KING RICHARD III VISITOR CENTRE EXTENSION
02
PROJECT SCHEME The growing popularity of visiting the final resting place of King Richard III has necessitated the expansion of the existing Visitor Centre. The strategic masterplan has been devised to sensitively re-evaluate and add a deeper dimension to the historical nature of the site as well as providing an oasis of peace within a busy city centre. The former car park has proved to be the ideal location for a multi-sensory experience. Primarily, the project aimed to enhance the accessibility to and from the Visitor Centre and additional facilities have been designed to appeal to the needs of both a tourist and local community. The new-build incorporates a coffee shop surrounded by landscaped gardens leading to an open-air amphitheatre to the south. The two-storey CafÊ 1485 with a 360 degree viewing experience visually links where the body of the British King was discovered and his final resting place in the nearby Leicester Cathedral. The site looks back upon the past with a contemporary twist to bring history into a modern context and allow the legacy of King Richard III to live on in a multi-purpose site suitable for all ages.
