In the distant future every man will have moved away from planet Earth to find home somewhere else in the heavens. This thesis aims to explore a way to commemorate and monumentalize the planet, Earth, that every human being once called home. This is done by grounding the surreal with the tangible, a connection that is done through architectural conditions, connections, and elements. The vehicle of exploration for the thesis collages itself as a monumental ambulatory Earth dome and suggestive public space. On a tertiary leve

FRAME TOWER OF BLACKSBURG + Y E A R : 2016 // 4th + P R O J E C T D U R A T I O N : Two Weeks + L O C A T I O N : Blacksburg, Virginia + P R O G R A M : Observation Tower + M A T E R I A L : Glue Laminated Timber

Atop the Blacksburg Municipal Golf Course, the opportunity to construct a tower that involves wood as the primary structural material. The use of wood as the primary structure makes it possible, through processes that aim to eliminate natural inconsistencies and reduce the possibility of faulting, to highlight the amazing physical properties of wood. The possibilities to develop skeletal and surface oriented structures, that are relatively light weight and high strength are explored throughly. Focusing on structure as the primary form giver, two cantilevered truss’ house the stair that gives way to a vertical frame in the sky. The frame itself can be seen from a distance, “a portrait in the sky”. The frame is made up of a moment frame connecting to the glue laminated truss’, and a twisting-wood facade creates a gallery to the surrounding views.

Multiple distributed libraries will house most of their physical books in one building, while increasing the size of e-books. The physical books demand 30,000 sq. ft. In addition, a service for digital equipment, an auditorium for 300 people, a self-serving area to seek employment, and a modern art gallery are additional requirements to that what defines a regular library. ;

Project Summary

The Roanoke Public Branch Library, proposed for the Heart of Downtown Roanoke, Virgina, plans to house over 500,000 books, a modern art gallery, Coffee shop, and more. The Library is a complex steel structure building with a modern facade that shares the same language as Downtown Roanoke. The building reflects on the historical elements of Roanoke, focusing on particular elements of the railroad and brick buildings.

Urban Strategy

The vision for the Roanoke Public Branch Library revolves around a respect for the Downtown district's historical background, while establishing a new vision for the city. celebrating the past. Although the library is evidently modern, it feels as though it has been there as long as Roanoke. Because the library is an institution, a strong focus on the book stacks becoming a focal element, “floating” above a central courtyard was developed through structure as space + ornament.

project summary + urban strategy // pen and marker, digital

The library is divided into three elements by their hierarchy. The left side is dedicated to handling the book: containing reading, study, and technology areas as well as the special collections. The central courtyard is a public space, giving way to the city, and inviting it's users into the library. Above this central courtyard, is the focal point of the library: the book stacks, nicknamed "The Hive". The right side is dedicated to the arts: containing an auditorium, modern art gallery, and several public spaces.

Through the measure and play of Architectural elements such as floor, wall, column, door, window, stairs, ceiling, and roof, a proposal in the form of an Architectural proposition in the form of a library situated within the town of New Castle, Virginia. The proposal demonstrates and articulates the understanding of Architectural space, structure, building material, natural light, form, and boundaries of the Architectural realm.

NEW CASTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY approach // digital

The primary form giver to the library is derived from an archetype from the town. The false “country store box like facades integrate itself into the project, informing how natural light enters the room, demarcation of interior and exterior spaces, engagement of the existing site, and the promenaded throughout the space. A vertical tower sheds a feint glow on the town. Juxtaposing the surrounding height, the tower glows like a beacon for the town, a revival of the towns spirits.

A coretin steel structure engages the town’s fabric of the rustic old, while introducing a modern material like steel weaves into this fabric the sleek, new. Pre-cast concrete walls establish the walls as solid, although the primary structure steel is hidden. This proves meaningful to the built enviornment, built primarly from false brick facades The logitudnal axis of the library establishes continuity within the town.

The skylight that sits on this longitudnal axis, runs the length of the library, where it meets the vertical tower where it is transformed into a giant box of light.

Situated within an open field in Blacksburg, Virginia lies The Cube, a ruin in the landscape which once served as a small pavillion . An Architectural proposition arises to develop a Room + Garden based on the Architectural footprint of this ruin. The Room + Garden explores the articulation of material and structure. The mediator in this articulation is the detail, something that fits in the hand. This detail is beautifully designed, well crafted, and brings two different materials together as one.
