SCRIPTURE PASSAGE:
Matthew 4:17—22; Mark 1:14—20, 2:13—17; Luke 5:1-11, 6:12-16 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: Jesus called the fishermen, saying, “Come , follow Me.” He promised that He would make them fishers of men. Jesus also called, “Come, follow Me,” to Matthew (Levi), the tax collector. Peter, Andrew, James, John and Matthew left everything to follow Jesus, who came to save sinners. LESSON FOCUS: To understand that Jesus calls to me, “Come, follow Me.” To understand that following Jesus means that I will choose each day to do the things that Jesus does. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: God asks me to become a follower of Jesus. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED: 1. When Jesus said, “Come, follow Me,” what did He mean? (Come with Me and do the things you see Me doing.)
the One I Must Follow
2. What are some of these things? (Tell about Jesus, pray, have compassion for others, do God’s work, be humble, etc.)
God Asks Me to Become A Follower of Jesus
3. One day when Jesus was teaching people from a boat near the shore, He asked Peter to put the boat into deeper water and then to let down the fishing nets. What was Peter’s response? (Peter was just cleaning up form an unsuccessful night of fishing. Though Jesus’ request may not have made sense to him, Peter obeyed and did what Jesus asked of him. 4. What was the result? (They caught so many fish that their nets were breaking. Peter needed help from his partners. Will you choose to turn from sin and toward Jesus, doing the things He does? Will you begin today asking God to help you be an obedient follower of Jesus each day?

T_________ C _______________________ (Levi’s other name was Matthew.) People do not like tax collectors. Every time someone walked past Levi’s booth, they had to pay some money that went to the Roman government. People hated to pay that money, and tax collectors many times took extra money, too. Everywhere Jesus went, He told the people they must leave sin behind (repent) an obey God instead. What did Levi have to leave behind to follow Jesus?
