Two Herts businesses receive top food awards

in recognition of their commitment to healthier eating and sustainability.

High Leigh Conference Centre in Hoddesdon was the first business to receive a Gold award for its efforts to improve the health impact of its food through a number of actions, including removing all deep fat fryers from the site.

The venue also champions sustainability and has made significant changes to continue to reduce the impact the conference centre has on the environment.

The restaurant at Farnham House, Stevenage, one of Hertfordshire County Council’s offices, soon followed by achieving a Silver Herts Responsible Food Award. HCL, which operates the site, promotes sustainability and has worked to reduce energy usage, ensure waste is managed sustainably and responsibly procure ingredients and cleaning products.

Significant changes have also been made to the food and drink on offer, including ensuring that 90 per cent of the cold beverage range is now either low in or free from sugar and swapping their mayonnaise to a lighter version.

HCL now plans to work with the Herts Responsible Food Team to go further and push towards the Gold award.

Toni Bevilacqua from HCL said: “HCL looks forward to working alongside the Herts Responsible Food Team to provide our customers with tasty and delicious products with a healthy and sustainable mindset at our core, creating a food culture that encourages healthier eating for your wellbeing and importantly has a positive impact on our environment.”

The awards are run by the county council in partnership with Broxbourne Borough Council.
