John 5:1-15 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY:

Jesus found the lame man beside the pool and asked him, “ Do you want to get well?” Jesus healed the man’s legs, and he could walk again. Jesus wanted the man to have eternal life and told him to turn away from sin. LESSON FOCUS:

To understand that I am sick with sin and only Jesus can make me well. To understand that Jesus tells me, “Stop sinning. Come, follow Me.” WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD:

God sent Jesus to take my sin away so that I can walk with Him. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED:

Jesus went to the pool of Bethesda. What was this place like? (There were sick people lying on mats hoping to be healed by the water..) Did the water in this pool have the power to heal a sick person? (No, it was just a superstition. Only God can do a miracle.) Who did Jesus stop and talk to? (A lame man who had been sick for 38 years.) What did Jesus ask the man? (“Do you want to be well?) What was the man’s answer? (“I don’t have anyone to help me”.) What did Jesus tell the man to do? (He told him to get up. He told him to pick up his mat and walk.) What happened to the man? (He was cured at once.) Where did Jesus find the man later that day? (At the temple.) What did Jesus say to the man? (“Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” What could be worse than not walking for 38 years? (Not having eternal life, being separated from God forever.) Jesus healed the man’s body. What else did Jesus want to heal? (The man’s soul.) What made the man’s soul sick? (Sin.) What did Jesus mean when He said to stop sinning? (He wanted the man to repent. He wanted him to turn away from sin and turn to obedience.)

Because the writers of the New International Version were not sure if these verses were written by John, they did not include them in that version of the Bible. But, the King James writers wanted us to know about them so we could understand the lame man’s thoughts. What was supposed to move/stir the waters of the pool of Bethesda?

Think about some of our earlier lessons and write down what it means when Jesus says to stop sinning?

Jesus did not want sin to stand in the way of His relationship with the lame man. He doesn’t want sin to stand in the way of a relationship with you. Can you think of something that could be worse than 38 years sitting on a mat?

What did the sick people try to do when they saw the waters stir?

Did they expect someone to be healed by the water?

Being separated from Jesus for eternity would be so much worse! We can see why Jesus went back to talk to the man at the temple. Jesus wanted to heal the man’s heart and his soul much more than He wanted to heal his legs. Jesus wants to heal your heart too. Have you memorized this week’s verse? Fill in the blanks. Psalm 8
