BRIEF 02 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

BEN LEGGETT GRAPHIC DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER 2013

TYPE/ SHAPE/ RHYTHM/ COLOUR/ IMAGE/ SCALE/ FORM/ TONE/

Part_01/ The Brief/ I am to experiment with the relationship between music and design, using the words on the opposing page as a medium. The outcome should be challenging, experimental, emotive, engaging, immersive and sensory. I should avoid being overly literal or cliche about how I present each of the elements. My target audience are Graphic Designers, Art Directors who love music and musicians who appreciate design. The final outcome should be a 1080p piece of motion design (or vice versa). It should be experimental and demonstrate the highest possible standard of typography, imagery and sound.

Plan/ Order of workflow: Part 1/ Brief Clarification, Research, Brainstorming. Part 2/ Initial development, thumbnails etc. Part 3/ Refined thumbnail choices, feedback. Part 4/ Further feedback and modification. Part 5/ Resource Gathering/sourcing. Part 6/ Prototype Development . Part 7/ Feedback of prototype. Part 8/ Development of Final Piece. Part 9/ Completion of Final piece and conclusion.

This piece doesn’t really have any focus on text but it is a great piece of rhythmic design, the liquids turning solid and then back again are smoothly synced with the harshly changing music.

This video has a brilliant sense of playful fun between the music and visuals and the text used is very well judged, it doesn’t focus on rhythm but it is still a very well put together piece.

I am a big fan of these kinetic type music videos and this one is a great example, the level of synchonicity between music and type is brilliant and lively.

Clement always achieve a perfect “theme” in his pieces, all of them no matter how mundane are involving in some way, atmospheric almost.

This piece masters the relationship between image, sound and rhythm - The visual elements appear as if they are being created by the music and sound.

The Alphabet

New York Biotopes.

By N9VE http://vimeo.com/18499580 This is a very stylistic piece, I like the animated handwriting and the kind of old style camera blur and filter leak marks simulated over the old paper texture mixed with the old timey music makes it very thematic and atmospheric.

By Lena Steinkuhler http://vimeo.com/58449984 This piece has a brilliant use of both style and audio/visual sync. The use of colour and composition make a very well judged visual experience and the audio elements are perfectly connected with the visuals.

Where things come from.

I Need Nothing

I really like how simple this one is, its very clean and colourful and has a ambient feeling to it.

This one has a great sense of craft about it, its been achieved through just photography and editing yet it has great use of typography and rhythm.

Lamento.

Nokta.

I really liked this one, it has such a perfect sync between music and visuals, its almost as if the animation is a visualisation effect that you get in media players, but its obviously more artistic and creative than a visualiser from an old media player.
