Becoming More Like Jesus

Matthew 26:17-35; Mark 14:12-31; Luke 22:7-38; John 13:1-38 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY:

Jesus came to be the Savior of the world. At the Passover meal He ate with His disciples, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. In this way, He taught them about their need for daily forgiveness. The disciples were slow to understand the things Jesus was teaching them. LESSON FOCUS:

To understand that even though I have been cleansed from sin at salvation, I still get dirty with sin each day. To understand that Jesus is willing to wash away my sin each day. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD:

Jesus willingly offers me daily forgiveness. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

What holiday were Jesus and His disciples celebrating? (Passover.) What did jesus get up to do while the Passover meal was being served? (He got up to wash the feet of His disciples.) Why did the disciples’ feet need to be washed? (They were dirty from the dusty road) Who normally did this job? (A servant Why did Jesus wash their feet? (To teach them about His love for them, to teach them about their need for daily forgiveness, and to teach them about being a servant.) Why didn’t Jesus need to wash their hands and head, too? (Jesus told them that a person who had a bath had been cleansed, but just as the disciples feet got dirty walking each day, their hearts would get dirty each day with sin. They would need daily confession to cleanse the sin from their lives.) Will you begin asking Jesus to show you your sin each day? Will you daily confess that sin to Jesus and repent?

Jesus offers me daily forgiveness The Last Supper— Jesus washes his disciples feet This Week’s Memory Verse: Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.” When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 1 Peter 2:21-25 March 9, 2014

Tuesday—The Last Supper

Friday—Forgiveness Did Peter think he was a strong follower of Jesus?  Yes  Pretty much  The strongest  Not very  No

Did Peter ever think he would tell people he didn’t know or love Jesus?  Yes  Wasn’t sure  Was really sure  No Do you think you would be as strong as Peter thought he would be?  Yes  I hope so  I’d try  Not really  No How many times did Peter say he didn’t know Jesus before the morning came and the rooster crowed? (Matthew 26:75) 1 2 3 4 (circle your answer) Peter learned that day how quickly sin could overtake him and how much he needed daily forgiveness from Jesus. Just like Peter, we cannot be followers of Jesus without daily cleansing from sin. Being washed clean from sin each day is the only way to truly follow Jesus. Sometimes we do not even recognize our own sin. Jesus is willing to help us see our sin and turn from it. He is willing to forgive us. Jesus appeared to Peter after His resurrection to help him understand God’s forgiveness. Peter learned about God’s forgiveness given through Jesus Christ and he became a great leader in the church.

How about you? Are you ready to depend on Jesus’ forgiveness every day?

Have you ever had a meal with a good friend or relative that you knew you would not see again because they were going very far away? How did it make you feel? (If you have not had this experience, put down how you think you would feel.)

Read Luke 22:14-20

____________________________________ ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Jesus told his disciples how much He wanted to keep the Passover with them. This would be the last occasion He would share with them before He would be slain as the perfect Passover Lamb. It was a time to quietly talk and share important things. He wanted them to remember the things He was about to say, so during the meal He gave them two symbols. What were they?  Body  Wine  Blood  Bread  Cup  Fruit What do these symbols represent?  Body  Wine  Blood  Bread

 Cup

 Fruit

The sacrifice of the Passover lambs had to be repeated every year. But Jesus, as the perfect Passover Lamb, died once to pay the sin penalty for everyone. This is God’s New Covenant, His new promise for us. Jesus wants us to repeat His last meal, the bread and the wine, so we will always remember His new promise to su to save us from sin when we trust in Him to forgive us. Will you always remember what the bread and cup promise to you?

  

Maybe I don’t think so Never

Read John 13:2-5 And 12-17

Thursday—Washing Away Sin

Wednesday—Loving and Serving Others

The meal had already started when Jesus decided to teach the disciples a lesson. He would teach tem by His actions. Some lessons have the best impact when they are told with more than words. List five action steps that Jesus took: (Verses 4-5)

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

When He was finished washing their feet, what did Jesus ask them?

_______________________________________ _______________________________________ Jesus wants us to wash one another’s feet. He was showing and telling us that He wants us to love and serve each other. Can you think of some people whom you could show love to by serving them?

______________________________________ What are some ways you could serve them?

Read John 13:4-11

Jesus was teaching the disciples about being a servant of all. As He got to Peter, Peter was uncomfortable. He couldn’t understand why Jesus was going to wash his feet. Jesus told him he wouldn’t understand what He was doing until later. Did Peter want Jesus to wash his feet?

 

Yes Maybe

 No Way  Never

What did Jesus say to Peter?

____________________________________ ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Jesus wanted Peter to understand that unless he allowed Jesus to wash his feet, he could not be one of Jesus’ disciples. Peter wanted to follow Jesus. What did he say to Jesus?

   

Wash my legs and back, too Wash my ears and arms, too Wash my hands and head, too Wash all of me

Jesus told him that a person who has had a bath has been cleansed. He was also telling Peter that someone who believes in Jesus and puts his trust in Him has been saved. But, just as the disciples’ feet got dirty walking each day, their hearts would get dirty each day with sin. They would need to come to Him through prayer, confessing daily the sin that needed to be cleansed from their lives. Will you begin asking Jesus to show you your sin every day and daily confess that sin to Jesus?
