This is my first Welcome of 2024 and there is a lot to report. At our virtual AGM Christophi Christou who has been on the SELCC Board for a few years and represents Peabody one of London’s oldest housing associations has become Vice President and will take over my role at this year’s AGM.

This year is full of elections across the world and the first one for some of us is the election of a new Mayor in Lewisham. Damien Egan has resigned in order to stand at a by-election in Kingswood, Bristol his home town. SELCC will miss Damien as he has been a great supporter of the Chamber. The election date for Lewisham residents is set for Thursday, 7 March. We all know Thursday, 2 May is the date for the Mayor of London and London Assembly election, but we don’t know the date of the General Election. At our recent Executive Lunch, Professor Tony Travers, director of LSE London and visiting professor in LSE Department of Government was our guest speaker. He feels that late October could be the date, but we all have to be prepared for any time.

We have a year of in-person events coming up, including our popular Office Drinks. This year, we are restricting attendance to Chamber Members due to their popularity. Our Link ‘n Drinks will continue to be open to Members and Non. Many more webinars are planned, and we already have the Summer BBQ at The Clarendon Hotel, Golf Day at Royal Blackheath and two quizzes in aid of the London Air Ambulance Charity listed for bookings in this issue.

I am delighted to confirm that Ravensbourne University London has just joined as a Strategic Partner and Lewisham College have rejoined. We look forward to holding a breakfast meeting at the College before the end of this academic year.
