Back Yard Sky The Back Yard Sky is a multifunctional highrise located in the heart of the Chicago loop on Franklin and Washington. The tower was designed to give each floor a terrace in the sky. Residential zones are pushed out to the farthest extent of the buildings mass, making them the most important program of this buildling. These residential zones are broken up into four different zones that share massive communal backyards in the sky. Commercial offices divide the different residential zones and have access to outdoor terraces. Reflective panels on the bottoms of all terraces reflect the green space beneath them to the ground of the site. This illusion creates a forest in the sky to the public at ground level.

1 Catenary Market This project was a result of a study of catenary curvature. Studies led to the development of an out door market place, covered by a canopy that was designed to be inviting and flowing. The site is on Lake and Canal, immediately West of the Chicago Loop. Service and storage of goods happens in the mass, while there is a burrowed open air market space that is surrounded by it. The canopy that looms above this open air market provides a ripple effect towards the Chicago river. When one is in the market space they feel the canopy seeming to float above them, making them feel secure and fascinated even as the metra train passes right underneath them.

Navy Pier is Chicago’s number one tourist attraction, however to most locals it is not interesting or attractive. The Fusion Capsule is a self sufficient recreational factory. The kiosks that once polluted Navy Pier are now replaced by wholesale distributors that use the pier to produce their goods just feet below them. Along with production zones, there are research zones that allow for the latest innovations. Cells, inspired by a Brookfield Zoo typology study, penetrate the shape that has been eroded by the north south winds and water. Each cell provides different functions, some expose the water below, while others act as skylights, or small parks.

Monolithic Module This Bike shack is located in Humboldt Park In Chicago. The building system of the shack was designed as large monolithic blocks that formed a heavy solid shape in the middle of a park. The form is simple and bold. Certain modules can be pushed out to provide ventilation, while a group can be swung open to provide access to the interior. The shack acts as a stop where bikers can congregate and share information about paths or parts. The building seems as though it has fallen from the sky and landed in the middle of the park and acts as a monolith. Reservoir The Reservoir is the result of the study of the Honey Ant and it’s habits. The honey ant stores and releases nutrients for its colony and hangs from the top of the ant tunnel chambers. The function of the building is a trade market, where traders hang their items from the tunnel processing floors to the gallery floors beneath them. The processing zone is to act like the ant tunnels, while the gallery zone is to act as the great hall chamber of an ant habitat. The site for this building is located directly next to the Green Line of the Chicago El on Lake Street. The train helps to dictate the trading cycles as its noise, light, and vibrations disturb mobile panels that signal transition and flood the urban environment into the gallery space.

Zhengzhou This competition project from Cordogan and Clark Associates was an urban planning project located in the Henan province of China. The project covered over twenty sq. kilometers of land. The Design was inspired by a chinese pinwheel that takes on the shape of the central green and water space. A subway, water taxi, bus route, and cross country train transportation hubs connect this city to itself and to the fast growing central lands of China. There is ample open space to accomodate the government, financial, residential, consumer, and commericial districts. This urban zone acts an oasis in central China to encourage cross national movement while linking new cities to old ones.

Miller Arts Center As a design concept, we decided to display the process of making not just the product. This addressed the problem we established in Miller Beach, Gary Indiana - that of isolation, non-community and a general lack of knowledge of all that the arts district had to offer. The solution thus would be to get the community more involved and more aware by displaying their proud local artists through workshops, lectures and classes. This would be a place where local schools could hold after school classes, where week ends would see community hosted workshops, and where an expression unique to Miller’s history and residents could be displayed for all. Coiling doors allow each workshop to be opened to the sidewalk, creating a cohesive connection to the public realm.

Fuel House In the West Englewood neighborhood of Chicago’s south side, empty lots and vacant homes destroy the social fabric. I developed a prototype home that would engage the home with the street, provide a new way of living and restore community interaction. The Fuel House is organized around a roof top green house and chicken coupe, that provide the residents with a food source in the current urban food desert. Proximity to the rooftop green houses reorganizes typical housing stratification, the kitchen is placed at the second story beneath the chicken coupe and is oriented towards the sidewalk to create almost constant views to the outside world. At double wide empty lots, community gardens are paired with the Fuel House to facilitate community integration. A vertical conveyor mechanism, allows the residents to offer chicken eggs to passerbys to stimulate socializing.

Dynamic Structure In our final strucutres class, we choose to build Calatrava’s Athens Olympic roof structure for our dynamic structural model project. The model is 8’ x 4’ x 2’ in size and is constructed of pvc, wood, acrylic, metal hooks, steel cable and fishing line and weights. The model was built to be dynamic, meaning that when acted upon by a force, it would react as it would in the real structure. The main types of forces at place are axial, shear and torsion. The axial force is represented in the tensile cables that act as pin connections to increase cantilevers of trusses which are cladded by a roof membrane. The torsion tubes allow the strucutre to remain stable and responsive to lateral and vertical loading. The strucutre has a free span of 304 meters.

University District The South Loop region of Chicago presents much opportunity for future developments. Adjacent to the central busines district, the dense urban fabric begins to thin physically and socially. Surface parking lots and parking garage dominate the pedestrian scale experience. Higher education institutions have breathed new life by repurposing vacant and historical landmark buildings while also constructing new facilities. This area is naturally becoming a large metropilation cluster of higher education institutions, one of the largest in the world. Nearly 60,000 students attend these instituions yearly, however almost 80 percent are commuter students. Thus we experience an area that is only active cyclically. The area is transit rich, which means it will be able to sustain increased density. Our plan includes using surface parking lots for new shared higher educational buildings, increasing on campus living density and the pedestrification of Wabash Avenue and the integration into a larger master plan.

University District Fragmented Continuity As a part of the University District master plan, this transit oriented development includes student housing, student amenity, labs/classrooms, conference/exhibition and a re-imagination of the notorious El tracks. The hybrid lecture tower is shared by all higher education institutions in the South Loop along with the student housing towers. Towers are broken up in to Macro fragments to allow for green and public space that reconnect the users with nature in the sky. The hybrid lecture tower uses the slope nature of the lecture hall to define its geometry and green spaces. The transit rich environment allows for such a large scale intervention. The project is realized along the Wabash linear quad, envisioned in the previous master plan. The project enforces the pedestrian experience on the Wabash Linear quad by providing a diversity of living and learning facitilies which stimulate year round and around the clock activity. The El train tracks are brought into the 21st century by critiquing them as antiquated post industrial infrastructure. The way people experience travel on the train, experience it now through a lense of handheld computers that fragment the journey into a series of being able to be any place at any time on demand through a display. This fragmented abstraction is envisioned by the proposed concourse above the El as a series of unprogrammed pavillions that refract sunlight to the dark spaces beneath El and illuminate at night. These represent the complicated multi frame experience that exists on public transportation because of the handheld computer.

C.D. Examples The following sample represent my most extensive involvements in projects at Cordogan Clark & Associates Inc, in the design development and construction document phases. Beginning my internship after my junior year of my undergraduate studies, I quickly adapted into the professional environment. Soon, I was able to development nearly complete sets of construction documents with our project teams under the supervision of project managers. My experiences at Cordogan Clark & Associates Inc. continues to evolve into more comprehensive roles in the design process.

From an early age, I developed a passion for cinematography, music and photography. Early endeavors included making stop motion videos with my Lego, Playmobil sets and broadcasting a short segment on a local television network. Photography allows me to catch my perspective of the environment around me and share it with others. Time Lapse photography has become a new fascination, allowing me to see what cannot be seen by the human eye. Through time lapse photography, the true nature of you environment is revealed. Photography will continue to be an evolving hobby of mine and a tool that allows me to show the world to others as it is seen through my eyes.
