Sea levels are said to rise in San Francisco, and as this happens in 2050, residents will also have to move upwardwe’ll be living higher, driving higher, working higher, and playing higher. While we move the ground plane higher, we will also reutilize the earth below- building through the ground, burrowing and tunneling. Our scene design reflects this concept by showing these two contrasting spaces- the notions of building up high and down below. One half of the scene emulates the open-air park environment, similar to what will be seen at the TransBay roof park, or the HighLine in New York. We envision this space to be calm, airy and light-filled. The design reflects this with elevated platforms for people to relax in, lighter finishes, a green wall covering the back, and plants all around reminiscent of the elevated park setting. This is contrasted by our ‘underground tunnel’. This is semi-enclosed structure of the underground world, covered with dark finishes, interactive mossy walls, and moody lighting, to engender the feeling of the futuristic, tech world. The two spaces have portals into one another, and have access to one another, signifying their co-existence and harmony.

San Francisco, an ever growing and changing city. As we move toward a more technology driven society, we are also trying to find ways to experience nature within this concrete jungle. We have Dolores Park, Golden Gate Park, and The Presidio. But as this city continues to densify and technology permeates into our lives more and more, this access to nature may could very much disappear. In the future how are we to access nature? What is the relationship between nature and techonology in our everyday life?

Scene 3 Local Connections

As technology evolves, futuristic visions from the 1950s have become everyday reality in 2050. Autonomous transportation has become the norm, but it’s not a onesize-fits-all approach. Headed to the office? Summon an on-demand executive office or eclectic meeting room. Leaving town? Enjoy a cozy living space, family activity room, or mobile yoga studio. Upon arrival at your destination the local transit hub serves as a landmark gathering place, allowing for impromptu work spaces and areas for play. Your city’s streets — free of congestion and pollution — have been adapted to serve as dynamic public spaces for exploration, innovation, and interventions of nature. Our scene creates a vision of this neighborhood transit hub and poses three questions: • What does the autonomous transportation experience of the future look like? • How does the transportation center of the future function? • What role does design play on the streets of a smart city?

Scene 4 T.E.C.H. Transportaion, Efficiency, Connectivity & Habitation

Transportation, Efficiency, Connectivity & Habitation! The Bay Area will have grown is size & population, but while people will be living & working great distances from each other they will connected both physically, through efficient transportation, and virtually through advanced technology and connectivity. The modern habitat will be a seamless blend of life activi-ties where each person has their own place to live, work, eat & sleep in a personal micro-sized, self-contained pod. Sin-gular, but part of a collective that stretches over all the Bay Area - San Francisco, North Bay, South Bay & East Bay. Each area connected physically by transportation and virtually by technology, but each area still with its own individuality. We took inspiration initially from a future map of BART that showed a vastly expanded service area. The multiple train lines looking like computer circuitry and representing the technology that keeps people connected and allows them their singularity at the same time. The installation uses four cubes to represent the four areas of the Bay Area. Each cube is lit with a different color, representing its unique qualities. Paths on the ground, representing both transportation and technology, connect the cubes. Each cube also represents the micronization of the personal habitat of the future.

As waters rise, our city will face challenges with an encroaching sea and the adapting flora and fauna that emerge with it. Join us in the year 2050, where San Franciscans have learned to live with these creatures and take advantage of new underwater landscapes. Inspired by the textures and light quality of the sea, we’ve manifested its organic nature in a built environment that blurrs thresholds between land and water. Utilizing translucency and reflectance in materials, light is filtered through the space to create a depth that mimics the ocean. This sense of inundation pairs with artifacts of the land to bring the visitor into the future of an amphibious city-San Francisco 2050.

FOOD RUNNERS The mission of Food Runners is to help alleviate hunger in San Francisco, to help prevent waste and to help create community. Food Runners is currently delivering over 15 tons of food a week that would otherwise be thrown away. With help from our volunteer coordinator, our paid truck driver and people like you, we can provide enough food for over 10,000 meals every week in San Francisco. In 1987, founder Mary Risley with a small group of concerned professionals came up with a simple idea: donate food from those who have too much to those who have too little. She persuaded some colleagues in the food industry to save their excess food, which she and a few friends picked up in their cars and delivered to local shelters and food programs. Today, Food Runners has over 250 active volunteers, and more than 450 restaurants, caterers, grocery stores, farmers’ markets and other businesses regularly donate perishable and prepared foods Please visit www.foodrunners.org for more information.
