Dear Parents, We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together. SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: Genesis 16, 21:1-21

Abraham A Person of Faith

BIBLE STORY SUMMARY: Abraham and Sarah try to fulfill God’s promise on their own, and Ishmael is born. Twice God meets Hagar’s needs in the wilderness, confirming that He sees and knows her. The Lord fulfills His promise through Sarah, and Isaac is born. LESSON FOCUS:  To understand that God will fulfill His promise in His time.  To understand that God sees me and knows what I need. WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD: God is called El Roi, the God who sees me. God is faithful to fulfill what He promises. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED: Which one of God’s promises did Abraham and Sarah begin to doubt that God would keep? (God was going to give them a son.) Abraham and Sarah tried to solve the problem themselves. What did Abraham do? (He took another wife, Hagar. Hagar gave Abraham a son, Ishmael.)

God kept His promise and gave Abraham and Sarah a son, Isaac. What problem arose between Sarah and Ishmael? (Ishmael made fun of Isaac.) How did Sarah fix this problem? (She told Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away.)

What happened to Hagar and Ishmael in the desert? (They ran out of water and Hagar thought Ishmael would die.) What did Hagar remember about God? (God is the one who sees me – El Roi.) What did Hagar do? (She remembered that God had helped her before so she prayed and asked Him to help her again.) Did God help Hagar? (Yes, He showed her a nearby well.) What promise did God give to Hagar about Ishmael? (He would become a great nation and he would be prosperous.)

Will you talk to God when you have a need and will you depend on Him to help you? Will you believe that God knows best and trust Him to give you what you need in His time?

See you on Sunday!

God Supplies My Needs

Hagar and Ishmael This Week’s Memory Verse: Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:28-31 September 22, 2013
