Design a product to add greater enjoyment, convenience or functionality to domestic household chores.

One Week Brief

User Research User

Task

User has to often balance multiple cooking times for meal components.

Environment

The kitchen can be a place for relaxation however can easily become an area of stress and mistakes. Kitchen can become dirty, wet and sticky.

Resource Reduction

Combine multiple products into a specific utensil to reduce additional resources.

Designing for product longevity.

Reduce accidents and associated resources.

“Increased satisfaction via the use of quantitative feedback data within the cooking experience. Results in less energy consumption, less cleaning and an increased sense of achievement.

CAD Prototype

Sp端 n. Smart technology in the kitchen. Sp端 n is a multifunctional kitchen utensil for food preparation. Focusing on reducing stress and wasted enery within the kitchen.

Initially a project on sustainable design, I chose to engineer the brief to create an object that promotes sustainability through the use of social alterations. Sp端n

is designed as the go to utensil in the kitchen. Providing quantitative data feedback, my objective was to create a social dependence

upon the product. Quantitative

data providing a mental relief for the user, lifting the weight and reducing the stress of the meal from their shoulders.

Spoon doubles as a monitor for pots and pans. Leaving the spoon resting over the pan, two nodes can detect a change in current caused by contact from over-boiling. Sp端n can then alert you to the problem before the pan boils, avoiding additional unnecessary clean up and associated resources.

designs lead to the development of a smart tablet chopping board. But wanting to push myself further I chose Refinement Initial micro projectors to display relevant information such as recipes and tutorials to the user. also doubles as a UV Steriliser for kitchen utensils.

sketch modelling using foam was used to determine a 3D form of the design. It was also useful for making MODEL Initial adjustments to ergonomic features and proportions. Following sketch modelling a visual representation model was produced in polyurethane. MANUFACTURE

Kitchen rags are statistically 200,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat. UV sterilisation can kill up-to

99.99% of

bacterial. UV is activated via the detection of the metal blade. This eliminates the need to touch and contaminate the product.

Projection of information eliminates smudges and smears on screens. A secondary IR projection can pick up where the user is touching on the surface. This gives Souchef the same interaction capabilities as existing familiar technology.

USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN Implementing Game mechanics into the shopping experience, benefiting the local economy and small buisnesses.

Initial concept development and User Task Environment Analysis

Primary research. I like to take a hands on approach. For this user I attached a chest mounted GoPro™ to capture his interaction with products and his thoughts.

Concept refinement incorperating wearable technology

Utilising physical activity to unlock discounts and promotions at local venues and buisnesses. Promoting the local economy and a healthier lifestyle.

Combination of paper sketch prototyping and PopApp™ used to refine layout and user interaction.

Wire frame mock up demonstraits proposed visual outcome. Used for promotional purposes before app production or prototyping.

Videographer

Initially a hobby, videography is something that I thoroughly enjoy. Monetising my skills, I have worked with X factor contestants and Geordie Shore stars to produce multiple promotional videos for clubs. I have also lead a successful video campaign for the Loughborough Students Union Presidential Election. I am currently expanding my skill set and advancing my knowledge of animation and 3D rendering. www.youtube.com/user/ben7321

Painting Originally a pastime, I have worked as a freelance portrait painter for the past 4 years. I like to work with the client to achieve a mutually admired piece; This has given me strong people skills doing this.
