My name is James Bennett and I am currently a Masters Student at Victoria Universities’ School of Design, having completed a bachelor’s degree in Design Innovation. I have always taken an interest in the creative work that WETA Workshop has produced throughout the years, mixing traditional craft and emerging technologies. I am seeking an opportunity in the design and creative team so that I can best use my talents that I have acquired through my years of learning and shaping my skills. I believe that I have suitable qualities that would benefit WETA, as I know a range of programs and technologies that are both old and new. I am also a hard worker, easy going and enjoy working either solo or collaboratively. My particular interests lay in the process of creation personally, as my last year of work has seen me look more deeply into rapid prototyping and expanding the boundaries of what is possible with hi-tech and lo-tech machines. Working heavily with Makerbot and UP! 3D printers I have been able to produce quality prototypes, from the ordinary to the almost impossible, finishing them to a high standard with post processing so that models could be seen at an affordable price. I have also worked with Objet’s’ Connex 350 in collaborative projects where I have used the new ‘ dual material’ technology to create inflatable prints that start in a 2D form and make 3D shapes, and also working with Marine Biologists to rehouse Paua into new bio-compatible 3D printed resin shells. At the moment I am looking at replicating organs with the body through 3D printing so that we can closely look at internal mechanics. Aside from working with digital creation I enjoy working with physical models and sketching, as it doesn’t quite beat the computer in terms of quickly outputting ideas to my colleagues. My current thesis looks at CNC manufacturing and creating digital craft out of the uniformity of mass production, an explorative journey into a new paradigm shift. If I was considered for a position I would gladly negotiate to either suspend or continue my thesis, continuation would mean better skills, but any opportunity at WETA is something not to be missed. Please take a look my work and I hope you enjoy. Thank you.
