Forming Finding: Wind 4
Yardangs; rocks which have been eroded by the wind, by the proccess of sand abrasion.
Wind Erosion Experiment: using two types of sand, one course and one fine, we blasted a form made from plastacine covered with sand with more sand using a hair dryer.
The Resultant Form
Clay Iterations: a series of models showing the changes of an object from a normal cube to a dynamic abstract form, by taking away a certain amount of clay with the same principle wind would erode a rock.
Sandblasting: a quick way to see the effects of wind erosion, on one rock and an arrangement of rocks.
Digital Models: working in 3Ds Max to form the eroded rocks, starting with a series of layers which change throughout the form, then working with curved surfaces to form more simplified shapes looking at where the wind would have eroded.

Massing on Site: looking at where the housing should be placed on the site to allow for the best views from the Millenium Stadium to Cardiff Central train station.
The Flow: looking at how people would use and cross the site, thinking of the people as wind or water, as they are eroding the easiest path through the site. Then the landscaping the site, eroding down, as well as having green areas where there is less erosion, places to stop and rest.
Precedent Study: Bear Lane by PanterHudspith, taking some inspiration for stepping the housing units back from the Giant Causeway. A similar idea as in my design, as I am trying to step it up from the two storey train station and away from the Millenium Stadium.
Early Master Planning: Making the units individual, to allow for them stepping back and for the wind to flow through the site.

Ground Floor First Floor
1:100 Model of a Secomd Floor
1:50 Unit Model: This is the initial model for the unit, at this point I was working with two facade elements, one being exposed and the other being inclosed, piblic and private. This unit also including a glass wall with the stairs hanging of it.
Facade Experiment: After the interim crit, I decided to add a third facade element which was an inbetween version of the other two. This became a system of window louvres which would extend into the unit forming the stairs and a book shelf with places to sit inside it.

Master Planning: Changing the master plan by going back to the early ideas of wind erosion and eroding the units to form areas of exposure and cutting out entrances for inclosure.

Alternative Circulation: After the final crit looked at instead of having platforms and individual units have a series of towers and walkways.
