Heng-Yi, Lin (Benson) is an interior designer from Taiwan and finished his MA Narrative Environment at Central Saint Martins in London. During his MA, he furthered his career with an internship as an assistant at Aberrant Architecture. During this time, he has learned the difference between western and eastern design cultures. Before Heng-Yi came to Europe, he worked for Ling Feng interior design studio and lead the 3D design team; he participated in diverse projects, inculding the restaurant, residence and bookstore sectors. Now Benson has moved back to Taiwan and works at Mastermind Partners Architecture. The completed studies and associate experiences have changed his focus to finding the connection between storytelling and interior design, thus creating a broader perspective on his interior design works.

This is a residential project in Xindian, Taipei. The building is fifty years old and our assignment is the fouth and fifth floors. Notably the fifth floor is a rooftop addition; consequently there is an opportunity to design the high ceiling space effectively. The clients are eight people, which includes a couple, three children, the husband's sister and their grandparents.

The first direction is penetration and the second one is reusing. Glass and iron materials were selected to build a half-opened partition for connecting spaces on the fourth floor. In addition, the external tile was conserved to reinterpret the residence’s existing features, increase the height and add a hidden storage on the fifth floor.

As far as the material selection is concerned, Chinese ash, black walnut and iron are the main elements throughout entire space. Broken filament surface steel, cement, brass, terrazzo tiles are utilised in public spaces. Hexagonal tiles are presented in four toilets. For the colour scheme, brown, black and gray were choosen to compose a rough and natural feeling.

In order to make the space penetrative, the use of iron element as the stairs structure was considered. Initially three methods to re-build it were considered, with a view to extending the depth of each stair tread. Finally, it was decided to only remove the wall, thereby preserving the structure, and to cover it with wooden material.

Architect's style The building was designed by the Olson Kundig firm and the architect is Jim Olson. The principle concept behind his works is that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people; furthermore, that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on peoples' lives.
Current situation The building was under construction when we commenced participation in this project and the day of completion of the house was projected to be by the end of December 2015. By that time, it was only a shell, consisting of cement flooring, and without any painting or furnishings. The main thrust of our mission is in using the high and large windows to reflect the value of the building.

Oasis is a British global fashion brand with a target audience directed towards young girls. This time, one of their shops, which is located between Oxford Circus and Liberty in London, set up a competition for a window display design for 2014 February fashion week in our course. They hoped to get a completely fresh and new idea compared to before. Five groups joined this competition and in the end they liked all five ideas. Therefore, they brought the five ideas as their seasonal window display.

This was my BA graduation design and worked with two colleagues. We chose a deserted old construction site for our project base and designed how to plan for its reuse. With the consideration of location, background, and four significant time periods, we designed a hotel with a concept of ribbons, "tying" historic time frames and culture into one venue. International guests can gain a slight understanding of the culture, history, and people of Taiwan.

The history of building The building was constructed in 1912 during the Japanese Occupation Period, as a warehouse for the tobacco monopoly. In 1980, it became Taiwan Bus Transportation Corporation North Station. In 2001, Taiwan Bus was privatized and renamed KuoKuang Motor Transportation Corp. The building was in use until 2005. It is now rectified by the government as a historical site.
The business district surrounding Taipei Train Station is the core of the transportation of Taipei City. As a landmark, Taipei Train Station is where the exchange-transfer centre of national highways, Taiwan Railways and Taiwan High Speed Rail meet. Q Square Shopping Centre was just opened. All these are changing the life style in the business circle around Taipei Train Station.

PURPOSE
C O N C E P T
Convert this traffic hub into an art & cultural hotel, in order to add an element of cultural sophistication to the modern and trendy atmosphere of this business district.
The concept "ribbon" connects the past, present and future elements of the building in the windows and interior spaces. The new design is about an art & culture hotel, with new looks to interpret past culture. The first floor will be dedicated to art galleries, exhibitions, restaurants and bars. The second floor will accommodate specialist travel agents. Our inspirations came from a TV drama about the Paramount, the most famous night club of Shanghai in its early days. Shanghai transformed a large number of foreign elements in culture and architecture into something of its own.

I learned how to take care of details in design practice. This project is the French Teppanyaki restaurant under Wang Steak, aiming to create a Teppanyaki restaurant different from the Japanese ones in the marketplace.

Chamonix reversed the traditional image of smokes and oiliness of typical Teppanyaki restaurants by combining the French cuisine and Teppanyaki. It aims to create a romantic French atmosphere and opens up a new chapter in the history of Teppanyaki. Customers can watch how chefs perform their culinary art and enjoy the delicacy as soon as possible. Chefs can also maintain good interactions with customers and listen to their feedback. Chamonix strives to provide an elegant style of services.

Fo Guang Shan is an important location in Taiwan, known for admirable religious practices.
This design is based on the imagery of a lotus in Buddhism and the book by Ven. Master Hsing Yun, “Bright Star, Luminous Cloud: Life of a Simple Monk. Growing out of mud, the lotus blooms pure and untainted. Bright star and luminous cloud represent the continuation of space and time, a symbol of the Buddhist spirit and salvation for the suffering. This bookstore hopes to shed light to the directions for all the visitors who feel confused in life or to regain calmness.
