object for performance The goal for this project is to provide an outdoor performance space in Wicker Park as well as a recording studio. The building will need to function efficiently for both purposes. Instead of providing a single space that adapts to both uses (and potentially weakens the value of the spaces), the recording studio was pushed into the earth, allowing performances to take place on the roof. To enlose the performance space, a bandshell was designed to envelop the roof of the recording studio (the stage) and provide a backdrop for performances. The structure of the recording studio is essentially a cast-in-place concrete box. The bandshell is a series of glulams with wood lateral supports in between each glulam. The stage functions as a public space when performances are not taking place. To accomodate this, a railing system was designed to be raised and lowered from the stage.

waterfront terminus The West Gateway of New Harmony has suffered recently due to the closing of the toll bridge. This was previously the most direct route to and from Illinois. The gateway itself still holds a lot of potential for activity, however. With it’s proximity to the Wabash River and future connection to Harmonie State Park, recreation seeking individuals will be drawn to the space. The project goals are to provide a retail and rental facility aimed at increasing the activity along the Wabash River and in New Harmony. This project also creates a terminus at the end of the Church Street axis; redefining the West Gateway. A central courtyard is created by the 2 juxtaposed program spaces; blending inside and outside with the surrounding landscape. West of the terminus, the site subtly slopes down to the river and the individual is allowed to venture his or her way to the waterfront.

o bj ect fo r kn ow i n g Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge offers a wide range of experiences because of the vastness of the site. The purpose of this project is to connect different scales of experiences. Located near Goofy Ridge, the site offers expansive views to the south and an intimate wooded area to the north. These two locations are currently disconnected because of a waterway that runs between them. This project aims to connect these two points on the site; allowing people to experience two significant aspects of Chautauqua. Beginning with a regular pattern of structural frames, the visitors center (object for knowing) bridges across the waterway allowing visitors to safely travel across. By choosing to place a regular linear pattern on the site, the irregularities of the landscape are highlighted.

c o u rtya r d m u s eu m The site chosen for a dinosaur museum to be built in downtown Champaign presents several challenges and consequent opportunities. The challenge with a site such as this is to avoid the building feeling as long and narrow as the site actually is. Since the site is long and slender, an opportunity presents itself to create two seperate massings of structure while incorporating the feeing of one unified building. By splitting the structure into two seperate massings, a courtyard is created. The positive aspects to the courtyard include outdoor space, natural light, and natural ventilation. To provide the buildings with a sense of unity, both structures are equipped with large doors on the ground level that swing open on one axis, allowing people to travel easily between the two buildings weather permitted. Also incorporated is a bridge on the third floor connecting a rooftop courtyard to offices towards the rear of the site.

v i s ta a c t i vat i o n The site under investigation is a large open field located in Chicago. People feel invited onto the site because of its ground level accessibility and freedom to move throughout the space. The negative effect of a large open space such as this is that it is rarely wholly activated because of its scale. There are only small sections of activation on the large site and therefore much wasted green space. To fully activate a condition such as this there needs to be a creation of smaller scale spaces, which in turn create simultaneous moments of activity. The site as it sits is a valuable piece of land in a city like Chicago. Its value lies in its green openness and accessibility. The problem lies in its scale and activation. To fully utilize a site such as this, a condition should be developed where there is little loss of green space and a development of smaller scale moments. In breaking up the site into smaller segments with a variation of scale, elevation, enclosed and open spaces, the site can be activated more comfortably.

wo o d wo r k i n g Working in the woodshop at the University of Illinois has provided me with a learning experience centered on full scale assemblies and appropriate use of materials. A project in the woodshop, such as a peice of furniture or an instrument, is approached in the same way a designer approaches an architectural problem. The scale may be different but many of the factors remain the same. Attention to detail, connections, materiality, constructability, etc. all play a vital role in a succesful project.
