NFRASTRUCTURE investment in the inner-west is helping to gentrify the popular suburb of Footscray. From its sought after location close to the city to its thriving shops, cafes and restaurants, the western suburb is becoming the place to be. Bensons Property Group national director of developments Brett Howlett said Footscray had a great growth story. “It has outstanding fundamentals: close to the CBD, easy transport options, parklands and government
infrastructure,” Mr Howlett said. “There is a long history of gentrification stories in inner city areas and Footscray is last cab off the rank.” The West Gate Tunnel project and a new $1.5 billion public hospital are significant infrastructure investments. Mr Howlett said the gentrification story was really important. “The area is evolving and drawing in a new culture, modern bars and eateries,” he said. Footscray is just 4km from the CBD or less than 10 minutes by train and about 15 minutes by bike. Historically an industrial and
migrant area, Footscray has become an increasingly sought after residential location that remains relatively affordable. The median house price in Footscray is $865,000, down 0.7 per cent in the past year, according to CoreLogic. Other suburbs the same distance from the CBD have much higher median house prices, including Carlton North at $1.42 million and Fitzroy North at $1,442,500. “Footscray is an exceptional location that is well below median
