HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ADDING TO THE CHARACTER OF A LONG -STANDING SUBURB?
Hawthorn is one of Melbourne’s surviving bastions of post-Gold Rush expansion and is now one of Melbourne’s most affluent and influential suburbs. The area contains an exceptional number of individual buildings of historical and architectural merit including Victorian-era mansions as well as large Federation and inter-war-era dwellings.
HOW HAS YOUR DESIGN RESPONDED TO ITS SURROUNDINGS?
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE FINAL DESIGN OF ST JAMES PARK?
We’ve taken cues from the leading international architectural movements of the last century. From the striking and sensitively conceived facade to the stately and welcoming nature of the foyer and shared interior zones, we have created a contemporary and timeless architectural design. Our bespoke detailing features authentic materials such as stone, glass and steel.
The design is characterised by variety in space and volume, and carefully considered, minimalist, design features with crisp bespoke detailing. Coupled with functional planning. The result is a series of modern and luxurious new homes which stand confidently in a precinct with a rich history of architectural opulence. The realised residences are suitable for the most discerning and design conscious owner.

WHAT DRIVES YOUR DESIGN APPROACH?
The residential interiors at St James Park feature materials that have stood the test of time – beautiful timber and natural stone set against a custom palette of classic neutral tones.
When we designed the St James Park residential interiors, we focused on two key elements for these; the planning of the spaces – to create a very modern elegant design that compliments the architecture, and the quality of the materials. Good planning will deliver a functional home, a place where residents can live their lives in comfort and ease – with good storage, for example, and with flexibility in how space is used.
FOR YOU, WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE ST JAMES PARK PROJECT?
With a focus on maximising spaces, both in functionality and style, St James Park features elegant and minimal joinery that works harmoniously to emphasise the beautifully large proportions of the residences. The homes are unusually generous so we’ve made use of this with, for example, beautiful joinery details, shelving and fireplaces. The design combines a timeless neutral background with soft highlights of timber and marble. We’ve created quality spaces that give each residence a sense of space and ownership whilst allowing each resident to have the convenience of living in a multi-residential setting.

YOU DESCRIBE DESIGN AS A BALANCING ACT – WHAT BALANCE WERE YOU LOOKING FOR HERE?
Each project is individual, with its own unique challenges and demands. Our design approach is about finding the right balance. On one hand, we need to meet the expectations of a home’s future occupants. And on the other hand, we have to work with the constraints and opportunities of the setting. In this case, the setting offers a unique opportunity – the splendid views across St James Park.
GARDENS AND BALCONIES ARE OFTEN PLACES OF PRIVATE ENJOYMENT. HOW HAVE YOU DELIVERED THAT HERE?
The parkside location is special, offering delightful north-facing views that can never be built out. This means the outdoor terraces will always have access to available sunlight, from summer through to winter. The leafy terraces are a visual link between public park and private residence, but they’re also a place where occupants can experience the natural world in a secluded way.
HOW DID THE PARKSIDE LOCATION INFLUENCE YOUR APPROACH?
Residents will have the benefit of their own outdoor terrace but also will enjoy being able to visit St James Park for a stroll, to experience nature and to picnic on the lawn. With so much open space on residents’ doorsteps, the terrace gardens don’t need to meet every recreational need. Our design imagines light and spacious zones perfectly equipped for both private entertainment and relaxation purposes.
