Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and working through this booklet together. SCRIPTURE PASSAGE:

Jesus

Isaiah 14:12-14; Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-13 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY:

God allowed Jesus to be tempted to sin. Jesus used God’s Word each time He resisted Satan. Jesus said, “No,” to temptation, and He did not sin. LESSON FOCUS:

To understand that God allows me to be tempted. To understand that God has given me His Word to keep me from sin. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD:

God gives me His Word to keep me from sin. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

6. 7.

Why was John baptizing people? (They wanted to show that they were sorry for their sins.) Why did Jesus want John to baptize Him? (Jesus was without sin but he knew that being baptized was part of God’s plan.) Where did Jesus go after His baptism? (he was led into the desert by the Holy Spirit.) How long was He in the desert? (He was there for 40 days and nights.) With what kinds of things did Satan try to tempt Jesus? (First, with food to satisfy His physical hunger in a way that went against God’s plan for Him. Second, with immediate acclaim and worship if Jesus would only try the daring feat of jumping off the temple and being rescued by angels. Third, with worldly power if Jesus would only bow down to him..) How did Jesus resist Satan’s temptations? (he used God’s Word, which He had hidden in His heart, as His sword.) How can we know the difference between right and wrong? (When we know the Word of God, He helps us to understand what is right and wrong.)

Will you begin to work at remembering God’s Word so you can stand strong against temptation? Will you ask God each day to help you say, “No,” when you are tempted to do wrong? Copyright 2008 Berean Baptist Church 309 E County Road 42 Burnsville, Minnesota 55306 952.432.7168

God Gives Me His Word To Keep Me From Sin

The Temptation of Jesus This Week’s Memory Verse: I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11

January 19, 2014

John was baptizing people who wanted to show they were sorry for their sins. Jesus told John that He would like to be baptized. Jesus didn’t need to be baptized because He had never sinned. John wanted Jesus to baptize him, but, Jesus said that He needed to be baptized in order to complete God’s plan. As Jesus was baptized, can you check the things people saw and heard.

Friday—Our Response To Temptation

Read Matt 4:10 & James 4:1-2, 7-8

Matthew 13:55 tells us that one of Jesus’ younger brothers was called James. This James is probably the man who wrote the book of James. Look at the verses in chapter 4 of James. What does James mention that happens among people, even in our families?  Quarrels  Anger

Jesus had memorized parts of the Old Testament. Which verse did He use to hold Satan back?

Wednesday—Satan’s Second Trick Even though Satan’s first deceit failed to trick Jesus, he tried another one. This time Satan tried to twist the truth. Look at verse 6 in Matthew 4. Do you think Satan wondered if Jesus was God?
