Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together.
Becoming More Like Jesus
SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: Matthew 27:31-56; Mark 15:20-41; Luke 23:26-49; John 19:17-37 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: Jesus came to be the Savior of the world. He was nailed to the cross by Roman soldiers. Jesus prayed for the soldiers, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” Though He hung naked on the cross, Jesus was covered by the sin of the world. He was forsaken and left alone by God, His Father, as He bore our sins on the cross. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for sin. At the moment Jesus died, God tore the curtain in the temple. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice for sin, we can now come into God’s presence. LESSON FOCUS: To understand that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for my sin. Because His death took my sin away, I can now come into God’s presence. To understand that I can come into God’s presence with confidence that He will hear and answer my prayers. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for sin. Jesus has taken my sin away. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED: Who was crucified with Jesus? (Two robbers.) What did one of them ask Jesus? (He asked Jesus to remember Him when He went into His kingdom.) What did Jesus promise him? (He told Him that day he would be with Jesus in paradise. The man would receive eternal life because He believe Jesus was the Promised One.) As Jesus hung on the cross, what happened at noon? (Darkness covered the land for three hours.) Why did it become dark? (God turned away as Jesus carried the sin of the world.) What happened at the temple the moment Jesus died? (The curtain that closed the Most Holy Place tore from top to bottom.) What was special about the Most Holy Place? (God’s presence was there and only the High Priest was allowed to enter.) Why did God open the door to the Most Holy Place? (Because Jesus was the perfect sacrifice to take away sin and we could now be allowed to enter into God’s presence.)
Jesus Gives Me the Privilege of Coming Into God’s Presence
The Crucifixion of Jesus – The Curtain Is Torn
This Week’s Memory Verse:
Have you asked Jesus to take your sin away and give you eternal life?
You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.
Will you make time each day to come into God’s presence and talk with Him?
1 Corinthians 6:19b, 20

As He breathed His last breath, what huge barrier was removed at the temple? columns altar steps curtain lamp stands The curtain hung at the Most Holy Place, the room in the temple where God met with the high priest. The curtain separated all the people from the Most Holy Place and the high priest could only enter this room one special day each year, and then only after he had made an animal sacrifice for sin. When God tore the curtain, He opened up the Most Holy Place to all who accept Jesus’ forgiveness for their sins. Everyone who believed could now come into God’s presence. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice to take away our sin and allow us to enter into God’s presence.
