Jesus

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE:

Isaiah 14:12-14; Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-13 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: God allowed Jesus to be tempted to sin. Jesus used God’s word each time He resisted Satan. Jesus said, “No,” to temptation, and He did not sin. LESSON FOCUS: To understand that God allows me to be tempted. To understand that God has given me His Word to keep me from sin. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: God gives me His Word to keep me from sin. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED: 1. Where was Jesus when He was tempted? (He was led by God’s Spirit into the desert, where He fasted for 40 days and nights.) 2. How did Jesus resist the temptations? (He used God’s Word, which was hidden away in His heart and mind, to tell Satan, “No, I will obey God.”

the One I Must Follow

God Gives Me His Word to Keep Me from Sin

3. How can we know the difference between right and wrong? (We can know the difference through our knowledge of Scripture. When we know the Word of God, He helps us to understand what is right and wrong.)

Will you begin to work at remembering God’s Word so you can stand strong against temptation? Will you ask God each day to help you say, "No,” when you are tempted to do wrong?

Saturday—This Week’s Puzzle

Monday—Jesus Is Tempted This week, we’ll look at when Jesus was tempted. Who lead Jesus into the desert? God’s Holy S ___ ___ ___ ___

Memorize this week’s memory verse: Psalm 119:11. Use the numbers under the letters below to decode the message. Then, tell the verse to someone you know.

___

Jesus took this special time out in the desert to pray and really think about what God had sent Him to do. Why would the desert be a good place to do this? (Mark any you think are true.)

 It was away from the noise of the city.  Jesus could be alone to talk with God, His Father.  Can you think of any other reason? ________________________ Did God know ahead of time what would happen to Jesus?

 Yes  No Why did God allow Jesus to be tempted? (Mark any that you think are true.)

 So we could see that Jesus never sinned.  God wasn’t powerful enough to stop Satan from tempting Jesus.  We would see how Jesus said, “No!” to sin.  We would know what we should do when Satan tempts us. Satan is God’s enemy and wants to stop people from obeying God. Satan wanted Jesus to forget about God’s plan. That would be sin, and it would spoil God’s plan to send Jesus to be our Savior from sin. Can you tell about a time that Satan tempted you to sin?

_______________________________________________ Tell God, “Thanks,” that He is stronger than Satan and He will help you stand strong against sin.

Friday—Ready For Battle

Read Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:12

Jesus always began His answer to Satan with the words, “IT IS WRITTEN.” Jesus knew God’s Word by heart!

Tuesday—Man Does Not Live On Bread Alone

 He ran around really fast.

________________________________________________

 He went without eating anything for all that time.

What are some things you should do to make sure your “sword” is ready to fight Satan?

 Leave it in a place in my bedroom so it will never get used or torn.  Pretend to learn verses so my Sunday School teacher will be happy.

Matthew 4:2-4

While He was in the desert, Jesus was fasting for 40 days and nights. What does that mean?

Read Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:12. What do these verses compare the Bible to?

If you were going to use your sword in a real war, you’d want to make sure it was ready. You would probably sharpen it every day and make sure it was free from rust and ready to use. Our weapon against Satan’s temptations is the Bible.

Read

 He spent time putting things together (fastening them).

How hungry do you think Jesus was after His 40 days of fasting? No Hunger at ALL

SUPER Hungry

to become

 Read it so I know what is right and what is wrong.

When Jesus was hungry, Satan told Him a new plan to make Him feel good. Satan wants you to think that you would be happier if you had everything that you wanted, too.

 Memorize verses so I am ready to say to Satan, “It is written!”

What did Jesus say to Satan? (Verse 4) “Man does not live on

How sharp is your sword?

____________ that comes from the mouth of God.”

 It’s really dull.  It needs sharpening.

What do you think will bring you the most true happiness?

 I work at sharpening every day!

 Owning lots of toys

Will you ask God to help you keep you sword sharp to fight against sin?

 Having really nice clothes  Knowing Jesus Read our memory verse out loud at least two times.

Wednesday—Do Not Put God To The Test

Read Matthew 4:5-7

What did Satan say would happen if Jesus jumped off of the high place at the temple?

Thursday—Go Away! What did Satan tell Jesus He would have to do to have all the power in the world?

Read Matthew 4:8-11

 Bow down to him, disobeying God.

________________________________________________ ________________________________________________

 Get a big army.  Wear a fancy crown. Did Satan’s idea go along with God’s plan?

Satan tempted Jesus to impress the people by jumping off the temple. If He jumped off this very high place and didn’t get hurt, all the people would know that Jesus was special and they would worship Him right away.

Read Philippians 2:10-11 Will all people and kingdoms of the world bow before Jesus someday?

What would be wrong with this?

 Yes

 It would be only to impress people.

 No

 It would be putting God to the test.

Was it God’s plan to give Jesus this power when He was in the desert?

 Jesus would be trying to get around God’s plan.

 Yes

 Jesus would not be the Savior if He sinned.

 No

 All of the above.

If Jesus obeyed Satan, He would no longer be the sinless Lamb of God. He couldn’t have paid the sin penalty so people could be forgiven and have eternal life.

How did Jesus answer this time? (Verse 7)

“I___ i___ also w___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___

: Do not put the Lord

your God to the test.”

Jesus was saying that He could not turn away from God’s plan and then expect God to protect Him as He did a foolish thing. Jesus knew that following God’s plan was the most important thing, even though it would be very hard. Will you tell God, “Thanks,” for His Word, which tells us how to follow Him?

How many lines of our memory verse can you say without peeking?

Does Satan every tempt you to think or do things that do not honor God?

 Yes  Maybe  No What did Jesus tell Satan? “A

___ ___ ___ from Me, Satan!.“

Will you ask God to help you tell Satan, “Go away!” when you are tempted to sin?

Will you say the same thing to Satan when you are tempted to sin?

 Yes  Maybe  No
