Rationale (200 words) My design context will revolve around the developing nature of my design practice with each informing each other in turn. When questions arise in my practice I will research the relevant areas to overcome the problems, likewise, if I find something out researching that changes how I am design I will amend my practice accordingly. Areas that I am constantly reading related material and following feeds for include typeface design, layout and grid, new media and software, information design and branding. It is important to know what is going on in contemporary graphic design especially relating to my specialist areas.

Proposed research Areas & Themes - (400 words) TYPEFACE DESIGN The release of new typefaces will feature as part of my research to inform my practice of current trends and formats. Type houses such as Hoefler & Frere-Jones and House Industries. LAYOUT AND GRID Researching layout specific to subject matters will help inform the relevance in my practice. Both contemporary and historical layout will influence my practice in different ways. Looking at influential figures in layout such as the work Ruth Ansel did for Bazaar and the work Paul Pensom has done for Creative Review. These different areas and styles make up the evolving graphic language used in layout and my design practice should reflect considerations of this. NEW MEDIA & SOFTWARE New technology is reinventing how we communicate on a regular basis, having an up to date knowledge of platforms and how they are used and distributed will help me make decisions about what the best-suited outcome is to a brief. My dissertation will help inform this part of my context with an analytical view of how technology is changing the way we read.
