Construction leads the way

The latest MegaGrowth 50 highlights the dynamic nature of Kent’s economy, with construction and building services businesses leading the way. This year, retail has surged to become the second most represented sector in the MegaGrowth 50, up from fifth in 2024.

The current construction landscape

The construction and building services sector continues to be a major contributor to the regional economy. Several companies have experienced significant growth and resilience, reflecting their drive and adaptability in the face of economic headwinds.

“It’s impressive to see that half of the top 10 businesses are in the construction and building services sector, with 25% of all featured companies operating in this segment of the economy,” comments Alex Cosgrove, Commercial Partner and Head of Construction at Brachers law firm

“Companies like Drakemoor Ltd, Lawtech Group Ltd, and Primech Building Services have shown remarkable growth, with increases of 483%, 464%, and 399% respectively.”

Alex continues, “This highlights the sector’s resilience and importance, especially considering the economic challenges of recent years. The construction sector remains a vital part of the South East’s economy, driving growth and innovation – a trend we can expect to continue in light of the new government’s focus on housebuilding and reforming the planning system.”

Building for the future

In 2025, Kent’s construction sector is expected to see continued growth, driven by a recovery in private housing, with project starts anticipated to increase due to mortgage and building costs stabilising.

Technological advances are also predicted, which are set to revolutionise construction practices, improving efficiency and project outcomes.

“A strong emphasis on sustainability will also continue to shape the industry, with more green building materials and energy-efficient designs becoming the norm,” comments Jennifer Williamson, Partner and Head of Real Estate at Kreston Reeves.

“It is wonderful to see so many construction companies in the MegaGrowth 50 this year who have sustainability at the heart of their operations, and a testament to those making these businesses a success”.

Jennifer continues, “In looking at what the future holds, the sector must address ongoing challenges such as labour shortages and material cost fluctuations to fully capitalise on the growth opportunities ahead. The resilience we have seen is something that must continue and I’m excited to see what the future holds for Kent construction.”
