Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together.

The Holy Spirit God’s Power in My Life

SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: Mark 16:12-14, Luke 24:13-45, John 20:19-31 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: On the day He was resurrected, Jesus came to two of His followers walking on the road to Emmaus, and He explained the Scriptures concerning Himself. Their hearts burned within them as they walked – they wanted to know more! When they were at the table together that evening, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus when He broke the bread and began to give it to them. Then Jesus disappeared from their sight. The two ran to tell others the things they had learned. Jesus came again to the others that evening and opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. LESSON FOCUS: To understand that the whole Bible is about Jesus and to kindle a desire to understand what the Bible says about Him. To understand that it is Jesus who opens my mind to understand the things written about Him. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT JESUS: Jesus delights to open my mind so that I can understand Scripture. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED: What happened on the road to Emmaus on the day of Jesus’ resurrection? Two of Jesus’ followers were walking home to Emmaus, discussing the events of Jesus’ crucifixion when Jesus Himself came to them. They did not recognize Him, but they were glad of His company as He explained the Scriptures to them. When did they know that the person who taught them was Jesus? What happened next? When He broke bread for them at dinner, they realized who He was. Then Jesus disappeared. What did the two followers of Jesus do when they realized they had seen Jesus alive again? They immediately got up from the dinner table and ran the seven miles back to Jerusalem so they could tell their friends about Jesus. What did Jesus do for the two on the road to Emmaus and for His other followers? He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Will you begin to read God’s Word each day? Before you read, will you ask Jesus to open your mind and give you understanding of what you read? Will you tell your friends the things you learn about Jesus from God’s Word?

See you on Sunday!

Jesus Gives Me Understanding of His Word

On the Road to Emmaus This Week’s Memory Verse “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me.

In My Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me, that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:1-6

WEDNESDAY – THE BIBLE TELLS ABOUT JESUS Before you read or listen to your Bible, remember to ask God to help you understand it! As Cleopas, his friend, and Jesus walked down the road, Jesus explained to them the things written about Himself in the Old Testament. He might have used Isaiah 53 to explain that He was the One about whom Isaiah talked hundreds of years earlier. Can you draw a line from the words from Isaiah to connect them with the sentence that tells how it happened to Jesus? One is already done to show you how. ISAIAH 53 . HE WAS DESPISED AND REJECTED BY MEN  . . . FAMILIAR WITH SUFFERING HE WAS PIERCED FOR OUR  TRANSGRESSIONS

THE LORD HAS LAID ON HIM  THE INIQUITY OF US ALL

HE WAS OPPRESSED AND AFFLICTED,  YET HE DID NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH

JESUS .  The nails pierced His hands and feet. Jesus was nailed to the cross for our sins.  Jesus was covered with our sins on the cross.  Jesus rose again! He saw the light of day!  Jesus was hated. He suffered very much.

 When they accused Jesus of wrong things, He was silent.

AFTER THE SUFFERING OF HIS SOUL, 

 Jesus hung on the cross between two robbers. He was buried in a rich man’s tomb.

HE WAS ASSIGNED A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED, AND WITH THE RICH IN HIS DEATH

HE WILL SEE THE LIGHT OF LIFE

Will you thank God for His Word that tells us about Jesus?

THURSDAY – JESUS OPENS THEIR EYES Before you read or listen to your Bible, remember to ask God to help you understand it! Read Luke 24:28 to 32. When Cleopas and his friend were almost home, did they know they were talking to Jesus?   Yes  Not yet  No What kind of things did they say to Him?  Nice talking to you – Good bye!  Have a good day.  It’s almost dark out – come and stay with us! Why do you think they said that? _______________________________________ They had learned so much from this man, and they wanted Him to help them understand even more! Jesus stayed for dinner with them. What happened to Cleopas and his friend when Jesus took the loaf of bread and gave some to them? (Verse 31) “Then their ________________ were ________________________ and they ____________________________ Him!” The Bible says that while they were listening to Jesus, their hearts “burned within them.” That means listening to Jesus was like “lighting a fire” that wanted to get bigger—they wanted to know more and more. Will you pray that God will help you want to know more and more about Jesus? How are you coming with learning this week’s memory lines? Can you say them with your eyes closed?
