Design Brief The notion of to be urban, or in other words of being situated in a city becomes rather interesting with the digital forms of cities designed by pure quantities: data. Strangely, todays abundant information inverses the foresight of an immaterialist city. The completed anthropomorphic scenography of our environments reverses as you look to its main driving ingredient. Data becomes the missing link between the human and inhuman parts of the city as it makes things talk by pointing to its origin and author: the technical being. Here the role of architecture becomes crucial, as digital cities are always localized in their quantities, their parts and their architecture.
To be urban as being situated in a city is a form of enquiry into the coexistence of human and inhuman parts. A city described by its quantities offers a posthuman agenda for architecture and its city, which overcomes the humanist rift between mass and void; between on the one hand the city as productive mass: the wall, the grid, the globe, the object and on the other hand the city as the void for the flaneur, the parkour, the event. This inquiry on the architecture of the city does not measure the city in the semantic sense that is, as political intervention between a subject and an object: as Metropolis, but by the resonance of its parts, by its mereological complicity: as Large City.
The W(A)OnderYard is the architectural design project that investigates the relation between courtyards and inddividual architectural parts, including stairs, windows, floors and roofs. In this case the courtyards is no more than the void space but also the composition of architectural parts which are mentioned above. Different relations to courtyard would enrich the notion of the courtyard space.
The typical architectural parts - stairs, windows, floors and roofs have diifferent roles to courtyard. Stairs has the strong orientation tendency which could be the navigation
6
of the courtyard. The connection of stairs is one of the most imporant issue to digital logic. In addition, the stairs navigation would enrich the arrangment and order of courtyard. The windows could bring sun shading and insulation for the courtyard. Due to its transparency, it would extend or limit the possiblity of space. The floors and roofs would be the mandatory parts. Both could be removeable or exhchangeable.
In current stage the project already had sketch plan of how it would develop. The digital logic should be found out in the future. To enrich the notion of space is still keep working for now. The implementation of this project would be the courtyard space in large city scale that is homogeneous and heterogeneous with porosity.

W(A)OnderYard Sampling Courtyards Notion of Courtyard
Typology - Courtyard
In general view, courtyard is the void space that is surrounded by building volume. However, during this project the courtyard is no longer the void space but also the composition of different architectural parts, including stairs, roofs, floors and windows. Different parts would define or influence the notion of the courtyard as well.

Courtyard to Stair
Stairs is an architectural part with strong orientation tendency. It would provide the continiuty of space. In this case the stairs would bring the navigation that explores the courtyard with different orders and arrangements. The orders and arrangements would enrich the notion of the courtyard. The connection of stairs is the important issue that influences the digital approach. To find out the connection point of stairs could be the first step of digital logic of the project. The stairs provide a continious path that would project on digital generation.

Courtyard to Windows
Windows could be the media that achieves "in between" space. Compared to the stairs, windows do not have the possiblity of connection. However, it could be the part of walls, part of roofs and part of floors. Windows could create both extension space and limitation space. Extension Space The diagram 1 shows the semi open space surrounded by three windows. In this case the red area is the courtyard space affected by windows. Due to the transparency of windows, people could not across the windows to the courtyard. They could see the space by eye sight from there to here. Windows create the ambiguity space that cannot step into or touch. That is the extension space. Limitation Space Windows could shape and limit the courtyard space. Compared to stairs, stairs coud be connected by each others. However, windows could enrich the arrangement which is no longer connect ever part. The seperate space would add private space and public space. Diagram 2 shows the intitial notion of arrangement of windows with penetration of sight. In addition, the combination of stairs and windows would enrich the arrangement and navigation in urban rules.

Floors are the mandatory parts of the project, which is the basic element of the courtyard. There are three functions that floors biring to courtyard - Division, Defination and Limitation. Different sizes & proportions of floors could divide and limit the space of courtyard. Floors also define the intial notion of the courtyard as well.

Spatial Continuity
“Transparency means a simultaneous perception of different spatial locations. Space not only recedes but fluctuates in a continuous activity (Kepes quoted in Rowe & Slutzky, 1982) The concepts and conditions of transparency parallel movements of Relativity theories and their implications; where space-time relativistic thinking allows for two objects to co-exist simultaneously in the same space and time, as such transparency is a spacetime condition of betweeness, a simultaneous perception of space. To investigate a merging of storeys and spaces into a contiguous and continuous space.

It delllonstrates the virtues of a transparent form-organization: multiple readings, complexity in unity, ambiguity and clarity, involvement of the user who chooses and connects through participation, tangible meaning in terms of geometry. To investigate these issues, arrange the cases that make the windows face to inside, enclosure a new public courtyard. Create the ray for the windows. The ray was stopped to opposite wall/window/case. The new courtyard growing can growing constantly follow this process.

Extraction Parts of Mereology
The previous research of courtyards in different relations indicate the different notions influenced by architectural parts. The notion is promising and clear. However, it should be more clean and specific comparing to the extraction. The next step is to redefine the courtyard by specific parts from the research courtyards extraction. The first step is extracting one specific part such as windows, stairs, walls, floors and balconies. Secondly, using quantities of parts to create new courtyard space. The new courtyard would have much diverstiy depend on the arrangement of a number of parts. Many typologies of courtyard would be created from small & medium scale to large scale composition.
