Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together. SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: Genesis 18 – 19:30, 2 Peter 2:6-10, 3:8-15 BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: God rewards Abraham by promising him a son; He judges the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah, but He remembers Abraham and rescues Lot.

Abraham A Person of Faith

LESSON FOCUS: To understand that God rewards faithfulness, and He listens to us when we pray To understand that God punishes sin, and He will punish all sin someday WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: God is faithful and righteous. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED: Abraham had three special visitors one day. What was the good news they brought? Sarah would have a son in about a year. What was the bad news the visitors told Abraham? Why would Abraham find this especially sad? The nearby cities of Sodom and Gomorrah would be destroyed because of their wickedness. Abraham’s nephew, Lot, lived with his family in the city of Sodom. What did Abraham do when he found out the cities would be destroyed? He asked if God would save the city if there were 50 righteous people living there. Abraham continued pleading God’s mercy for 45, then 40, then 30, and then 20. Finally, he asked God to save the city if only 10 righteous people lived there. How did God respond to Abraham’s pleading? Each time, God said He would spare the city for the number of righteous people named, even if there were only ten. God then rescued Lot and his family from the destruction of the city. What will happen someday when Jesus comes back again? Jesus will judge sin, and the earth will be destroyed.

God Rewards Abraham and Judges Sin

A Son Promised, Cities Destroyed This Week’s Memory Verse Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

Who will be saved from destruction at the final judgment? Those who trust in Jesus to pay their penalty for sin

He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Are you willing to live a clean, pure life? Are you trusting Jesus to save you from sin?

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

Are you willing to pray for others to know Jesus and be saved from sin?

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles;

See you on Sunday!

FRIDAY – GOD RESCUES US

TUESDAY – VISITORS BRING NEWS

What if Lot had stayed in the city after God warned him about what would happen?

(Today, we’re thinking about the true story in Genesis 18:1-21.)

 He would be OK.  He would have been destroyed with the city. What do you think about Lot leaving the city?    

He could have stayed with his friends. He should have left earlier. He could have decided when he wanted to go. Leaving with the angel was the best thing to do.

God knew that Lot needed rescuing, and He sent angels to rescue him from danger. God knows that we need rescuing from sin, too. He sent Jesus to pay our sin penalty, so we can go to heaven with Him someday and be rescued from God’s judgment against sin. Read 2 Peter 3:9 Write your name in the open spaces in the verse. God is patient with ________________, not wanting __________________ to perish, but _______________ to come to repentance. God wants you to turn away from sin and ask Jesus to pay your sin penalty, so that you can be with Him always. Have you been praying this week for someone to know Jesus? Now, put their name in the open spaces in the verse. God loves them and wants to rescue them from sin, too. God is patient with ________________, not wanting __________________ to perish, but _______________ to come to repentance. If you want to know more about asking Jesus to rescue you from sin, ask your Sunday School teacher or your parents to help you understand.

One day God sent three visitors to Abraham’s tent. Abraham and Sarah prepared a meal for their guests, who had some good news and some bad news. Read Genesis 18:10 to 12. What was the good news that the men told?

 Draw a smile by the good news they had that day. They would make new friends. Sarah would get some new dishes. Abraham and Sarah would soon have a son. Why did Sarah laugh when she heard this news? (Verse 12)   She was happy  She was so old  The men were strange Read Genesis 18:14. What did the messenger say to Sarah? “Is _____________________ too ___________ for the _______________?” The men also brought bad news. The Lord was going to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Read Genesis 18:20. Why would God destroy these cities? Because their “_____________ is so grievous” (so very bad) Read Genesis 13:12 to 13. Who did Abraham know that lived in Sodom? His nephew, ___ ___ ___ Abraham was worried about Lot. But now He could ask God to save him. Did you promise to pray for someone yesterday? Will you pray for them now? Will you believe God when He says “IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD?” Tell God, “Thanks,” that He never gets tired and can always hear you pray.

WEDNESDAY – ABRAHAM PRAYS FOR LOT

THURSDAY – GOD RESCUES LOT

(Today, we’re looking at the true story in Genesis 18:22 to 33.)

(Today, we’re thinking about what God’s Word tells us in Genesis 19:15-30.)

Abraham was sad about the people who would be destroyed with the city. He hoped God would save the city of Sodom if there were some good people living there.

Two of God’s messengers (angels that looked like men) went to Sodom and saw how sinful the town was.

Abraham asked God if He would save the city for 50 good people. He kept asking. What if there were only ...................................... 45? How about ............................................. 40? What if only .......................................... 30? How about only ..................................... 20? What if there were only .......................... 10? How many times did Abraham ask God to spare the city for the good people there? (Remember to count the first time he asked.) 

 1 time

 3 times

 6 times

Do you think that God got tired of Abraham asking Him to save the people? 

 Yes

 No

Why or why not? ______________________________________________________ At last Abraham heard God promise that even if there were only 10 good people in the entire city, God would not destroy it. GOD LOVES PEOPLE! He hates when He must punish sin, yet God is always fair and just. Does God ever get tired of hearing you pray for people to come to Him? “He will not grow ____________ or ______________!” (Isaiah 40:28, part of our memory verse) Do you remember the first two lines of the memory verse from last week? Practice saying last week’s and this week’s memory lines together.

Read Genesis 19:15. What did the angels tell Lot? “_____________________! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.” Read Genesis 19:16 to 17. This was very hard for Lot, and he needed help! The angels grabbed the hands of Lot and his family and led them out of the city. What did the angel tell Lot and his family after leading them out of the city?  Stop and watch what happens.  Flee for your lives! Don’t look back until you get to the mountains! Read Genesis 19:26. Was all of Lot’s family saved?

 Yes

 No

If not, who was not? _________________________________________ Lot’s wife did not obey God. She loved the city more than she trusted God. Read Genesis 19:29. Did God keep his promise to Abraham?

 Yes

 No

Do you believe God will keep His promises to you?  Yes

 No

Do you think that there is anything that is too hard for God?  Yes  No

 Not one thing

Ask God to help you remember that nothing is too hard for Him.
