Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and working through this booklet together.
Elijah
SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: 1 Kings 18:1-39, 41-45; 2 Kings 1:8; Luke 4:25-26 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: Elijah had faith in the Lord prior to seeing evidence of God’s hand and then was shown the evidence. In today’s lesson he confronts the people of Israel with a challenge to do the same; God allows them a vivid glimpse of His might as they make their decision. After about three years of hiding, Elijah, through Obadiah, tells Ahab that it is time for a “showdown”. Mount Carmel is selected as the location, and Elijah challenges the people: “How long will you waver between two opinions?” The people are silent, so a contest begins to determine which god was (is) real. 450 prophets of Baal dance around their altar from morning until noon. Elijah even taunts them about a god who seems to be unavailable or uncaring. Elijah prepares his altar in a way that assures that there is no trickery and after a simple but direct prayer, the Lord comes with mighty fire to prove that He is the true and living God. The people of Israel quit their wavering and commit their lives to the Lord – “He is God”. That phrase is Elijah’s name. After the myth of Baal is defeated, Elijah presented himself before the Lord with his face in his knees asking for the rain that is so much needed in the land. After seven looks, Obadiah saw the coming rain begin over the Mediterranean Sea.
Hears God’s Still Small Voice
LESSON FOCUS: While it may be a tendency of mankind, we are not to sit on the fence with respect to our faith. Trying to “dance in both worlds” is actually a form of denying the supremacy of our Savior.
If we require evidence before belief, it is a faithless conviction.
God Restores Elijah’s hope
This Week’s Memory Verse:
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD:
God is powerful and mighty, displaying His hand in spectacular ways.
God is a forgiving God, giving everyone the opportunity to follow Him.
RESPONSE:
We should be fully committing our lives to living for our Savior, watching out for times when we avoid taking a stand.
We should always be ready to show our faith in the Lord even before seeing evidence of His presence or power.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
