ABOUT ME Growing up in Maryland, I have been lucky enough to explore the place I call home. Going on constant adventures opened my eyes to the natural beauty in my own backyard, providing a spark to discover more. My camera and sketchbook began following me everywhere I went so I could document my experiences. This curiosity led me to Landscape Architecture, where I saw the opportunity to design places for people and wildlife to come together. I am currently a senior of the Landscape Architecture program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where I have found a passion working with communities to design equitable green spaces.

FINDING BEAUTY IN THE COMMONPLACE

2020 ASLA NATIONAL STUDENT HONOR AWARD RECIPIENT GENERAL DESIGN CATEGORY WHERE | Overbrook, Philadelphia, PA FOR | Overbrook Environmental Education Center | 3rd Year Studio PROJECT MEMBERS | Ben Nardi Though often overlooked and inaccessible, vacant urban sites are teeming with wildlife and a special delicate beauty. These autonomous landscapes that have been cut off and forgotten, provide places to think, walk, and refuel just by being—a site that a hundred years ago was a quarry providing commerce and jobs has left in its wake a landscape that just by existing fosters contemplation, community, and imagination. Finding Beauty in the Commonplace uses this forgotten landscape to build upon the existing history, community, and characteristics of an urban brownfield site in Overbrook, Philadelphia. The design reconnects the community to the native flora and fauna allowing both wildlife and community members to seek refuge in a sea of dense urban development.

SITE EXPLORATION Visiting the site-during different times of the day to study light conditions, during storm events to see where water collected, and sometimes sitting very patiently to observe the fauna. Photographs and drawings recorded the beauty I had experienced on site.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS The community is the expert of their neighborhood and as such, I respected the wisdom of their voices. The goal was to prompt discussion about their vision for the site through senses exercises. Overwhelmingly, the community wanted access to green space

LEFT: Photos from the community meeting during the senses exercise ABOVE: Example of a response from the senses exercise with the community. Overwhelming the community wanted access to green space

MILL CREEK CONCEPT The concept focuses on something I heard from the community—more access to green space. This is done by introducing landscape typologies that emulate the landscapes the Mill Creek would traverse from the headwaters to where it connects with the Schuylkill River. This provides much needed green space for the community and wildlife to seek refuge in.

CIRCULATION An accessible walk for all weaves through the site, providing visitors with different perspectives of the landscape.

VERNON CONNECTION WHERE | Germantown, Philadelphia, PA FOR | Germantown Studio | Design 5 PROJECT MEMBERS | Ben Nardi Located along Chelten Avenue in Germantown, Philadelphia, Vernon Connection aims to reconnect residents to green space, history, and each other. What once was an underused parking lot, now serves as a critical civic space that honors and celebrates the area’s rich ecology and geology. The space includes a museum to highlight the diverse history of Germantown and its residents, a plaza for small public events, and a lushly planted seating area.

The site is currently an underused parking lot boarded by Vernon Park to the North and Chelten Avenue to the South. Currently, Vernon Park, one of Germantown’s greatest assets is cut off from Chelten Avenue leading to underutilization and a disconnect between the two spaces.

APPLIED HISTORICAL RESEARCH Germantown is one of the most historically rich neighborhoods in America dating back to 1689 when it was founded by Quakers, Mennonite and German families. Since its inception, Germantown has been a place of change and home to many different groups of people varying in ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Through the change, the historical importance of Germantown and the people who lived there has been lost. A proposed museum located in the Vernon connection would tell the diverse and layered story of Germantown’s history.

CONTEXTUAL CONNECTION The site is in very close proximity to the Wissahickon Creek but lacks the character of the park. The site will take on the local character by utilizing native plantings and building materials. Wissahickon canopy in fall

RECONNECT The Vernon Connection serves as a transition space along Chelten Avenue, connecting the energy of Chelten Avenue with the ample green space in Vernon Park. The Connection will be a place that encourages togetherness and interaction, allowing people to learn something new about each other and the neighborhood that they live in.

COASTAL PROCESSION WHERE | Crescent City, CA FOR | Plant Community Ecology PROJECT MEMBERS | Ben Nardi For my plant community ecology class, we were asked to pick a plant community anywhere in the world and do research on what makes it unique in order to inform an environmental center/park design, I chose the coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) plant community. Research topics such as soils, hydrology, plant physiognomy, climate, and ecosystem interdependencies informed my understanding of this landscape. My design was focused on providing visitors of the “Redwood Environmental Center” the opportunity to see and learn about the entire ecosystem. Educational and play moments are scattered throughout the design enhancing each visitor’s experience. Walking amongst the giants in California is a surreal experience everyone deserves to have, every time someone sees the redwoods for the first time a relationship is created between the landscape and that person that will last a lifetime.

CONCEPT The design concept is based on information discovered in my research, the movement pattern of the marbled murrelet. This species of coastal bird relies on the ocean for food and the old-growth coastal redwoods for shelter, thus creating a pattern of movement from land to sea. “Coastal procession” follows that pattern of movement allowing visitors to experience everything the coastal redwoods has to offer.

THE FOUNDRY WHERE | Newburgh, NY FOR | Foundry Apartments // Jonathan Ceci Landscape Architects PROJECT MEMBERS | Jonathan Ceci, Ben Nardi, Julie Goodman-Khasanii Jonathan Ceci Landscape Architects was approached by the Foundry Apartments executive board to produce initial concept ideas for their central courtyard. The client expressed a desire for a lush green space that residents could congregate in that included a pool, outdoor dining area, and a play area. My role in the project was working collaboratively with the firm principles to create design ideas that would be presented to the client. Drawings included base drawings (CAD and 3D), concept drawings to envision various design options, precedent images to support ideas, and final drawings of the design that the team and client settled on.

CONCEPT SKETCHES Early drawings that communicated various design ideas for the courtyard. These were starting blocks to conversations between team members that helped narrow down the design direction.

ILLUSTRATIONS WHERE | Everywhere FOR | Exploration Drawing is a way to communicate what we as humans see as important and beautiful. It provides me the freedom to look at a space and to filter it with my eyes and ears, allowing me to write and rewrite the narrative of a place. Every time I pick up a pencil and create a line I hope to tell a story that is unique and grounded in the moment.

07

PHOTOGRAPHY WHERE | Everywhere FOR | Exploration I am passionate about capturing and finding the beauty in everything from serene landscapes to busy city streets. I believe interesting stories can be told through photographs that show how and why humans interact within a landscape. For me, a photograph is a way to freeze a moment in time, something to look back on and cherish.
