Businesses and individuals are increasingly conscious of making their events sustainable and as Rothamsted Conference Centre is in the home of agricultural innovators at Rothamsted in Harpenden, the whole campus is focused on climate change, food security and sustainability.

When you hold an event at Rothamsted Conference Centre, you can be sure they will do everything they can to reduce the impact on the environment. They offer a diverse range of event spaces that cater to a wide spectrum of needs. Whether you’re planning a large-scale conference, an all-team meeting or a training session, this versatile venue has the perfect and sustainable meeting space for you.

But what exactly makes them sustainable?

The Conference Centre buildings are accredited as BREEAM ‘Excellent’. BREEAM inspires developers to improve, innovate and make effective use of resources. The focus on sustainable value and efficiency makes BREEAM certified developments generate sustainable environments that enhance the wellbeing of the people who live and work in them. Only the top 10% of UK new non-domestic buildings have achieved an ’Excellent” rating.

Rothamsted Conference Centre has automatic and LED lighting together with smart heating and cooling systems and solar panels with heat and power reliance 80% on themselves. Suppliers must align with their sustainability values too, Paddy and Scott’s coffee and JPA Workspaces being perfect examples, and the restaurant constantly review their carbon footprint, recently halving the number of suppliers with no reduction in quality, and all now within a 30-mile radius.

They support the 20% less plastic movement, in line with the Meeting Industry Association’s pledge, all water being served in glass bottles or jugs at events rather than single use plastic bottles as well as providing free water machines .In order to reduce food waste at events they use client feedback to adjust portion sizes – using the ethos that they can always provide more rather than throw food away, thereby reducing food waste.

Food is all cooked fresh and in-house, and served on china crockery, and all packed lunch boxes, takeaway cups and food boxes provided in the restaurant are biodegradable, compostable, recycled and recyclable. Straws are made of sugar cane and napkins are unbleached and recycled. There is 25% less meat on their menus, therefore an increase in vegetarian and vegan dishes, proving increasingly popular and they use wonky veg. The meat they use is Red Tractor British farmed and fish is from sustainable sources; maintaining the farming community and keeping our seas well-stocked.

They offer virtual showrounds, have upgraded AV facilities so delegates can dial in to meetings, electric charging points, and car sharing spaces.

And most importantly, all profits support the world-leading agricultural research of their colleagues at Rothamsted Research, so each meeting room hired or cup of coffee drunk, helps to support this cause.
