_ In the latest preview from niggli publishers we provide you with a high quality program for your customers. Architecture and design are our main focal points this fall. In architecture we are following up the key areas of architects and modernist architecture, a focus which we set in 2013. We present a remarkable pioneer achievement in a new edition of a long out of print building documentation for a unique architectural monument, the University of Miséricorde in Freiburg; this represents a groundbreaking effort to bridge concrete classicism and the modern. In design too we are continuing our series on major Swiss personalities of this period, which we began last year with our monograph on Alfred Altherr. This fall we will present the Swiss designer and architect Klaus Vogt. We will also be presenting titles such as re-searching utopia and archithese "FUNdamental Palace" (5.2014) focused on the current dialog about the relevance of Utopias in architectural design practice – which also happens to be one of the main themes in this year’s Architecture Biennale – and we will also be contributing to the issue of material innovation and design techniques. Under these terms the editors of Holz: Stoff oder Form [ Wood – Material or Form Giver ] also discuss the relevance of timber today as a construction material in the field of tension that has arisen between its mutation from a natural building material to a high-tech construction product. 360° Industrial Design provides customers with a valuable manual on sustainable design processes, structured around contemporary product design from the idea through to implementation. We go back a step with Experimental Design – where the relationship between methodical work and creativity is explored for the first time in an illustrated book for specialists. We also have many other specialist works of great interest, which are presented on the following pages. Wood is one of the oldest materials in the history of building – and simultaneously one of the most modern. No other construction material has gone through such dynamic changes over the past few years as wood has: the disassembly and reorganization of the material as layered and fiber composites have made it technically far easier to handle, flexible and formally shapeable. It is now available as a construction material for abstract geometrical concepts and this in dimensions with practically no natural limitations. Firmly anchored in the construction images of the old natural material timber, wood has today reached far out into the range of structural possibilities other materials have offered and is thrusting its way forward as a highly practical replacement for them in building practice. The changes that have been brought about to its inner material composition are accompanied by exciting possibilities for design and forming. All of this has put wood firmly into its current position where from the interplay of a rustic natural material and a projection medium it has emerged as an ideal means for the realization of form concepts that are independent of materials. But on what laws of logic is construction with this hybrid material based, as it fluctuates between nature and culture? What is the dividing line here between the material and the form? This anthology questions the positions and perspectives of wood in the quandary of being caught in the space between identities and possibilities. The essays collected here bring the perspectives of architecture, the handicrafts, engineering, the arts, history, philosophy and anthropology. This book is the concluding result of a research project carried out by the Professor for Structural Design at the ETH Zurich. It is sponsored by the Department of Architecture and Federal Ministry of the Environment.

The great majority of architectural productions attempt to satisfy our everyday needs and to maintain the status quo of this basic requirement, an effort which is generally dubbed the state of the art. But architects of all times have simultaneously attempted to leave these limitations behind them and to propose entirely innovative paths, challenging the status quo of their environments and creating something entirely new. History has consistently demonstrated that Utopias have always been developed against the most varied backgrounds: Utopias have appeared as a reaction to crisis situations, as visions for a new start or as carriers for innovation. During the nineteen sixties and seventies in particular Utopias served as a source of inspiration for many architects. In the following decades Utopias continued to be a relevant issue in the humanities, but now tended to be pushed aside in architectural discourse. re-searching utopia sets out on a journey of discovery to find the contemporary role and possibilities offered by Utopias. The Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design of the Vienna University of Technology has asked personalities from various creative disciplines to reflect on this issue in the context of their professional experience. The book brings together a highly varied collection of texts, drawings and other illustrations, in which all of these highly varied approaches are presented.

The Clever Treefrog is the world’s first building with a bioreactor facade; it is a project that was realized for IBA Hamburg in 2013. This Janus-faced passive energy building was designed by the Graz architects SPLITTERWERK and the London engineer consultants Arup. The facades of the two sun sides of the building are covered with algae bioreactors and alternating red and white stripes. Microscopic algae organisms grow in glass photo-bioreactors, where they generate energy and simultaneously control the light and shade. The facade changes color as a result of the algae growth and through this gives the appearance of being "in motion" as a dynamic aspect of the architectural concept. Two giant speech bubbles written in black on a white background with the question "Photosynthesis?" followed by the answer "Cool!" can be read from the distance on two green facades with tiny windows. The architects have also transferred the building shell concept to the floor plan design: The multi-incidental shell elements are a switchable cladding structure with the effect strengthened by changing events, the "Hamburg Apartment" also features a multi-incidental shell of this kind, and with functions that can be switched "on demand". The net floor space of this condo is 64 m2 of which 46 m2 is a kind of functionally neutral zone, while the remaining space is used for the bathroom and WC, wardrobe, kitchen and a variety of storage space. The table, sofa and bed functions are an integral part of the space. All the functions can be switched and changed on a zone separate basis, with the result that the entire 46 m2 can be turned into a single big bathroom, kitchen, dining space or bedroom – when all of this potential is added up the condo occupant has a theoretically available net floor space of 368 m2.

_ Frankfurt 1950–1959 Architekturführer [ Architectural Guide ] _ This volume is the first of the Frankfurt Architectural Guides series dedicated to the recent architectural history of the city. Taking a decade-by-decade focus, the series begins in the nineteen fifties and the development of architecture is examined using 10 selected examples. The iconic works of the time are presented, some of which are either due to be demolished today, or are no longer standing. Volume 1 is dedicated to the Golden Hall of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation and the Junior, the Chemag and Bayer Buildings, the Market Hall, the Regional Finance Office, the Hauptwache Car Park, the Carl-Schurz School, the Oderweg residential building and the Heart of Mary Church. These were the work of young architects and builders who had established their businesses after returning from war service, including Gerhard Weber, Wilhelm Berentzen, Ernst Balser, the Blattner brothers, Max Meid and Helmut Romeick. The editors were supported in their work by prominent architecture critics, historians of art and design, conservationists and monument conservators. The current color photographs of the ten buildings are by the young Frankfurt photographer Georg Dörr and are placed in contrast with the black and white photos of Ursula Edelmann, the Grande Dame of post-war photography in Frankfurt. She photographed – the now demolished – Deutsche Genossenschaftsbank by Alfred Schild. The essay texts are by architecture critic Dieter Bartetzko, cultural studies scholar Gottfried Edelmann, art historian Almut Gehebe-Gernhardt, conservationist Astrid Hansen, designer and design historian Lore Kramer, architect BDA Rolf Schmidt, art historian Adrian Seib, conservator Stefan Timpe and architect BDA Franz Volhard.

_ Wilhelm E. Opatz, born 1962, graphic designer and publicist, studied interior architecture with Prof. Till Behrens, grandson of the architect Peter Behrens, after completing an apprenticeship as a bricklayer. Following a career as an advertising agency art director (GGK, Saatchi, Ogilvy) he opened his own graphic studio in Frankfurt in 1997. He designs exhibitions, art catalogs, graphic presentations for artists, art galleries and museums. The University of Miséricorde (built between 1937–1941) is an altogether wayward building project, which fascinates and irritates equally with its ambivalent appearance poised between the traditional and the modern. The architecture seeks to achieve a balance between a classicist tectonic approach and modern volumetric principles. This ambivalence is not only apparent in the appearance of the facility in its entirety, but also in each of the separate building sections, the rooms and the forms chosen for use and even in the technical implementation and in the choice of fittings. The young architect Denis Honegger (1907–1981), who produced the design and who was involved in the implementation with passionate intensity down to the smallest details, was well aware of this ambivalence. He allowed the architectural principles of both his great teachers, the modern classicist Auguste Perret and the modern avant-garde master Le Corbusier, flow into his work in a daring and altogether difficult balancing act. His outstanding achievement is the recasting of two contradictory concepts in an original synthesis. [Ch. Allenspach] This new edition of the building publication which appeared in 1941 includes new texts on the architecture and the engineering work, and one third of this dual language publication is dedicated to new photographic material. This commemorative volume includes extensive plans and illustrations together with explanatory essays on the architecture of Denis Honegger and Fernand Dumas, the structural physics work of Alexandre Sarrasin, Henri Gicot, Beda Hefti and Jean Barras and on the innovative contributions to acoustics, lighting, building technology and the integration of art in the building. The contributors include Christoph Allenspach, Sébastien Radouan, Eugen Brühwiler, Aloys Lauper and Claude Castella.

Who are the stakeholders here and what objectives are they pursuing? In the course of the financial crisis news reporting concentrated increasingly on questions of money flows and guarantees; the common interests which had been developed over many years disappeared behind the barriers of aggressively demonstrated renationalization tendencies. But in times of crisis with a construction industry at an almost total standstill in the southern countries of the continent from Portugal to Greece, the European structures in architecture also demonstrated that they could serve as the foundations for new projections and extended possibilities. Overcoming national borders in Europe has become much simpler as a result of developments such as the Erasmus Program, the rules on Europe-wide competitions, Europan and as a result of an increasingly multilingual younger generation. The European cultural scene is under great pressure and must find ways of asserting itself despite massive cuts, but nevertheless initiatives do exist – and also many programs, festivals and facilities that were established during the boom years continue to permit a European-wide exchange and promote the search for a creative exodus from the desert. archithese seeks the foundations for a European renewal, for a European culture that will find its expression in architecture.

_ 61 books with black type on white cover _ The designer Bernd Kuchenbeiser loves books – some because of their content, some because of their appearance. His library expands constantly and not only for professional reasons; there are plenty of volumes he loves to have on his shelves simply because he finds them such beautifully designed objects. A "good book" and whatever it is that makes a book beautiful are not easy to define – the details of a design may well suit one book to perfection, but be very much out of place with another publication. A good book never wants to be left on the shelf – it needs to be read, examined, discussed, and it was with all of this in mind that the author launched his Website "A Good Book", where publications of many different genres are presented as if in an intimate diary, and discussed not only in terms of their content, but also in the context of their creative design, or the pleasures to be had from holding and examining them. He was quick to notice how many of these fine books had a simple design combination of black text on a white background. This observation is why 61 books with black type on white cover came into being as an "analog" selection from the website: each book here is presented with the cover, a bibliography and a short text, anecdote, or even a quotation to initiate discussion. Much care, effort and affection was lavished on compiling and designing a reader – this is an anthology which of course also references the black and white thematic focus. 61 books with black type on white cover is available in two sizes: a small reader in paperback format or as a large display volume with the covers in the original dimensions.

_ Bernd Kuchenbeiser, born 1969, is a designer and author. He studied music and communications design in Heidelberg and Stuttgart. He has run his own design studio in Munich since 1996. Bernd Kuchenbeiser’s work supports companies, public authorities and publishers in all areas of cultural and visual communication. He was art director of the architectural journal Baumeister from 1997 to 2011. In 2004 he won Europe’s most prestigious design competition: the Kiel Week Corporate Design prize. His designs have gained national and international acclaim, winning numerous prizes in the Book Design Foundation competition "the most beautiful German books", including first prize for "the most beautiful German book" in 2013. His work has been presented around the world in the travelling exhibition The Dimension of Surface – Communications Design in Germany, which was organized jointly by the Goethe Institute and the German Design Council. _ How does visual creativity arise in the first place and how can visual methods be developed and applied in the production of ideas and variety? Various methods for doing this are presented here under the chapter headings "Basis", "Interpretation", "Variation", "Relation" und "Sequence" with over 3000 illustrations. In the course of this work numerous methodical design approaches are presented and mediated. One of the reasons that the results presented here are so varied and frequently surprising, is the variety of the procedures described. For over two decades Armin Lindauer and Betina Müller have searched out, collected and produced work dealing with their understanding of how experimental design can be created by using methodical design processes. They show numerous parallels from completely different areas of activity including advertising, product design, poster art, the fine arts and the sciences. On the one hand historic work is discussed in the book prologue such as that of Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet, Alexej Jawlensky, Pablo Picasso, Josef Albers, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and on the other the work of wellknown designers – such as Daniele Buetti, Günther Kieser or Stefan Sagmeister – is considered. The book is thus simultaneously both a highly specialized technical work and an extensive and very rich atlas of ideas and inspirations. It is an impulse giver without dictating the way and demonstrates once again that creativity is frequently based firmly on methods which in turn it also promotes.

Die Frage, ob und wie

Die Effektivität

Es gibt einen Unterschied zwischen „die richtigen Dinge tun“ und „die Dinge richtig tun“. Dass Produkte gut funktionieren und einfach zu benutzen sind, ist eine Grundvoraussetzung im Produktdesign. Darüber hinaus sollte ein neues Konzept nicht nur möglichst effektiv sein – sondern auch effizient.

Effektiv ist eine Sache immer dann, wenn man sein Ziel erreicht hat. Findet man zum Beispiel mitten in London einen Parkplatz, ist das effektiv. Hat man dafür zwei Stunden und zig Liter Sprit gebraucht, ist es allerdings wenig effizient. Im Unterschied zur Effizienz zählt bei der Effektivität allerdings nicht der Aufwand, der zur Erreichung eines Ziels nötig ist. Will man aus Designperspektive Effektivität beurteilen, so muss man etwas vorsichtig sein. Denn mangelnde Effektivität ist nicht immer das Resultat schlechter Gestaltung. Wenn zum Beispiel ein Rasierapparat nicht effektiv funktioniert, dann liegt das nicht zwingend an schlechtem Design. Es kann vielmehr technische Ursachen haben oder konstruktionsbedingt sein.

Freundlich zum Benutzer sein Was zeichnet ein Produkt aus, das einen Anwender zufrieden macht? Zunächst einmal, dass es einwandfrei funktioniert. Ist das der Fall, ist es auch nützlich. Was wie selbstverständlich klingt, ist allerdings seltener, als man denkt.

Die Effizienz Effizienz ist ein goldenes Kalb, um das alle tanzen. Aus gutem Grund – bezeichnet sie doch das Verhältnis von Aufwand und Resultat. Sprich: Was ist notwendig, um ein Ziel zu erreichen, wie wirtschaftlich ist etwas, rechnet sich das? Je geringer der Einsatz ausfällt, desto effizienter wird ein Ergebnis erzielt.

Funktionalität Geht ja prima. Dieser Aspekt klärt, ob eine Sache funktioniert. Funktional ist im Produktdesign immer dann etwas, wenn der Gegenstand eine bestimmte Aufgabe erfüllt. Wenn Föne fönen, Fahrräder fahren oder Rasierer rasieren, sind sie funktional. Die Frage, wie und mit welcher Qualität diese Funktion erfüllt wird, beantwortet der Aspekt der Usability. Auf Deutsch: die Gebrauchstauglichkeit.

Aufwand meint dabei verschiedene Dinge. Wichtige Faktoren sind die Zeit, die Energie oder auch die Konzentration, die wir für eine bestimmte Sache investieren müssen, um etwas zu erreichen. Ein besonders übersichtliches Produktdesign zum Beispiel kann den Zeit- und Konzentrationsaufwand bei der Bedienung reduzieren und die Effizienz deutlich steigern.

Die Praktikabilität

Der Grad der nützlichkeit. DIN EN ISO 9241 Teil 11 ist kein wirklich gebrauchstauglicher Name. Dennoch definiert die Norm Gebrauchstauglichkeit. Sie ist demnach immer dann gegeben, wenn folgender Tatbestand erfüllt ist: „... indem ein Produkt oder eine Software bestimmte Ziele effektiv, effizient und zufriedenstellend erfüllt.“ – Da die Zufriedenstellung des Nutzers das Resultat aus Effizienz und Effektivität und einiger weiterer Faktoren ist, können Sie das Wort „zufriedenstellend“ gleich wieder aus Ihrem Gedächtnis streichen. Merken Sie sich stattdessen lieber Praktikabilität. Doch dazu später mehr, vorher wollen wir uns kurz die beiden wichtigen Themen Effektivität und Effizienz ansehen.

Was zeichnet ein gutes Handy aus? Sicher auch die Tatsache, dass es gut in die Tasche passt und nicht zu groß ist. Oder eine mobile Festplatte: Hier ist es nicht unerheblich, ob sie gegen Herunterfallen geschützt ist oder nicht. Solche Dinge lassen sich unter dem Punkt Praktikabilität zusammenfassen. Diese ist allerdings schwerer messbar als Effizienz und Effektivität; was praktisch ist, entscheidet jeder zu einem großen Teil subjektiv.

robo worm Er ist ein Roboter, der die Fortbewegung von Raupen widerspiegelt. Die Bewegungen der ringförmigen Muskeln werden durch gesteuerte Magnetisierung der Metallringe (in einem Silikonschlauch integriert) simuliert. Somit wird eine Fortbewegung auf extrem unebenen Untergründen, in Kanälen und Schächten ermöglicht. Wo Kettenräder und andere Fortbewegungsmechanismen hängen bleiben und nicht weiterkommen, windet sich Robo Worm problemlos durch. Robo Worm besitzt zwei Köpfe, welche sich jeweils an den Enden des Wurms befinden, sodass er zum Rückwärtsbewegen nicht wenden muss. Dieses Prinzip ermöglicht die Rückbewegung bei extrem engen Schächten problemlos. Zusätzlich besitzt er Kameras und weitere Sensoren, z. B. ein Mikrofon, um Aufnahmen in schwerstzugänglichen Bereichen zu realisieren. Diese Aufnahmen können per Funk direkt an eine Empfangsstation gesendet oder zwischengespeichert werden.

_ The architect and designer Klaus Vogt was an influential force in the new design for living pioneered during the buoyant and optimistic years of the late nineteen sixties and early seventies. His furniture is a signpost for a new approach to living that was a far cry from the bourgeois living concepts and the functional aesthetic standards of modernism. Joan Billing and Samuel Eberli of Design+Design also examine the love of experiment that was alive and flourishing during those times in their monograph study of the Swiss designer Klaus Vogt and the evolving environment with its new and changeable forms of living and multifunctional furnishings. The book also unfolds the story of how the way to these new forms in lifestyle were opened up and developed at that time. The young Klaus Vogt made good use of the knowledge he had acquired in his apprenticeship as a boat builder in his early chair construction work. After completing an interior design class at the Zurich School of Design with Willy Guhl and working in an architectural practice in the Netherlands he began to develop furniture designs that dropped the sharp edged pattern of the existing standard of the times. The furniture of Klaus Vogt features forms with the rounded and curved lines familiar to us from boat construction. They break with the standard design conventions of their time. A new design for living emerged from his pleasure in the play of color, materials, new production techniques and forms of use, which was characterized by the democratic, social and economic approach in the buoyant mood of the times. The book includes essays and contributions from Claude Lichtenstein, Susanna Koeberle, Arthur Rüegg, Verena Huber, Joan Billig and Samuel Eberli among others.

Istanbul is the only metropolis in the world that unites two continents. It is a trans-cultural mosaic, modern and contemporary in the way it links its rich past with our common future. The way Asia and Europe come together or fight it out in the streets against a setting somewhere between Ottoman magnificence and modernism is all part of the vibrant daily life in this city. The signage system project developed for Berlin Brandenburg Airport by the communications design firm Moniteurs is presented in this e-book. The four chapters explain how the signage system shapes the structural identity of the airport: The "Identity" chapter deals with the architecture, the colors, the development of the fonts and the pictograms used; "Function" explains how typography is employed, what labelling types and dimensions are used, and how guidance and orientation works for visitors to the airport. The "Development" chapter explains how the notices and labelling are tested to ensure they are legible, e.g. at various testing points, and are then produced in line with the findings. "Beyond the Terminal" deals with how the signage system applies not only in the terminals, but extends outward to other buildings, building sections and adjacent sites, for the motorway accesses and exits and also for links to Internet and information monitors. In addition there is a brief review examining the art-in-the-building projects. The digital form of the book has opened up the possibility for presenting extensive material, interactive graphics and films explaining everything in detail.
