Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together.

SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: Mark 16:12-14; Luke 24:13-45; John 20:19-31 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: On the day He was resurrected, Jesus came to two of His followers walking on the road to Emmaus, and He explained the Scriptures concerning Himself. Their hearts burned within them as they walked – they wanted to know more! When they were at the table together that evening, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus when He broke the bread and began to give it to them. Then Jesus disappeared from their sight. The two ran to tell others the things they had learned. Jesus came again to the others that evening and opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. LESSON FOCUS: To understand that the whole Bible is about Jesus and to kindle a desire to understand what the Bible says about Him. To understand that it is Jesus who opens my mind to understand the things written about Him. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: Jesus delights to open my mind so that I can understand Scripture. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED: Where were Cleopas and his friend going? (They were going to Emmaus.) Did these two believe that Jesus had risen? (No.) Who came to walk with them? (Jesus did, but they did not know it was Him.) Why didn’t these two recognize Jesus? (God kept them from recognizing Him.) What did Jesus talk to them about as they walked along? (Jesus explained what the Scriptures said about Himself.)

The Holy Spirit God’s Power in My Life

Jesus Gives Me Understanding of His Word

The Road to Emmaus — Jesus Opened Their Minds

When they were almost home, what did they ask Jesus to do? (They invited Him to stay and have a meal with them.)

What happened next? (Jesus gave thanks for the food and began to give them each some bread. Then, their eyes were opened and they knew it was Jesus.) Why did Jesus come to these two on the road? (So they could know for sure He was alive and He came to teach them from God’s Word all that was written about Himself. He opened their minds so they could understand.)

Will you begin to read God’s Word each day? Before you read, will you ask Jesus to open your mind and give you understanding of what you read? Will you tell your friends the things you learn about Jesus from God’s Word? Copyright 2008 Berean Baptist Church 309 E County Road 42 Burnsville, Minnesota 55306 952.432.7168

This Week’s Memory Verse: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. In My Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you; and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me, that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14: 1-6 April 27, 2014
