Hello, My Name is Benyamin Kevin Hariono. I am an architect living in Surabaya, Indonesia. My interest move between wide range of design and art. I recently graduated from bachelor degree of architecture and my interest lies in the ambiquity of this framed world. I am seek for the contingency and peri feri area of things. Either it from architecture that interfere to other subject, or other subject that try to interfere architecture itself. For me myself, i am more interested with the people behind the design beyond the design itself. Because i believe language, expression and feels in design itself matter. I am also love to wander around the world to see various things in the range of small to big scale of architecture and design. At the end, i play a lot with the language and vocabulary in design itself and try to perseve, provoke, and tell a story within architecture itself. And the most important thing of it all is the joy of making things, so the design itself should be fun!

History is always been part of cronological events that not defined. As the design itself seem not defined by it space or time but usually defined by the creator. Contingency within design and history have become a potential collaboration to tell the history of design yet by cronological view but also seem try to elaborate the definition of the design and designer itself. We propose and idea that try to become a catalyst of the control of the time and yet still control the space. So we provide to axis that conclude our definition of control. The first one is the Verticality axis that control chronos or time itself as the subject that try to interfere with the embodied object itself. So represent the verticality it become the place where the history of design is narrated within the cronological time of well being. Upward, it tell how new is the design made, and downward, tell how old have the design is create. And use the contingency of the gap within the sky and underground, it become infinite boundary to create the cronological story within design. Opposite of the verticality, come the horizontality that subdivided into two parts, the public space and secondary purpose area. The horizontal subject of the design become the creator of the space and try to blend and not seperate the verticality with the nature itself. So with the supportive function, the horizontal area become the balancer within the relation within the verticality with the nature itself. After we try to summarize the corelation within the history and the design with the control of time and space. Now we try to ‘decomposing’ what design really are. As the history, design have become a transedental value that always connect the people within certain era and flourish their own language. Then we think and hipotizing that if a design have to put in the museum, then the design itself is died. And we try to propose that the design that curated within these museum is decomposed into new elements become parts of the whole story of the museum itself as the compilation history of design without interfere one and each other. So it become a cemetery to a design to become rest in peace and becomin part of the story that we try to lift that the architecture itself is an iconic things that try to become somehow like a sculpture that try to tell and represent history of design at Oslo itself.

DESIGN*TUARY Museum Of Design Oslo International Competition Group(2)- Lead designer

This project strives the imaginative possibility of the relation within contingency of time and space with the design itself to become a compilation of history. The idea behind is to compose design without the boundary of time and space, a new design and the old ones. To achieve the chronological story of design we made the vertical axis and the horizontal axis. And to connect people and local artists to join the community within. Keyword : History, Design, Vertical, Horizontal, Decomposing.

Non Architecture Competition 2020:Reviving Mines Group(2)- Lead designer

We connect with our ancestor through prayers dan ceremony. How to increase bon between human and ancestor, using nature. Nature as representation of ancestor soul by planting graves with tree, and bonding human with nature. Reusing mines site as memorial with sustainable approach. Graves area are designed as landscaping, with the tree planted as a headstone. The body will be wrapped using biodegradable material, so that the dead body becomes the initial nutrition for plants to grow. Thus, becoming “the tree”. Keyword : Mines, Death, Investment, Tourism, Memorial

The whole area is divided into 3 main areas, based on land and tree size and price: 1. Common person, Not identified: small tree (Wheat, Pears, Bamboo, etc) 2. Moderate person: Major tree (Cherry, Sour gum, Apple, etc) 3. Rich, High ranking person: High value tree (Ginkgo, Peony, Bonsai, etc) Landscaping arrange the layer beautifully, so the landscape can be “branded” as tourism sites. Generating income for landscape operator to maintain and cultivate/harvest the landscape and generate micro/small commercial. Tree owner (family) also able to cultivate/harvest they tree.

The Intention of the design for the parent-child restaurant i design is as one form of catalyst within playful space imposed with glimpse of elegancy of the space to create elaborated new spatial performance of a place. Then as a designer i try to implemented it from, highlight ing curvature as the essential and main substance of the design parameter in the spaceitself and let it become more rhytmic and repetitive to give sensation and memory to the user of the spaceitself. The arch-shape create yet majestic feel to the kids due the proportion but also give dreamy feel by the pattern i try to create with the fairy-like and pastel color palette that become symbolization of the playful side of the space and imposed with some more sharp and elegant color like gold, yelow stripes and black matter color give the impression of the how masjetic the quality of the space is for both users. After that i try to tweak the space with juxtapoxing the object, with some more thematic things like the statue and some more abstracts-shape object that intended to create more stimulation of imagination within the space itself. Take some pattern like fireworks and layered pattern also give and unique yet satisfiying visually. The radial programming that create the children space surrounded by the eating space create borderless security within the children space. Also create the flexibility of surveillance distance because the space merged into one subtation of space. Overall, the space i try to create is again to preserve the need of the playfulness of the child but also please the parents as the child collaborator so the activities there can integrated well functionally and the most important thing intergrated well visually as a whole place of parent-child restaurant itself.

Personal design project Individual - Lead designer

The proposal for parent-child restaurant based on the fairy-like and imaginative space, imposed and combined well with the elegancy of the high-end restaurant create higher value into the design itself. Playful space within the place to eat and place to play mixed and reconfigurate within design parameter and more careful decision to reconciliate. TROPICAL SATURATED LANDSCAPE nonschool international workshop 2020

Group(4)- Mentor: Animali Domestici - researcher,designer

Tropical Saturated Landscapes is a workshop aimed to collectively reflect about new forms of multi-species coexistence, engaging with urban natural/artificial spaces, through fiction and storytelling techniques. Participants will work together with the leader to transform a series of selected urban environments, augmenting the possibilities of coexistence within them, by densifying and & saturating; relevant conditions and (architectural) elements. Animali Domestici, is a design practice based in Bangkok, co-founded by Antonio Bernacchi and Alicia Lazzaroni, with an active interest in ecology in its wider sense, that has been investigating alternative inclusive assemblages of users and materialities, proposing multi-species explorations with an empirical and hands-on approach.

acculturation between religious belief

AKSARA AKSARA AKSARA AKSARA AKSARA

buddhism is a religion that come from needs from the seekers that seek for englightment in life. Buddism come to Indonesia brought by a chinese nomads in Syailendra era. That cause, aculturation between indonesian culture with the buddism itself. But from the process itself, buddism architecture is resonansed to much that sometimes try to colonialize javanese architecture. My project is proposed to question and redefine the definition of acculturation within buddhism architecture that mostly shaped like a chinese architecture and javanese architecture as the root of the culture itself.

Juxtaposing history through materiality the design itself designed to try recreate spatial experience of the Javanese architecture ambience that converted into contemporary state juxtaposing with the symbolizing buddhist culture that create an asimilation between both culture. The materiality also being juxtaposed as the older material use mansory and the new material using steel. The tendency between this material create a complex value between history and the future of the buddhist and javanese architecture and become blend within the pancer(sunyata) or the void in the centre that become the ambigous space that connect the architecture, peoples and the nature itself with the contingency range.

2019 Main Perspective of AKSARA Benyamin Kevin Digital Rendering 420mm x 297mm

4 core-pole The 4 pillars in the main mass function as structural elements of the column that support the main mass to be able to stand firmly and are a symbol of the four paths of truth in Buddhist teachings and by providing a stupa-shaped guide, they provide a vertical relationship with the One.

main mass vista The monumental impression of the monastery is obtained from the vista which is formed from the landscape which is designed into a linear line which directly leads to the main mass of the monastery so that it is hoped that this landscape design will give that monumental impression.

Imposition of pancer and sunyata Javanese culture that carries the Pancer as the center turns out to have coherence with Buddhism regarding emptiness, or often called absence. Namely, a center for attaining enlightenment, so that an open area that becomes an ambiguous space also becomes a symbol of solitude.

waisak expansion space The waisak event requires much more space for a place of worship for Buddhists so that the open area of the pancer can be an additional space that is directed towards the statue along with the main place of worship which is already on the second floor.

meditation-circulation crossprogramming The meditation room, which is usually a quiet place, is questionable because at first the meditation was held in an insulting place, so the idea emerged that it was combining the meditation venue program with pedestrian circulation.

statue and dhammasala relation From the design idea, it is hoped that people who worship in the main place of worship feel that the Buddha statue has the same body size as them, this is obtained by providing a visibility between the statue and the worshipers.

cardinal orientation The division of north, west, east and south orientations is the main benchmark in Javanese architectural culture. In the middle there is a pancer which is the center of the four cardinal orientations. The mass division design is divided into four masses in each cardinal direction and the open area in the pancer area.

giving the essence of distance

in Javanese custom, distance is the main essence in spatial planning design, because distance forms space, so that the mass design strategy is made without sticking it but only connected by the hallway.

horizontal relation

the front to the back is a relationship that is more private or solitary, while the right to left relationship is more in the public sphere or objection, so that the zoning of private space is directed front to back while right to left is made a more public area.

The object that our team observe is wood and clay. it based on the most banal and atributed objects that we can found in our observation perimeter. Firstly we try to scrap all the atribute and define the true meaning of both material through it shape, verb also real value of the material itself. After that we trying to tweaking the object to put in the context on the observation perimeter with playing with tectonic and crafting style, that we found what become advatage character in clay can improve what lack on the wood and also both side, the wood advantage can support the clay disadvantage.Thats why in the end, we try to use crafting and tectonic to put this material to become and new elements that can connect and create some spatial experience posibility.

The workshop investigate the ambiguity of the attribute that given into parts, elements, and material. Stereotype that come from the culture that stick with the material usually become and temporary identification of an object, rather it become an cheap-like, or old-like also expensive object. In this course, our team try to seperated the atribute into the most banal meaning of the object itself.

PAAU International Workshop group(3) - Researcher-Lead designer we down to the community to do some analysis about the Georgetown itself. How Georgetown is define, even it by local, tourisr, old people, young peiple, the building and the structure and also the culture itself. And afterthat we discuss and points out some critical points about georgetown that we found interesting, there are young generatiion, architecture and the local it self. The tendency between the inclusivity and the esclusivity between them make problems in Georgetown itself. \We also track that unesco itself cause the main problems because UNESCO try to stop the rotation and the flluctuation of the culture in Georgetown by label the city by world heritagae site. The city rather become static and boring because there are no something fresh and can become dead city Georgetown, Penang is known for its largest collections of well preserved pre-war buildings in the Southeast Asia region, dating as early as the late 1700s’. In 2008, Georgetown has earned itself the recognition as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The aging structures stood over 300 years passing down from generation to generation. Today, the heritage buildings in Georgetown became the iconic architectural identity for the locals with its majority the heritage buildings being the Chinese Shophouse typology. The presence of its significant architectural features gradually became part of the Penangites’ pride and the represented image of Georgetown. Eventually, changes of any sort in Georgetown might seem like a threat degrading the authenticity of its heritage.

the diagram tell us how complicated the problems from the aspect A, B, and C and it more and more complicated because the value of the variable keep growing, either it from the tourist, local, disable, youngster, seller, businessman, politicans and etc. If we try to solve one aspect, the other aspect problem gonna pops up. We try to search what is the core that cause its all chaotic problems and it down to one reason. Because we always thinks that everyoone and everything must be inclusive, but it not supposed to be like that. Inclusive and esclusive is must be balanced. There is no such things at too inclusive or too exclusive itself.

And after we critize the problem is about the rule itself so actually as architecture student, our role just not about design a solution by architectural design but also from how can we advocate and have critical thinking about what make the problems itself before jump into the conclusion itself. The drawing in the right side is actually the act that how we actually try to diss other group that try to create solutions so fastly within 3 day of observation, that everyone can think of that and nothing wrong with it but, eventually that not the solution and not very fundamental itself because it just the problem of choice.

So our lays proposal just about how we speculate and predict the timeline if we can intergue with the rule of UNESCO itself and try to make movement to the city itself. We also predict if the label is gone of course it gonna be the downfall of the heritage city but also the born of the adaptive and livable city and of course it gonna be fluctuacted because there are will always tendency between the person who agree and disagree with it. We conclude with that we discuss and ciritique the Georgetown that have thel label of world heritage itself make us one step further to an adaptive Georgetown we believe

what can we do just say
