down the process of helping young entrepreneurs get the support and resources they need. It’s frustrating when unnecessary obstacles hinder progress.

Q7 Your inspiration?

The resilience and creativity of young entrepreneurs who, despite facing numerous challenges, remain determined to pursue their dreams. Their energy and innovation constantly inspire me.

Q8 Philosophy in Business?

Empowerment through coaching, mentoring and education. By providing the right tools and resources, we can help individuals unlock their potential and achieve their business goals. Collaboration and community are key to success.

Q9 Sporting Hero?

It’s hard to choose one, so I am going to be cheeky and choose two, Usain Bolt and Serena Williams. Their love for, and dedication to their craft, their hard work, and ability to overcome obstacles to become a champion are incredibly inspiring. They both exemplify excellence and resilience.

Q10 Biggest tip for success?

Believe in yourself and your vision. Surround yourself with a supportive network, and never be afraid to ask for help. Persistence and adaptability are essential – keep learning and evolving with every challenge you face.
