WELCOME BFFs! We are so honored and blessed to be able to launch the Bentonville Film Festival initiative this year in the quintessential American town of Bentonville, Arkansas. Just over a year ago the wildly ambitious idea of launching a film festival championing women and diversity was brought to us by our BFF, Walmart, and, with the support of our other BFF, Coca-Cola, the idea quickly blossomed.
Geena Davis Co-Founder
Trevor Drinkwater Co-Founder
Soon our BFF family began to grow and thanks to all of them we have made that ambition a reality. As we thought through how to make this a powerful, positive and proactive influence in filmmaking we realized it needed to be more than just a one-week event, which lead us to create a national calendar of events to champion women and minority filmmakers, talent and financiers. We have now positioned the platform to provide ongoing turnkey mass distribution opportunities for women and minority owned production companies, independent filmmakers and distributors. We believe our philosophy of inclusion and positive proactivity, coupled with a commercial focus, will enable us to have a significant impact on our mission to amplify the voices of women and diversity, both in front of and behind the camera. This inaugural event has come together quickly, thanks to the support of an amazing group of sponsors, industry leaders and local volunteers. It truly took a village — actually a great American town — to pull this off and we hope you all enjoy as many of the great events as you can. Go see a film or two, take a walk to the Crystal Bridges Museum, experience the community and hospitality at Sponsor Village, join us for some fun special events and we hope to enlighten and inspire you along the way with impactful panel discussions and dialogue. BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, BENTONVILLE FILM FESTIVAL CO-FOUNDERS, GEENA DAVIS & TREVOR DRINKWATER

GEENA DAVIS
FESTIVAL CHAIR Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actor Geena Davis is one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, and is well known for her seminal roles in several feature films that became cultural landmarks. A long-time advocate for women and girls’ empowerment, Davis is now recognized for her pioneering work to change the media landscape nearly as much as for her acting accomplishments. She is the visionary and founder of the non-profit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which uniquely combines groundbreaking research and behind-the-scenes advocacy. The Institute is successfully influencing film and television creators to dramatically increase the percentages of female characters — and reduce gender stereotyping — in entertainment made for children 11 and under. While watching children’s entertainment with her young daughter, Geena was astounded by the dearth of female characters. She felt that surely — in the 21st century — kids should be seeing boys and girls sharing the sandbox equally. It turned out that virtually no research had been done on gender representations in children’s media. Fueled to take action, her Institute has now commissioned the largest body of research on gender representations in film and television ever undertaken, spanning over 20 years. The results confirmed the disparity she observed: in family films and kids’ TV shows, there is only one female character for every three male characters. In group and crowd scenes, only 17% of the characters are female. The few female characters depicted are often hyper-sexualized, even in G-rated films. Geena’s thoughtful leadership is recognized globally. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has quoted Geena for her motto: “If they can see it, they can be it.” She was appointed Special Envoy for Women and Girls in ICT for the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Geena is also an official partner of UN Women, working toward their goal of promoting gender equality and empowering women worldwide. To learn more about Geena’s research, go to www.seejane.org

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS ART OF THE DEAL 1:00 PM | WED 6 Moderator: Jason Kelly Panelists: Geralyn Dreyfous, Jon Patricof, Darrell Miller, Elizabeth Frank, Peter Trinh, Emily Best Although conditions have improved in the last 40 years, women and minority filmmakers still struggle to secure funding to get their films made. This panel will discuss how filmmakers can leverage emerging technology and business models to get their stories told and in front of an audience. BEHIND THE LENS: A DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE 3:00 PM | FRI 8 Moderator: Josh Welsh Panelists: Nisha Ganatra, Perri Pelz, Catherine Hardwicke, Anna Martemucci, George Tillman Jr An insightful behind-the-scenes look into the working styles of popular Hollywood directors and their movies. DECODING STEREOTYPES IN THE MEDIA 5:00 PM | WED 6 Moderator: Susan Cartsonis Panelists: Julie Ann Cromett, Sowmya Subramanian, Crystal Dilworth, Diane Ikemiyashiro Despite the growing number of STEM jobs and the rising influence of technology on society, the number of ethnically diverse girls and boys studying STEM is low. For children to be inspired to study STEM, they need to see role models they can relate to in movies, on TV, and in the tech industry. DIGITAL STORYTELLING 9:30 AM | FRI 8 Moderator: Dyllan McGee Panelists: Melanie Capacia Johnson, Julian Franco, Jonathan Shank, Tom Hoehn, Kelly Edwards, Meg & Liz, Amirose Eisenbach The panelists in this session will present examples of how they are creating strong and diverse characters and great storytelling through video across multiple digital platforms in addition to, or instead of, traditional TV and Film media. CHAMPIONING WOMEN & DIVERSITY IN FILM
GENDER EQUALITY: WHY MEN MATTER 9:30 AM | WED 6 Moderator: Wanda Young Panelists: Fernando Szew, Dean General, JS Kang, Jason Kelly, Judge Reinhold, Jim K. Benton In order to achieve equality for women, men need to be a part of the solution. Equality is only achievable if we work together. Campaigns like UN Women’s #HeForShe is one such initiative; challenging men and boys to take responsibility for gender equality and to confront gender stereotypes in order to create positive norms of gender equality, non-violence and respect. This panel will bring together business leaders and content creators who are advocating for the empowerment of women and diversity. It will also explore how men can become allies and missionaries in support of women and diversity. IN CONTROL OF HER OWN DESTINY 11:00 AM | FRI 8 Moderator: Malina Saval Panelists: Melissa Joan Hart, Kristin Hahn, Rosie O’Donnell, Courtney Kemp Agboh, Sarah Morgan Thomas, Alysia Reiner According to the Geena Davis Institute’s latest global research, there is a direct association with having a female director or a female writer and seeing more girls and women on screen. When you have a female writer attached, the percentage of girls and women on screen jumps 7.5 percent. When you have a female director attached, the number of girls and women on screen jumps 6.8 percent. Although the movie industry has evolved since Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland refused to accept the absolute power of the studios over their destiny, there has never been another time when women have been as underrepresented on screen as they are now. For an industry that offers so few opportunities for women and minorities, increasing numbers of talented women are pushing back by taking control of their own interests rather than depending on the powerful commercial studios. This panel will feature celebrities who have taken control of their destiny by starting their own production companies.

POWER OF THE PEN 11:00 AM | TUES 5 Moderator: Susan Cartsonis Panelists: Effie Brown, Darla Anderson, Ami Canaan Mann, Jim K. Benton The easiest way to improve the representation of women and diversity is to create great characters from the start. Before a film/show ever hits the screen, it starts as a script. This panel will focus on the development of great roles for women and diversity in any scenario. FILMS: NARRATIVES BFF WOMEN AND DIVERSITY METRIC AND METHODOLOGY As BFF is research and analytics based, we have developed two metrics which work in conjunction with one another to indicate how and to what extent a film scores against our mission - Represented by BFF Hearts and an intensity level of 1 to 10.
A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND
indicates that both women AND minorities were involved in lead roles or primary film functions (director, writer, producer etc.) indicates that either women OR minorities were involved in lead roles or primary film functions (director, writer, producer etc.) indicates that there was at least a 50% combined representation of women AND minorities in supporting cast, below the line crew or extras.
1–10
Intensity levels reflect the degree to which women and minorities were involved across the entire film project.
Recommended Attendance Age: As is standard with all film festivals, many of BFF’s selections have not yet been rated by the MPAA. For this reason, BFF has recommended an attendance age to assist families with making an informed decision with regards to the film choices at festival screenings. As an example, a 17+ recommendation indicates that there may be language use, themes or topics that some families may find uncomfortable for those under the age of 17.
