Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together. SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: Genesis 37:12-36

Joseph The One Who Chose to Obey

BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: Joseph’s brothers hated him, and God allowed them to take him and sell him to slave traders. God then brought along a caravan who took Joseph to Egypt, to the place where God wanted him. God was in control, and Joseph trusted God to bring about the promises He had made for him. LESSON FOCUS:  God was in control of the things that happened in Joseph’s life.  Joseph trusted God and did not become angry or bitter when he had to suffer. WHAT I LEARN ABOUT GOD: God’s name is El Shaddai, The All-Sufficient One. He is not helpless when I suffer. He is in control of everything. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED: Why did Joseph’s brother hate him? (He was their father’s favorite son.) Why did Joseph go to check on his brothers? (His father asked him to see how they were doing.) What did his brothers decide to do when they saw him coming? (They planned to kill him.) What did they do to Joseph? (They threw him into an empty cistern.) Why did they change their minds about killing him? (A caravan came by on its way to Egypt. They sold Joseph to them as a slave in return for money.)

What had Joseph learned earlier in his life about God that helped him through this difficult time? (He knew that God was in control and God had a plan for him.)

How was Joseph similar to Jesus? (Jesus was loved by His Father, hated by His people, sold for silver coins, and through all the difficult times He remained obedient to His Father.)

Will you trust God to be in control even when things are very difficult? Will you refuse to become angry and bitter when life is hard?

See you on Sunday!

God Is Always In Control

Joseph Is Sold by His Brothers This Week’s Memory Verse: “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord. Jeremiah 29:11-14a October 20, 2013
